"Where was the cashier (收银员)?" I wondered. Feeling1 with having waited at the counter ( 柜 台 ) for at least 3 minutes, I quickly looked at my watch. I was afraid I2 had enough time to eat a sandwich and then rushed back to work.

The Lantern Festival is a traditional festival in China when people light lanterns, set off fireworks, eat yuanxiao and enjoy family time. But do you know how this festival started?

In the Han Dynasty, there was a man named Dongfang Shuo who worked for the Emperor Wu of Han. One day, Dongfang met a crying maid(哭泣的宫女) named Yuanxiao in the emperor's garden. He asked her what happened. And the maid said she was sad because she couldn't see her family.

Dongfang promised to help Yuanxiao. He left the garden and went to the street. He started telling people that a big fire would happen on the 15th day of the first lunar month. It was the order of the Jade Emperor. Word spread quickly and people in the city were scared.

The Emperor Wu of Han heard of it and asked Dongfang for advice. Dongfang advised him to let Yuanxiao make glutinous rice(糯米) balls for the God of Fire to make him happy. He also advised everyone in the city to put up red lanterns and set off fireworks to create an illusion that the city was on fire. Seeing this, the Jade Emperor would not set fire.

On the special day, the city was full of people and lanterns Yuanxiao's parents were able to meet up with their daughter in the crowd. The city was safe, and the Emperor Wu of Han was happy. He ordered that every year on this day, people should make glutinous rice balls and hang lanterns.

From then on, the 15th day of the first lunar month has been called the Lantern Festival or Yuanxiao Jie. Since Yuanxiao cooked the best glutinous rice balls, people call the food yuanxiao or tangyuan.

If you've ever seen elephant seals(象海豹) lying on a beach, you might think all they do is sleep. But now scientists have discovered that when elephant seals are in the ocean, they hardly sleep at all. They just sleep for about two hours a day.

Even though elephant seals are large animals, they have to be careful in the ocean. Near the surface(水面), predators like sharks and orca s are a danger. So elephant seals spend most of their time diving(潜水) deep underwater, looking for food. Usually, they will dive for about 30 minutes, then come up for air for just a couple of minutes before diving again.

Scientists have wondered how elephant seals can sleep while they're at sea, since they are almost diving all the time. Animals like dolphins and sea lions have a special way. One half of their brain can sleep, while the other stays awake. But elephant seals are like humans- both halves of the brain need to go to sleep at the same time. So how do they sleep?

To find out, a scientist named Jessica Kendall- Bar did a research. She created a special cap that could record the elephant seals' brain activity. The cap also collected information on the elephant seals' heart rates, how their bodies were moving, and how deep they were. Dr. Kendall- Bar and her team put the caps on thirteen young female elephant seals.

The scientists learned that elephant seals steep in short times while they are diving. They only sleep for about 10 minutes at a time. They wake up in time to go up for more air. The scientists found that elephant seals only sleep for about two hours a day when they're in the ocean. That means that the rest they get once they return to land is very important, which helps them have energy again. Back on land they sleep for about 10.8 hours a day

The researchers hope that their work will help to protect the places where elephant seals sleep when they're on land.

If you've ever used pi in math class, you probably used the number 3.14. In fact, the number for pi is much longer. Pi is called an irrational number (无理数) because the digits (数位) after the decimal point (小数点) never end or repeat.

In 2015, a young man from India named Rajveer Meena set a world record by memorizing 70,000 digits of pi. But pi is much longer than that.

On Pi Day ( March 14th) this year, a company called Solidigm said it calculated (计算) pi to105 trillion (万亿) digits. And the 105 trillionth digit is 6. It broke the record for how many digits of pi we know.

Pi is really useful for circles in math. It helps us connect the circumference with the diameter of a circle.

Even NASA scientists use pi for their work of studying space. But they only need about 15 digits of pi for their calculations.

Calculating pi also has another important use. It's how scientists test new computer programs and data storage systems (数据存储系统).

Solidigm's calculation of pi took around 75 days to finish. The company's owner Brian Beeler said that the achievement needed a lot of work. They had to plan the calculation very carefully.

This isn't the first time that Solidigm has calculated pi. In 2022, Google Cloud calculated 100 trillion digits of pi. Solidigm matched that in 2023.

In the future, we'll keep finding more and more digits of pi. We'll never be able to calculate all the digits of pi because it goes on forever. But it still helps us see how great computers can be.

March 20 is a special day. It's the International Day of Happiness! The United Nations (UN) made this day to remind everyone that being happy is important.

Leaders of the country wanted to know how happy its people were. So, they created the Gross National Happiness (GNH) Index ( 国民幸福指数 ) and did its first GNH survey ( 民意调查 ) in2008 to measure the happiness of its people .

Bhutan's interest in happiness caught the world's attention. Then the UN agreed in 2012 to create the International Day of Happiness.

People get joy from many things like friends, family, good health and a clean environment.

Every year on March 20, the World Happiness Report comes out to show what makes people happy and how happy people are in different countries around the world.

Maher Nasser from the UN helped make the International Day of Happiness."I want to make every day an International Day of Happiness," he said.

Nasser thinks that governments can help by making their people happier and healthier. But it's not just up to governments. For- example, helping others can make us feel good about ourselves and that makes us happier.

The International Day of Happiness is more than just a happy day. It's about making a better world together .

On a sunny afternoon, we decided to visit a place where nature' s beauty spread out like a colorful blanket. As we walked through the gates, we couldn't help but notice how the flowers and greenery attracted everyone's （注意). The grass was green and the flowers (闻) sweet.

The （花园）were filled with people. Different activities （牵涉） picnicking and playing games under the shade of the trees. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, smiling and laughing politely at each other 's jokes .

It was more than just a relaxing afternoon ; it was an experience that left us with （回忆) that would last a lifetime. And we couldn't help but feel a deeper connection to the (传统) of our town .We can also raise money for the homeless.

Wu Zeyin, 12, comes from Hubei, China. He (move) to Botswana with his family eight years ago. "I can see only a few kinds of fruit and vegetables at supermarkets here. They don't look good, but their prices are high," Wu said

Because of the desert climate (气候) in Botswana, it is (true) difficult for farmers there to grow fruit and vegetables. Botswana has to buy lots of fruit and vegetables from other(country), such as South Africa. Botswana has been working with China (solve) this problem. In July 2022, Botswana started program to grow China's water - saving rice. Knowing it, Wu wanted to help with local agriculture (当地的农业) in his way. "I dreamed creating an app to help local farmers," Wu said.

Wu has a good brain and he has made his dream come true by (develop) a new app called Farm Assistant. The app can teach farmers how to grow vegetables such as potatoes, onions, carrots and cabbages. Farmers who use the app can click ( 点 击 ) on a picture of a vegetable to see (it) seed (种子) price, watering needs, selling price, etc. After the farmers plant the seeds, the app can remind them they need to do at different times. Wu hopes his app can make the farmers' work a lot (easy) than before.
