Do you know what the horse-faced skirt is? Is there anyone around you wearing it? The horse-faced skirt, or mamianqun, may be the most popular traditional clothing in China this year. It is a type of hanfu, the traditional style of clothing of the Han people. It first appeared in the Song Dynasty and gained popularity during the Ming Dynasty.

Is there a horse's face painted on the skirt? Well, the skirt is made up of three pieces. The middle one is shaped like a trapezoid （梯形）. It looks like a horse's face. Some people believe that's how the skirt got its name. But others think the middle piece looks more like a city wall. The wall is called the horse-faced wall. They think the skirt got its name from that.

The horse-faced skirt is now getting so popular that some people wear it daily. We sometimes see young people in it taking photos in the park. While showing their own beauty, they show the clothes as well. On March 6, a Douyin report showed that the order for horse-faced skirts went up by 841 percent compared to the past year. As hanfu becomes popular, traditional and modern fashions are coming together. This has influenced（影响） not only clothing styles but also people's cultural ideas.

Are you an "I" or an "E"?

On Jan 1、Xu Zhuoyuan, a 17-year-old girl from Hunan, climbed Kilimanjaro（乞力马扎罗山）, the tallest mountain in Africa. In May 2023she even stood on the top of Mount Qomolangma.

Training for the peaks

Four years ago, Xu went on a family trip to Sichuan. She climbed Mount Siguniang and showed a great interest in it. When she reached the top of the mountain, she got a strong feeling of satisfaction. From then on she spent most of her time on this sport. "I practiced a lot by climbing mountain s in Yunnan and Sichuan every month. I also do exercise like running, swimming and rope skipping（跳绳） every day, "said Xu. She worked hard and trained her body to be strong for the big climb.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

On Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, it's like a desert of over 4,000 meters with big temperature changes. Xu climbed for seven days and faced rain and strong winds. Xu had to be careful about the temperature and wear the right clothes. She learned a lot during the climb. For example, she climbed with Xia Boyu. He was the first Chinese climber to reach the top of Mount Everest with a prosthetic （假肢的） leg. "Even though Xia is almost 74 years old, he kept going. Xia encouraged（鼓励） me." said Xu.

Xu wants to climb the seven tallest mountains and go to the North and South Poles （极点）before she turns 18. She also wants to learn how to help climbers with knee problems like her dad.

Many schools in China have introduced herb-planting（草药种植classes. They feel like  Traditional Chinese Medicine（TCM传统中医） through it. And now it wins the hearts of many young people for its good effect（效果）.

Jin Ying, 20, is a lover of TCM. She took part in a three-month training course on accupuncture and tuina（针灸推拿） Since the training, her life habits has changed,  after learning the Five Elements theory（五行学说）. For example, she  not to exercise too much during winter, because people should slow down in the cold winter according to TCM. For her, learning these skills and theories（理论）was not about becoming a TCM doctor but about  a new lifestyle.

Doctor Ma is a TCM expert in a hospital. He says that between Western medicine and TCM, young people often choose TCM  it can work well on sick people. Some people question why TCM treats the same illness differently. Doctor Ma explains: "This is because it can be a  treatment for different sick people." TCM helps young people understand Chinese medicine and learn why people consider it as a  of our Chinese culture. So far, some universities  a chance for foreign students to plant different kinds of herbs. By taking care of the plants, foreign students can get the  experience of making herbal medicine and return to their own countries with TCM.

Introducing herb-planting classes at schools can bring students  to Chinese herbs and TCM. And it also helps pass on these traditional treating ways to younger people.

Plants "talk"

Scientists have known for years that plants react（反应） to sounds around them. But now some scientists have shown that plants also seem to be doing some "talking".

Professor Hadany and her team set up microphones to record tomato plants under different situations. The result showed that the plants made ultrasonic sounds（超声波）. 

As the scientists studied the sounds, they notice the regularity（规律性）. Plants hardly clicked（发出咔哒声） when they had enough water. 

When scientists cut off a stem from the plants, the plants also clicked more. The result suggests that researchers may one day be able to use a plant's sounds to find out when it is having trouble, and what trouble it is having. That could be very helpful to farmers.

The other research has shown that plants also make sounds to communicate in some ways. When small animals on the plant attack（攻击） a plant, it will give a warning to its neighbors.  It's a useful way for plants to protect themselves.

Then here is a question: Is anything listening to the plants? Dr. Hadany point s out that mice who live on plants can hear the sounds. The clicks may tell them whether a plant has problems. 

As Dr. Hadany says, "Even in a quiet field, there are actually sounds that we don't hear, and those sounds carry information. The team's research has already changed our ideas about plants."

tress Before a Test

Many people experience stress before an exam. Actually, a little nervousness can help you perform your best. However, when this stress becomes so excessive（过度的 ） that it really influences（ performance on an exam, it is known as test stress.

There are a few causes of test stress.

● Fear of failure. If you care too much about your scores, the pressure car cause test stress.

● Poor testing history. If you have done poorly on tests before, either because you don't study well enough or because you are so stressed, you can't remember the answers easily.

●Unpreparedness. If you don't work hard enough, this can add to your feeling of stress.

Does exam stress influence your grades? If so, I'll share with you a scientific tip to help overcome it. —Clear your room and your desk.

Have you heard the saying "A cluttered（杂乱的） desk is a sign of a cluttered mind?" It's scientifically correct.

More clutter around your work space makes it more difficult to be able to focus on preparing for the exam. This is because physical clutter weakens your ability to think. So you need to clear your desk and your room. Do the following to get organized.

● Reduce as much clutter as you can around your work space. Throw away anything that doesn't need to be there, e. g. photos, snacks.

● Use drawers. Store things away in your drawers. The only things you should have on your desk are the tools and books you need.

● Clean your space. Since you've cleared your space, give your desk and room a good clean.

I believe that if you follow my tips, you'll become a calmer and more successful student.
