The Laba Festival is a traditional Chinese festival. It is celebrated on the eighth day of the 12th lunar month. In Chinese, the 12th lunar month is  "La" and eight is pronounced "ba". So the festival was named "Laba". It falls on January 13 this year.

Chinese people will have Laba porridge on the day of the festival. This tradition dates back to the Song dynasty （宋代）， Ancient Chinese people attached great importance （重视） to , When they had a good harvest （收成）, farmers will offer sacrifices （祭品） to heaven and earth.

Cooking Laba porridge was one way to  the harvest. The porridge was offered as a sacrifice. Family members would also have Laba porridge together and leave . It symbolized （象征） a good harvest next year. 

There are now lots of ways to  Laba porridge. It is made of different kinds of rice, beans, dried nuts, etc. The porridge is a very nutritious （营养丰富的） food in winter. It is enjoyed by many Chinese people.

Planting 1,000,000 Trees

MY NAME is Will Charouhis. My hometown is Miami, in the U.S. state of Florida. The city is known for its warm weather and many beautiful beaches. It's very popular with tourists. However, scientists say it's in trouble. Because of climate change （气候变化）, the sea level is rising. As a coastal city, Miami will suffer badly. By 2070, the city will probably be under two feet of water.

Life will be hard then. I know this because I once experienced （经历） the effects of climate change. lt was September2017. Hurricane Irma （飓风"厄玛") hit Florida. It caused serious flooding （水灾） in Miami. My city was almost completely under water. For days, I thought about what I could do. How could I help to prevent this from happening again?

I became interested in mangroves. These trees grow in or near water. They are good at taking in greenhouse gases （温室气体） from the air. They can also protect coastal cities against rising seas. I started the "A Million Mangroves" project. I ask people to help protect mangroves.

Five years ago, the COVID-19 pandemic （疾病大流行） shut down the world. I couldn't go to school. Neither could I spend time with my friends indoors. But I was able to spend months working along Florida's coastlines. I planted more than six miles of new mangroves. I'll continue to work hands-on and teach people about the importance of protecting trees. It's useless to just be afraid of climate change. Turn your fear into action. We can all do something to save our planet.

April 27 is a special day in Britain. It's called 'Take Our Daughters & Sons to Work Day'. It was brought to Britain in 1994 from America. On that day thousands of children take a day off

 1 and go with one of their parents to their work places. By doing this, it can teach young boys and girls more about the 2 where they live. This day is more than just taking the child to work. It's about learning real world experiences. Some things can't be taught in the classroom.

 Now the children can have a close look at what their parents are doing. This may help them when they have to 3 a job.

Michael Jackson was born in Indiana, America, on August 29, 1958. He was the seventh of the nine children in his family. His father Joe Jackson had bis own band （乐队）. They would practice after work in the living room of their house. Joe soon noticed the talent （才能） of his sons and set up the family band "The Jacksons". They later became "The Jackson 5". Little Michael always watched his brothers practice singing. When he was about 5 years old, he joined the group and became the lead singer （领唱） of "The Jackson 5". 

Michael gave his first show in a school program in 1963. Wearing black pants and a white shirt, he sang Climb EV'ry Mountain. Michael said, "When I finished that song. Everybody applauded （鼓掌） and people were smiling, and some of them were standing. My teachers were crying and I just couldn't believe that I had made them all happy and excited. It was such a great feeling. I felt a little surprised too because I didn't think I had done anything special. I was just singing the way I sang at home every night. When you're performing, you don't realize what you sound like or you're coming across. You just open your mouth and sing,"

Soon his father made the band take part in talent contests. He was very strict with young Michael and bis brothers. Under their father's control, at the age of 6, Michael and "The Jackson 5" started being popular with their acts at talent shows.
