Cindy and Anna were best friends. Some days they could spend hours happily together 1 any argument(争吵). But other days they just could not 2 on what to do.

My family is still recovering from the terrible times of the past couple of years. They began when my teenaged stepson became ill. His disease led to kidney failure (肾衰竭) and an ongoing need for treatment. 

As anyone who has cared for a sick child knows, the stress doesn't go away. And there was so much stress. My husband and I were tired, and it was as if we forgot how to communicate—we couldn't have a simple conversation without fighting. Our once-happy home had become tense and unhappy. 

In a rare event of communication, my stepson and I were discussing Valentine's gifts. I recalled that his dad gave me a kazoo (卡祖笛) for our Valentine's Day. 

My reaction to this gift was surprise, which quickly turned to frustration and embarrassment. I, a professional pianist, couldn't get it to make a sound. The kazoo eventually got packed away and forgotten. 

But he was interested and asked to see it. After some trouble, I found it. 

"You couldn't get a sound?" he asked, amazed, turning it around in his hands. "What's so hard about it?"

"I don't know. It just never worked."

My husband took the kazoo—"It's easy! Look, you just do this."—and blew. Nothing happened. Surprised, he tried again. Still there was no sound. 

Frustrated, he tried again, only to produce a sound like an angry bee trapped in the mouth of a bear. My stepson burst into laughter. 

Seeing his face light up was wonderful. Soon, we were all laughing in the point of tears. 

It was as if the dark had lifted and the sunshine was let in. Eyes met and souls reconnected. My stepson took a turn to the kazoo. He did no better than us. More laughing. 

It was the best 10 minutes of the past couple of years. 

The mood stayed light for the rest of the evening. Months later, we still remember it. It didn't solve anything. While my stepson recently had a successful operation (手术), his life will always have challenges. But this experience with the kazoo proved to be a turning point. It showed us that there are still things to laugh at and enjoy, and we can still connect as a family. Thanks to a simple kazoo, we remembered that we are one.

I had the meanest（最刻薄的）mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal（谷类食物）and eggs. When others had Coke and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. But at least I wasn't alone. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.

My mother knew where we were at all times. She knew who our friends were.

We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath every day. The other kids got to wear the same clothes days.

We had to be in bed by 9:00 pm and up at 8:00 am. We couldn't sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept, our mother gave us work to do. We had to wash dishes, make beds and learn to cook. I am sure she lay awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.

Through the years, things didn't improve a bit. We could not lie in bed "sick" like our friends did in order to miss school.

My mother was the meanest mother. Out of four children, a couple of us went on to higher education. None of us have ever done bad things. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest people. I am trying to raise my children like this. I will feel proud when my children call me mean, because, you see, I am so glad I had the meanest mother in the whole world.

Donna Ashlock, a 14-year-old girl from California, was very sick. She had a bad heart. "Donna needs a new heart," her doctor said, "she must have a new heart, or she will die soon."

Felipe Carza, 15, was worried about Donna. Felipe was Donna's friend. He liked Donna very much. He liked her freckles, and he liked her smile. Felipe didn't want Donna to die.

Felipe talked to his mother about Donna. "I am going to die," Felipe told his mother, "and I am going to give my heat to Donna."

Felipe's mother didn't pay much attention to Felipe. "Felipe is just kidding," she thought, "Felipe is not going to die. He's strong and healthy."

But Felipe was not healthy. He had terrible headaches sometimes. "my head hurts," he often told his friends. Felipe never told his parents about his headaches.

One morning Felipe woke up with a sharp pain in his head. He was dizzy (眩晕的), and he couldn't breathe. His parents rushed Felipe to the hospital. Doctors at the hospital had terrible news for them. "Felipe' s brain is dead," the doctors said, "we can't save him."

The parents were very sad. But they remembered Felipe's words. "Felipe wanted to give his heart to Donna," they told the doctors.

The doctors did several tests. Then they told the parents, "we can give Felipe's heart to Donna."

The doctors took out Felipe's heart and rushed the heart to Donna. Other doctors took out Donna's heart and put Felipe's heart in her chest. In a short time the heart began to beat.

The operation was a success. Felipe's heart was beating in Donna's chest, but Donna didn't know it. Her parents and doctors didn't tell her. They waited until she was stronger; then they told her about Felipe. "I feel very sad," Donna said, "but I am thankful to Felipe."

Three months later the operation Donna went back to school. She has to have regular checkups, and she has to take medicine every day. But she is living a normal life.

Felipe's brother John says, "Every time we see Donna, we think of Felipe. She has Felipe's heart in her. That gives us great peace."

Most children don't enjoy doing chores. They like playing computer games rather than cleaning the rooms. But in Australia, Jim and Robert's mother, Mrs. Black, has good and proper ways to get their children to do housework. Here is an example.

"Mom, have you worked out next week's chores? Let Jim and me choose the cards. I can't wait. It's fun!"

When Robert shouted out, his mother had already put all the cards on their big table. On the cards, there are some words like these, "sweep the floor, clean your bedroom, help mom cook, wash vegetables, make beds, feed the fish, cut the wood, clean the bathroom" and many others, Jim and Robert chose two cards for each day from Monday to Friday. Then they would hang them on the weekday task board. Jim likes to clean the bathroom, so he picked up the card "clean the bathroom". Robert loves to make the bed so he picked up his favorite card. Jim again picked up "wash vegetables" and Robert chose "feed the fish". Soon the two boys were happy to take away all the cards.

To help the children do chores, their mother thought hard and came up with this idea. Of course, the parents did the chores at weekends and left Jim and Robert two days free.

What does communication mean?

Communication is how people share information and connect with others. When you're having a conversation with someone, you are also expressing yourself through your tone (语气) of voice and the way you move your body. Communication skills include starting conversations, using eye contact (眼神交流), knowing what to talk about and taking turns to speak and listen.

People can share thoughts and feelings when they speak and listen in a conversation. Listening helps you discover new ideas and understand how others are feeling because you're seeing things through someone else's eyes. Radio presenter (主持人) Emma Barnett says that of all the ways people communicate, talking gets the message across best because this way makes it easier to understand what someone really means. A good conversation makes people understand others better and know their feelings and moods.

A conversation involves taking turns to talk. Some people have a lot to say; others need encouragement to speak, so make sure everyone has an opportunity (机会) to join in. Listen carefully to what the other person is saying and don't be afraid to ask questions or share your opinion.

Body language sends out messages about how people feel, so make sure you look at someone while speaking to them. If you see them nodding and smiling, this means they're showing interest. Annalisa Barbieri, an expert, believes listening is the most important part of a conversation. "It's about paying attention," she says.

A week before Andrea's  birthday, her husband(丈夫), Greg, asked her what she wanted for the birthday. She told him not to get her . On the day of her birthday, Andrea was very unhappy when Greg had nothing for her. Greg was confused(迷惑). He said, "You me not to buy you a gift."

She replied, "I know. But you didn't have to listen to me."

What ? Did Andrea say what she meant directly? Maybe not, but from the conversation, we know Andrea  wanted a gift. So why didn't she say so? And how can Greg understand Andrea's behavior? A good start for him may be to read a book by linguist (语言学家) Deborah Tennen.

Linguists study how languages . Some study the history and grammar of languages. Others, like Tennen, study how people use languages in  everyday life. She analyzes (分析)  of conversations in homes, at work, in coffee shops and at supermarkets. She explores the  between the way men and women speak and the way people from different places speak. Tennen can help us  the messages behind words.

Now some women are spending a weekend at Mother's Camp. There a woman has a room for herself. They can do something to feel  (relax). They can have good rest, watch TV and read magazines. No children or husbands are around  (they) from time to time. Many women have full time jobs. And they are  (work) very hard. And after work they go home. They try their best to lake care  their homes. In many families, women do most of the housework. They say plenty of housework is one of the  (big) problems for them.

Many of their husbands say they want to support their  (wife) by sharing the housework. But they ask so many questions that the women decide it is easier deal with the job themselves.

These women go to Mother's Camp just to relax away from home. They can avoid the  (day) housework and have a happy time. They have a really  (wonder) vacation at Mother's Camp.

After deciding to move into a new house, Liu Zhen, a full-time mother in Beijing, brought in a home organizer. As a result, she threw away 50 percent of her clothes, shoes and books. "The process of tidying up my house brought peace to me and made me feel organized at heart," she said. 

Like Liu, more Chinese people have started to ask for help from home organizers to follow simple lifestyles, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Having a comfortable living environment became more necessary for people who were driven to work at home. 

Yezi, 27, has loved organizing things since she was a child. Although other children would like to throw their schoolbags on the floor and run out to play with their friends, Yezi preferred to put her books and pencil box on the desk and help her mother fold shirts. 

Today Yezi still practices tidying up in her own life. She thinks it has quite a few advantages. It helps people look into themselves by reviewing their lives. It brings beauty to one's living space. It's also a way to improve relationships between people. 

Did Yezi face any difficulties while organizing things? Yes. It is a tradition to treasure things in China. Most people are not in the habit of throwing away useless things. "I'm trying to get people out of it," Yezi added.
