It is the coldest time of the year but fishermen are starting ice fishing in the Chagan Lake in Jilin. The Chagan Lake is one of China's biggest lakes, and when you look at it from above, it looks like a whale. 

Winter here is long and cold. For about 1,000 years, the fishermen have had to break the ice to make a living. For them, it's not only a way of life but also a job. 

There are 68 kinds of fish in the Chagan Lake. The fishermen can get hundreds of tons of fish in one catch. The biggest fish in the first catch of the year is the "star" fish, and with its good meaning, it can be quite expensive. 

In Chinese culture, the word for "fish" sounds like the word for "good harvest (丰收)". During the Spring Festival, people like to say "Nian Nian You Yu". It means having a good harvest every year. On the night before the Spring Festival, a dish with fish is always on Chinese tables, meaning good luck for the coming year.

The Christmas party is over. The gifts are opened. Now, it's time for the Christmas tree to retire. Every year, people around the world buy lots of trees for Christmas. In 2022, people in America bought 20-30 million trees! But where do the trees go after the holiday?

Many countries recycle (回收) the Christmas trees. For example, in Berlin, people take off toys from the trees and leave the trees on the streets. The trees will be sent to the power stations (发电站). Every year, Berlin recycles about 350,000 trees. They can make electricity (电) for 500 families to use for a year. 

In New York, people always send their trees to parks. There, the trees are cut into small pieces. The wood pieces are used in gardens to keep the plants warm. 

In some countries, many Christmas trees are sent to zoos. Once a year, elephants in Austria get their favorite food. The trees taste sweet. 

The lives of Christmas trees are short, but they bring people so much happiness.

The jackfruit (菠萝蜜) is a delicious fruit in Asia. When thinking about the fruit's English name, you may ask, "Who is Jack? Why does he have his fruit?"

Jackfruit isn't a person's name at all. The fruit's name first comes from the Indian word "Chakka Pazham". Later, Portuguese (葡萄牙) travelers came to India and called it "Jaca". This brings us to its English name of jackfruit, said NPR. 

There is another food, however, named after a person—the sandwich. In the 1900s, playing card games late into the night became popular in Britain. John Montagu, the 4^th Earl of Sandwich, started to eat pieces of cold beef between two pieces of bread. This was a late-night meal without leaving the gaming table. 

There are more names named after people. Long Johns are warm trousers that keep us warm in winter. It's said that they were named after the US boxer John L. Sullivan who liked wearing a similar kind of clothing in the games.
