China has announced its first group of five national parks to protect some endangered animals.

In Cixi, Zhejiang Province, every family was enjoying the May Day holiday. A middle-aged man put down his chopsticks and went out with a tool bag, leaving his wife at home. He is Qian Haijun who won the title of "Model of the Times (时代楷模)" on May 6th 2022.

Qian Haijun is a worker who deals with electric problems. In the past 23 years, he has spent all his spare time in helping a number of families with electricity. Qian Haijun has made 500 cards with his name and telephone number and handed them out so that people would know who to call when a problem comes. He answers every call at any time and values them very much. He also pays much attention to the group of elderly people over 60 who live on their own. He realizes that the elderly need companionship (陪伴) more than anything else. Over the past few years, he has become the "good son" of more than 100 elderly people.

His stories were made into a mini movie, and even the Ningbo and Cixi Volunteer Service Centers are named after him. Under his leadership, more than 1,200 volunteers have joined the project for the disabled. And they have provided help more than 30,000 times.

"I am a common people. I will never think about stopping offering help to people in need, and I will try my best to bring beauty to the world," he said.

Technology is helping people to give first aid. It helps save lives faster. Technology not only makes our lives easier, it can also save lives. People who have sudden health emergencies (紧急情况) like heart disease or accidents may only have a few minutes to live unless they get help. We can use technology to offer help faster. Let's look at some technological inventions that are helping save lives.

Smart app

Some people in the US made an app called Pulse Point. It invites common people trained in CPR (心肺复苏术) to use it. The app knows the users' locations. If someone needs first aid nearby, a user will get a message asking them to help.

Magic gel (凝胶)

The gel can stop someone bleeding (流血) in just 10 seconds. It is made from plants. It can stick to a wound and help seal (密封) it. It was invented more than 10 years ago but was only allowed to be used on animals. Now in the US, it has been allowed to be used on humans, too. And the person from the US was only 17 years old when he invented it!

Flying aid

If people get injured or need help in hard-to-reach areas, drones (无人机) can be of great use. Because they can fly, drones can often offer help faster than people. And they can also make helping people safer for rescuers (营救者) working in dangerous conditions. The drones can have a camera that can watch your health. They can also carry useful things, like blankets or a life jacket to save someone from drowning (溺水).

Chinese opera is one of the oldest art forms in the world.  Different parts of China have their own local opera and there are more than 300 different kinds.  Actors in Sichuan opera wear specially painted masks (面具) on their faces in many different colors. They will suddenly change completely, and all the time, the actor is dancing beautifully with many difficult movements. Some actors can change face ten times in twenty seconds, and yet you never see their fingers touch their face.

Of course, you realize that the actor has many different masks, one on top of the other. They are made from very thin silk in bright colors. If the actor turns his back to you, you think he is changing his mask while you cannot see him doing it.  Then he shakes his head suddenly and that mask has changed, like magic, into another one! You cannot believe your eyes, and yet it has happened!

To be able to change the masks without being seen is a very special skill. .The exact method used by the actors is a closely guarded secret that is only passed on from father to son or master to apprentice (学徒). As China's influence develops around the world, Chinese culture travels too. 

This spring, the most eye-catching movie might be YOLO (《热辣滚烫》). By Feb 26, it had made over 3.3 billion yuan at the box office, reported The Paper.

Directed by 41-year-old Jia Ling, the movie  the story of a woman tired of the world, finding herself and learning to love life through boxing (拳击). The name YOLO is  for the movie's main idea - you only live once.

Jia has tried many different  in her life, including crosstalk and sketch (小品) performer, variety show guest and actress. It was in 2019 that she  a director for the first time, making her movie Hi, Mom (《你好，李焕英》).

Jia didn't study directing at university. And she  this is both a good and bad thing. It makes her feel freer in filmmaking because she doesn't need to follow a fixed style. To everyone's , Hi, Mom made her the world's highest-grossing (票房最高的) woman director before 2023.

Before making YOLO, Jia was often  as an overweight comedian. She often made  about herself to make people laugh. For this movie, Jia lost 50 kg and looked very different. Some people online said even her voice became softer, and they call this a "rebirth" for Jia.

In Jia's eyes, her change in identity (身份) and look is her way of staying true to herself, "It's  to predict one's life. I'm just following my heart but not looking for changes on purpose. Movies are now the best way to show myself, so I put all my  into them," Jia told Xinhua.

"Jia didn't change at all. She's just being more herself," said talk show host Chen Luyu in her program A DateWith Luyu.

Do you ever find yourself standing in front of rubbish bins, not sure whether the piece of waste in your hand is recyclable or not? To solve this problem, four Hong Kong high school students have invented a smart rubbish bin that uses AI to divide the waste. The students called the bin Waste Collection Point.

The bin uses a camera to know the kind of the waste and divides it into plastic, paper, glass or other kinds. To make sure the bin can divide waste correctly, the team tested every product in the school shop and took over 500 pictures of each one. "To train the AI, we had to take many photos from different angles (角度), so it has a better rate of accuracy (精确度)," said one of the students.

The students had the idea of the smart bin two years ago because they saw a lot of rubbish here and there in their village. Every weekend, they had to join the villagers in picking up the waste.

The students decided to invent a special recycling bin that would encourage people to protect the environment. Although the school ended at 2 p.m., the team members would continue to work on their invention until 6 or 7 p.m. at school.

"Our bin is now in its third generation (代). Before graduation, we hope that it can be widely used in the city." The students said, "Then it will be easier than ever for people to recycle waste and protect our environment."
