Deliveryman(快递员) Ryan Arens was making his rounds in his truck near a pond in Bozeman, when he heard a strange sound. "It was like a cry for1 ," he said, "but I couldn't2 what was going on."

Arens got out of his truck, and then he saw the source of that cry - - a dog in the pond,trying to hold onto a thin layer of ice. One old man had entered the pond in a boat and was trying to move closer to the dog, but it was3 going and Arens thought he had a better chance.

"I love animals", Arens said, explaining why he4 his coat and his hat, even though the temperature was very low.

Arens went down, and he just swam out to the dog, took hold of her collar(项圈) and pulled her to the ice. He then put the dog into the boat and moved back to the shore, where worried bystanders(旁观者) rushed the dog to the home of the boat owner. Once in the house Arens jumped into a shower with the dog until they both got9 .

The next day, Arens was back working the same neighborhood when the dog's owner came over to thank him for10 Sadie. "Would you like to meet her?" he asked.

He opened the door to his car, and Sadie jumped out. She ran straight towards Arens,jumping up onto him and bathing him in wet kisses.

On November 7th, 2023, ESA's Euclid space telescope (望远镜) sent back its first full-colour pictures of the universe. 

Last July, people sent Euclid into space.  Its job is to find out how dark matter and dark energy (能量) have made our universe look the way it does today.  95% of our universe appears to be made of these "dark" things.  But we still don't understand what they are.  However, Euclid is able to take a clear picture across a huge part of the sky. 

This time, Euclid sent back 5 pictures.  One of them shows us the spiral galaxy IC 

342.  It is a look-alike of our Milky Way.  Thanks to its infrared view (红外线视图), Euclid has already uncovered very important information about the stars in this galaxy.  Euclid's first full-colour pictures of the universe are not only beautiful, but also very helpful for scientists.  They show that Euclid is working quite well and that scientists can use it to study the matters in the universe.  In the coming months, scientists will study the pictures taken by Euclid, extract (提取) information from them and write many scientific papers. 

What's more, over the next six years, Euclid will take a close look at billions of galaxies 10 billion light years from us.  By doing this, it will create the largest 3D map ever made.  And the pictures by it will take us common people to a much farther universe. 

"Another bad day at school?" my father asked as I came into the room. 

"How could you tell? I didn't shut the door heavily or anything," I replied. Over the past two months I had either done this or thrown my backpack across the room every time I came home from school. Papa thinks it has something to do with moving to a new house. 

"I know this move has been hard on you. Leaving your friends and cousins behind is tough," Papa said, as he put his arm around my shoulder. "What you must remember is that, with a lot of hard work and some time, you will make new friends."

"You don't know how hard it is. This year my baseball team would have won the championship. They won't even give me a chance to pitch (投球) here. All I get to play is right field, and that's the worst!"

Papa turned toward me. "Things will get better, I promise you. Let me ask you, do you know why you were named David Lorenzo?"

"Yes, your name is David and grandfather's name is Lorenzo."

"Very good, and what makes your grandfather so important?"

"He was the first in the family to come to this country and all that," I answered. 

"That is only partly correct. Your grandfather was a very great man. In Mexico, he had been a teacher. When he came to America, he could only get low-paid labor jobs because he didn't speak the language. It took him two years before he spoke English well enough to be allowed to teach here, but he did it. He never complained because he knew change could be difficult. Did he ever tell you that?" my father asked. 

I looked down at my feet, ashamed at my behaviour. "No. That must have been hard," I said sheepishly. 

"Your grandfather taught me that if you let people see your talent, they will accept you for who you are. I want you to always remember what my father taught me, even if it takes a few years for people to see who you are," said Papa. 

All I could say was, "Okay." Then I asked, "What should I do now?"

Laughing, Papa said, "How about you pitch a few to me? You need some work."

 Mathilde Wittock, a designer from Belgium, makes resting chairs using old tennis balls. She creates them with no wood or plastic. Instead, each of her chairs is made up of 500 tennis balls. It is both stylish and strong.

 Wittock wants to help protect the environment because many tennis balls are thrown away and don't break down easily. About 300 million tennis balls are produced each year— and almost all of them end up in landfills(垃圾填埋场). It takes them over 400 years to decompose. Big tennis events use a large number of balls, like the U. S. Open with 70,000 and Wimbledon with 55,000. The lifecycle of a ball is not long, which usually lasts for nine games.

 Wittock receives all her materials from donations, mostly from tennis clubs. It takes Wittock three to four weeks to make a chair. To meet the customers' needs, she cuts and colours the tennis balls by hand to match their rooms. It takes her much hard work and patience to change how the balls look.

 But creation isn't the only goal. In fact, what's more important to Wittock is what happens to the chair when it's old. At the end of her chair's life, she takes it apart and recycles the tennis balls. The fuzz (绒毛) is burned off, and the ball is cut into pieces to make bouncy mats (弹性垫) for kids to play on. In this way, nothing goes to waste.

Moving our bodies causes our brains to give out some special chemicals that create a good feeling. Just ten minutes of working out can leave us feeling happier. Moreover, regular exercise helps us feel fresher and get to sleep more easily. Finally, if we connect our exercise with a healthy diet, we will look healthier and feel more confident about ourselves. Sounds like a good deal, doesn't it?

If exercise hasn't been part of your life for a long time, there is no point training for a marathon（马拉松）: you will soon give up and go back to your old ways! Walking and riding bikes around the local park for ten minutes every day are great ways to develop a fitness habit.

Choose an activity that not only exercises your body, but that you also enjoy. Some people simply go jogging while listening to their favourite music. Others take up activities such as dancing or playing basketball with their friends. Make the experience more enjoyable as you work out.

It doesn't matter how much we exercise. Doing regular exercise isn't just about appearance. Who wouldn't want that?

Is a crow(乌鸦) smarter than a seven-year-old kid?

When we think of intelligent animals, we usually think of dogs, cats, and apes(猿). But do you know that crows are among (smart) animals in the world? Crows have memories and they are able to imagine the future. This  (help) them solve problems like an ape. They even use tools sometimes. A crow can hold a tiny bar(棒) in (it) mouth and use it to get at tasty insects. 

It's normal (think) that a crow in a tree hardly pays any attention you. You might be wrong, though. Crows can remember human (face). Some scientists believe that they can even tell other crows whether human is friendly or not. 

Since twenty years ago, some scientists (study) how intelligent crows are compared to humans. They found that crows were able to solve a difficult problem just as (good) as a 7-year-old human. In another test, a crow solved an eight-stage puzzle within three minutes. 

Therefore,  anyone ever calls you a"bird brain", be sure to thank him or her for the praise.
