It was 1504,and Columbus was making another trip to the New World.Columbus and his men needed fresh water and food after three months at sea.They saw an island and went to the shore.On the island there were unfriendly Indians who refused to give food and water to them.Columbus' men were afraid of the Indians,but he had a clever plan.He used gesture(手势) language to tell the Indians about his mysterious (神秘的) power to turn off the light in the sky.He knew about a lunar eclipse (月食) the next night because the information was in his almanac (天文历书).Columbus told the Indians,"Tomorrow night I'll turn off the light in the sky." But they didn't believe him.When the eclipse began the next night,the Indians became very frightened.They begged Columbus to turn on the light again,and they quickly gave him all the food and water he wanted.Immediately Columbus and his men hurried back to the ship and sailed away in the moonless night.

Italy is shaped like a boot.The Colosseum (罗马斗兽场)in Rome was built during the time of the Roman Empire,in the first century AD. It is a popular tourist attraction today.

Italy is well-known for its designers,who create cars,handbags,clothes,shoes and other items that are in demand for their style and fine workmanship.

Italy is a member of the European Union,a group of countries that join together for better trade.The currency or money they use is called the "euro".

Food and eating good meals are important to Italians. McDonald's is also popular there.Many families still eat their main meal in the middle of the day. Families spend a lot of time together.

People believe that climbing can do good  health.Where can you learn the skill of climbing then?If you think that you have to go to the mountains(learn) how to climb,you're wrong.Many Americans are learning to climb in city gyms.The climbing wall goes straight up and has small holding places for hands and feet.

How do people climb the wall?To climb,you need special shoes a harness(系带) around your chest to hold you.There are ropes  (tie) to your harness.The ropes hold you in place so that you don't fall.A beginner's wall is usually about 15 feet high,and you climb straight up.There are small(piece) of metal that stick out for you to stand on and hold on to.Sometimes it's easy to see the new piece of metal.Sometimes,it's not.The most difficult is your fear.It's normal for humans to be afraid of(fall),so it's difficult not to feel fear.But when you move away from the wall,the ropes hold you,and you begin to feel safe.You move(slow) until you reach the top.

Climbing see your whole body,especially your arms and legs.This sport gives your body  complete workout.When you climb,both your mind and your body can become(strong).
