2. When I was in Grade Eight, our physics (物理) teacher gave us a challenge to make a paper plane of any shape. The only goal was to get it to fly as far as possible. I had a lot of skills in making paper planes, so I made the best plane I could, and it flew pretty far.
One boy called Eric made the simplest paper plane. He stood there at the starting line with a normal piece of paper. A minute later, he took the flat piece of paper, made it into a ball, and threw it down the hallway. We were so surprised at what he did. We never expected things to happen like that. He beat all of us easily.
Some of the students got angry and Mary even said that he cheated.
The physics teacher said, "How so? He doesn't do anything wrong because a paper ball is indeed (确实) a shape. I like his idea."
Yes, Eric didn't cheat. He just finished the task in a different way. In our life, what we have learned turns into our experience. We do everything according to it. However, our experience gets in the way of our development sometimes. It stops us from coming up with new ideas and is bad for our creativity. So it is really necessary for us to learn to think outside of the "box". Then we may think of more and easier ways so that we can have a better result. Just like Eric in the story, we should think creatively.

3. Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it? Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert (沙漠), so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It's like someone walking six kilometres through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth's magnetic field (磁场), while humans can't. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.
(1)、How can a certain kind of ants find their way?A、By imagining the way. B、By counting their steps. C、By bringing food together. D、By walking through a forest.(2)、What can some fish do with the help of the earth's magnetic field?A、They can swim as far as 110 metres and bring food home. B、They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large area. C、They can swim a long way to a place and then back. D、They can make a smell map of their swimming area.(3)、What are people advised to do according to the last paragraph?A、To help animals. B、To travel at night. C、To keep city lights on. 4. What do you want to be when you grow up? Would you like to be a scientist or an artist? If you have brothers or sisters, the order (顺序) in which you were born may affect (影响) your choice of jobs. The Independent reported. The order in which children are born can affect how they behave (表现) and develop.
A group of British scientists studied 500 people from different job groups. They found that older children are more likely to become astronauts and scientists. NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong and British scientist Stephen Hawking are both the oldest children in their families. That's probably because parents usually treat older children more strictly than younger children. This gives them a more disciplined (守纪律的) personality.
The scientists also found that middle children are 30% more likely to become CEOs than their brothers and sisters. The scientists said that this could be because middle children need to do more to get attention from their parents. This makes them stronger, more flexible (灵活变通的) and better at talks. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook and Bill Gates, former CEO of Microsoft, are both middle children.
Younger children, on the other hand, are more likely to be the"softest". They get attention by learning to pay attention to other people's thoughts. This makes them sensitive (敏感的) to others'feelings. As a result, younger children are more likely to become musicians. German musician Johann Sebastian Bach and Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were both the youngest children in their families.
The study results also suggested that an only child is more likely to become an artist. They get full attention from their parents and are freer to develop themselves. This makes them more creative and confident.
(1)、What may affect people's choice of jobs according to the passage?A、Hobby. B、Birth order. C、Personality. D、Parents'attention.(2)、According to the passage, who is more likely to become an astronaut?A、The oldest child. B、The middle child. C、The youngest child. D、The only child.(3)、As the family's youngest child, what will Robert most likely become according to the passage?A、A scientist. B、A CEO. C、A musician. D、An artist.(4)、What is an artist most likely to be according to the passage?A、Strict with themselves. B、Competitive and flexible. C、Sensitive to others feelings. D、Creative and confident.(5)、What does the writer use most in this passage?A、Numbers. B、Proverbs (谚语). C、Examples. D、Questions.五、第二节 短文填空(10分)
