As a teenager, school was difficult for me. I had a kind of attention disorder, which means I couldn't direct my attention to what I was doing. So when everyone else in the class was centering their attention on tasks, I could not. 

In my first reading class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all finished in 45 minutes. I immediately put up my hand and said, "Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to finish the task. "

She looked down at me through her glasses, saying, "You are not different from your classmates, young man. "With her encouragement, I tried. But I didn't finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.

In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He Lived in a time when the blind couldn't get much education. But Louis didn't give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots(点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind. 

Wasn't I the "blind" in my class, being made to learn like the "sighted " students? With thoughts running through my head, I found myself deeply attracted in reading and writing. I completed the task in less than 40 minutes. I realized that I was not different from others. I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problem, why should I ever give up?

I didn't expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs. Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day with an "A" on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words, "See what you can do when you keep trying?"

Growing up, we've heard a lot of stereotypes(刻板印象)of how sex( 性 别 )influences interests and jobs. For example. most boys do math better than girls, while most girls are better at learning languages. We usually think this is because of differences in how boys' and girls' brains work. But is it true?

According to past studies, some parts of our brains can be different in size. Scientists used to think these differences might influence how well men and women think and do things. They found this by scanning(扫描)people's brains. However, researchers only scanned dozens of (几十个) people. As said in a 2022 study, for such research to be believable, you would need to scan the brains of a few thousand people at least. 

In 2023, the UK Biobank scanned the brains of 40, 000 people in the UK. It showed differences between men and women in the size of certain brain parts. About one-third of these parts were found to be larger in men, while another third were larger in women. However, these differences were very small. The differences are not big enough to form a conclusion(结论)from them. 

Also, our brains might change in structure (结构)and size according to our life experiences. For example, even if a part of a man's brain, responsible for doing math, is larger than that of a woman, it is possibly because he takes jobs that use math skills. So, any brain differences between men and women could be a result, not a cause, of different roles in life and society. 

In Chinese culture, there are 24 solar terms (节气)in a year. Awakening(醒来)of Insects falls on March 5 and ends on March 20 this year. The name itself suggests that animals sleeping in winter are awakened by spring thunder( 雷 )and that the earth begins to come back to life. 

Spring ploughing (春耕)

During this period, most parts of China experience warmer weather. It provides a natural environment for farming.  Just as an old Chinese saying goes, "Once the Awakening of Insects comes, spring ploughing never rests. "

Offering sacrifices ( 祭 祀 )to the white tiger

According to an old Chinese folk story, a white tiger always begins hunting (打猎) during the Awakening of Insects. Sometimes it hurt people and brings bad luck. Therefore, people draw the white tiger on paper, and put pig's blood and pork on its mouth.  It's seen as a way to avoid bad luck

Eating pears

 As the weather gets warmer and the air becomes dry, people will feel thirsty and dry more often than usual, which can cause colds or coughs. A pear is sweet and juicy, so pears are good choices for health during the Awakening of Insects. 
  We should learn from our ancestors and spread it to the whole world. 

Karlsson, a foreign teacher at Beijing Union University (BUU), has lived in China for over 15 years. He showed great interest in China when he joined in a program for East Asian studies in Switzerland in 

1997. Back then, cellphones and the Internet were not widely used. Learning Chinese meant using textbooks, dictionaries and tapes. He learned Chinese in that way. 

In 2006, with a high score in the Chinese language test, he won a scholarship for a five-week summer program in Beijing. 

After finishing the study program, Karlsson was offered a Beijing-based job as a market researcher. 

In the next year, he started to teach business at BUU. 

Life in Beijing has been a wonderful experience. It has offered him many chances for personal growth. Today, thanks to high-speed broadband(宽带)and 5G, he can connect with students at BUU's partner universities in Russia or Mexico while riding on the Beijing subway. 

Although he was busy on teaching days, Karlsson applied(申请)for a full-time scholarship(奖学金) at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. At the age of 44, he got his Ph. D. in economics (经济学博士). "I am quite interested in blockchain (区块链)technology, and I know that China is quickly becoming the leader in blockchain applications. So, I always write my articles in this area, "he said.

The elephant-foot drum is a classic musical instrument of the Dai people. The drum-making skill  (list) as a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产)in 2011.

The elephant-foot drum dance is very popular with the Dai people. It is often performed during festivals. And it is way for the Dai people to show their joy as well as their village culture. 

Xiè Wenping, 32, used to learn how to make a drum from his grandfather  made elephant-foot drums for a living. "At a young age, I decided to make more and  (good) drums, "Xie said. 

While elephant-foot drums carry great cultural  (important), making an elephant-foot drum is no easy task. "It takes about thirty  (step), "Xie explained. 

The repetition(重复)of the work might not be  (excite), but whenever Xie sees his grandfather's smile while making the drum, he feels encouraged again. "Over the years the number of people skilled in making elephant-foot drums  (go) down, "Xie said. "I feel like it's my responsibility to carry it on. "

Xie is creatiye in the form of the drum. To make  easier for the elephant-foot drum to spread to places outside Yunnan, Xie came up  the idea of making a mini version(版本)of the drum and designed(设计)key chains shaped like the elephant-foot drum.
