Estee Lauder (July 1, 1906—April 24, 2004) was an American businesswoman. Along with her husband, Joseph Lauder, she set up Estee Lauder Companies, the world-famous company.

Lauder was the only woman on TIME magazine's 1998 list of the 20 greatest business people of the 20th century. She was even listed in the U. S. Business Hall of Fame in 1988. 

Her childhood dream was to become an actress. She met Joseph Lauter when she was in her early 20s. On January 15, 1930, they married. The last name was later changed from Lauter to Lauder. The Estec Lauder Company was created in 1935. Then one day, when Estee Lauder was doing her hair, she was asked about her perfect skin (皮肤). Soon, Lauder came back and handed out four of her uncle's creams and showed how to use them to others. Over the next fifteen years, they made their business bigger and continued to sell their products (产品) in the United States. 

As of 2010, Estee Lauder sells its products in large shopping malls across the world. It has a total of 27 kinds of products, among which Estee Lauder and Clinique are the best known. 

She once said, "Beauty is about the way you think. There's no secret. Why are all brides (新娘) beautiful? Because on the day they get married, they care about how they look. There are no ugly women—only women who don't care or who don't believe they're amazing." 

Aged 97, Lauder died at her home in Manhattan.

People and dogs have been living together for hundreds of years. When did dogs and people become friends? Where did dogs come from?

A group of scientists tried to answer these questions. They just finished a study about the history of dogs. In the study, they looked at the DNA of dogs all over the world and found that dogs, like human, shared DNA with their family members. The scientists put together a big family tree for dogs. It went all the way back to the animal's beginning.

In this way, scientists learned about the history of dogs. The first dogs lived in Asia. They were born about 33,000 years ago. At first, there were only about 6, 400 of them. Their parents were wolves.

The new study answers many questions. It raises some, too. For example, what caused wolves in Asia to become dogs all those years ago?

One idea is that their DNA slowly changed and the wolves became dogs in the end. As time goes by, dogs became "man's best friends". Or it could happen the other way around. It was possible that some wolves started living with people before they became dogs. Living with people led to many changes to these wolves. It changed their DNA, So their offspring（后代）became dogs. In other words, it was possible that wolves were our friends before they became dogs.

By studying DNA, scientists now have a much better understanding of the history of dogs. ____ How exactly dogs came to be our friends is still unclear.

Have you ever heard of the Silk Road? Do you know what an important role it plays in the whole world? Did you visit any famous places along the road? Although it's called the Silk Road, people bought and sold much more than silk. The Silk Road went through Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. It was 6,500 km from Xi'an to Rome.

My dad is very interested in the Silk Road and he has told me many things about it. Last summer, my family got away for a holiday and went to some places on the road.

We started at Lanzhou and went on to Wuwei. Wuwei was a very important city on the Silk Road. It connected (连接) three main cities in the area. In ancient times, it was also a capital. Although it's now a modern city, you can get a feeling of history when you visit it. We saw lots of very old stone monuments and people there were very proud of their city's long history.

The next stop was Jiayuguan. It's on the edge (边缘) of the desert, and was also an important place on the Silk Road. It was a busy city with a lot of people coming and going. Even today, it's a city that many business people travel through. An important part of the Great Wall was also built here.

After that, we went on to Yumenguan. I first found out about Yumenguan in the famous poem written by Wang Zhihuan. It was in the Gobi Desert and was the only connection between Central Asia and China. I wonder how people ever made it through the hot desert so long ago.

This trip wasn't just a scenic (观光的) journey. It helped me understand the history of the area and see how people from different places influenced (影响) each other in many ways.

The boat arrived at a small town, and Legree and his slaves (奴隶) got off. Tom and the other men walked all the way to the plantation. 

They stopped in front of a house. It was large, but it looked empty and uncomfortable, the glass of some windows were broken and there were bits of wood and boxes on the ground. Two slaves, Sambo and Quimbo, were Legree's two main helpers on the plantation, and they arrived with dogs. 

"Don't try to run away,'' said Legree to Tom and the others, "or the dogs will follow you."

"Sambo,'' said Legree, "take these new slaves down to the cabins."

The slaves followed Sambo to the cabins. They were in a row, near the plantation and far from the house. Tom's heart sank when he saw them. Each one had only one room, without any furniture. 

They had to wait in line for their turn to cook a very poor meal. Then they all went to sleep on the floor in the cabins. 

Every day, from early in the morning until late in the evening, under the hot sun the slaves picked cotton. When they finished, Legree weighed it, and there was whipping (鞭打) for the slaves who didn't pick enough cotton. Tom learnt to pick cotton quickly. 

One day, Tom noticed an older slave Martha was in pain and slow. Her sack was almost empty. Tom went near Martha, and silently put a lot of his cotton into her sack. 

"No, don't!" said the woman, looking surprised. "They will punish you."

Just then Sambo arrived, kicked Martha and whipped Tom across his face. Martha fell down. "Work faster, you animal!" But when he left, Tom quickly gave her some more of his cotton. Suddenly, the beautiful new woman put a large quantity of cotton in Tom's sack. 

Legree wanted to teach Tom a lesson when he heard Tom kept putting cotton into Martha's sack. . .

With nothing but her small boat for company (作伴), a British lawyer (律师), Victoria Evans, fought a high winds and big waves at sea. She s rowed across the Atlantic Ocean (大西洋) alone. Her adventure (冒险) has set a new world record!

Victoria had never rowed before she took on this challenge (挑战). Three years ago, she had the idea to encourage (鼓励) more females to become a in sports. After that, she started to practise rowing more than ten hours a day. She then continued to p for sailing on the ocean. 

The 35-year-old started her race from a Spanish island on February 11. D the trip, high winds made rowing very difficult. At one point, a wave locked the cabin (door from the inside). It took Victoria three hours to open the lock with a knife. Still, she got over all these difficulties. This b woman completed more than 4,700 kilometers of rowing in 40 days and 19 hours.
