One evening last autumn, while Marcos, 15, did his homework and his father, Frank, 47, prepared lesson plans, they heard screaming outside. It was from one of their neighbors, the Smith family. Then Marcos' eye was caught by a glow (火光) from there. 

"The house's on fire!" Marcos cried. Wearing only in shorts, the barefoot (光脚的) teen ran out with his dad. When they got there, Grandmother Mary, mother Susan, and son Nathan were crying for help. Through the open front door, father Alex was staggering (磕磕绊绊) down the stairs, coughing heavily. 

"Anyone else in it?" Frank asked. 

"My son!" Alex pointed to the second floor. 

Frank started up the stairs, but smoke and heat forced him to his knees. He crawled (爬) upstairs and down the hall where Alex said he would find Cody, 8, who had locked himself in a bedroom. Frank tried hard to open the door. But Cody made no reply, and Frank had to make his way back downstairs. At the same time, Marcos saw Mary and Susan pulling a ladder, shouting: "Cody is at the window!"

Marcos then placed the ladder near the window and climbed up. When Marcos reached the window, he pushed the screen into the room and managed to coax (哄) Cody out. Holding Cody with one arm, Marcos slowly climbed down the ladder. Cody was quickly sent to a nearby hospital, where he's treated for smoke inhalation (吸入). 

"You just don't see a teenager have that kind of braveness," said people around.

Thank you for leaving a single star in your review of Pizzeria. Your review focuses on my service, but I don't think the star is for me. The review system makes you leave at least one star, or I don't think you would have left any at all. 

You write that I gave you "the worst customer service ever. " I'd rather have given you good service, but it was hard for me. I was new to the restaurant. I hadn't learned everything about it. 

You recall (回想) coming up to me and asking if I could offer you a table for eight. You recall that I told you it would be a 30-minute wait. You waited 35 minutes. I believe you. Without your timekeeping, I would have no idea how long you waited. The restaurant was full. I was working as a hostess (a poor one, I take your point), a bartender (酒保) and a server. There were two other servers. Both were new hires. Neither had served in a restaurant before. May I remind you, Joe, that I was also a new hire. I have been serving in restaurants for years, but every restaurant has its own system. 

After 35 minutes of waiting, you came in to check on the progress. A table for eight had just opened up, but it was given to another party of eight. They had booked a few days earlier. I hate breaking promises, Joe, but a reservation (预定) is also a promise. The table was promised twice, and I had to break a promise. 

I am truly sorry. I admit (承认) that while you were waiting outside the restaurant, I didn't think of you-not even once. It is awful to have to wait so long. I wish it could've been better for you.

Recently, people online have been selling verbal abuse (言语辱骂) "services". An internet user pays the seller some money to abuse the victim (受害者) through social media. However, this is not right or legal (合法的). 

To know more about this, Teens talked to Xing Junxia, a lawyer (律师) at the S&P Law Firm in Beijing. 

In life, we may say bad words to people we don't like. If it gets serious, it becomes verbal abuse. "The act of verbal abuse violates(侵犯) the victim's rights, " Xing said. "These words usually hurt the victim's right to reputation (名誉权)， which can lead to civil liability(民事责任). " The attacker (攻击者) should stop this right away. He or she should also formally(正式地) say sorry to the victim. This is to cut down their influence of the abuse. Xing pointed out that both the attacker and the payer should bear civil liability because they do it together. 

In more serious situations, the attacker will face administrative penalties (行政处罚). A man in Qiqihar, Heilongjiang, who ran an online verbal abuse "service" and had abused 25 people, was recently caught. Although he knew it was illegal, he believed it was an easy way to make money. In the end, he was fined 500 yuan and handed over all of the illegal money he had got. 

In the most serious situations, Xing said, verbal abuse can make the victim ill. The attacker should then face criminal liability (刑事责任). It means that he or she may spend time in prison (监狱)，said Xing. 

Thanks to improvements in both health care and personal safety, most people are living healthier, longer lives. Someone who is born today can expect to live 25 years longer than someone who was bon in the 19th century. It's even thought that in the future more and more people will celebrate their hundredth birthday. Here are five rules for a healthy life. 

We all know that we shouldn't run across the road in front of the oncoming traffic, or cycle too close to cars. But we're not sure about how to stay safe in the countryside. When you're out walking you should always go with someone and tell your parents where you're planning to go. Remember! Climbing may also mean falling-what goes up must come down. Safety rules and advice are there to help you, not to make life less fun. 

Sure, it's comfortable to sit on the couch and watch. But experts say you should walk at least 10,000 steps every day to keep fit. In the past, people's jobs required more physical effort. When farmers were working in the fields, they were keeping fit at the same time. Think about it: do you get the same amount of exercise today as they did in the past?

It's important to eat plenty of the right things, above all, fruit, vegetables, and to see fast food or sweets as something very special-maybe just and then. The wrong diet means you'll put on weight, one of the fastest ways to an unhealthy life. 

When we were babies, we slept for much of the day-if our parents were lucky! Teenagers don't need as much sleep but it's important to get about eight hours' sleep. At weekends, you've got more time, so use it not just for your friends, but for rest, too. 

Yes, you knew I was going to say this! But it's so important. More teenagers damage their health through smoking and taking drugs than any other dangers. Think about the effect on your family and friends, and think about its effect on you and your health. 

A newborn baby girl survived the terrible Turkey-Syria earthquake in February, 2023. Finally she found a 1  to call her own after leaving the hospital. 

The baby's mother gave birth to her in the rubble (瓦砾) after their apartment building 2  on top of them. 3 , the mother didn't survive and the newborn girl was found hours later, still 4  to her dead mother by the umbilical cord (脐带). 

Neighbors rushed to the baby and 5  to free her from the rubble. Then they drove her to a hospital. 

6  Associated Press (美联社), the doctor treating the baby, Hani Maarouf, said the baby came in with bruises (瘀伤) 7  was in stable (稳定) condition. 

He added that they believed the baby's mom was 8  when she gave birth, but probably died shortly after it. He also 9  that the baby was born several hours before being found and probably, wouldn't have survived if she had stayed an hour longer in the 10  rubble. 

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the baby girl had 11  not only her mom during the earthquake but also her four siblings (兄弟姐妹) and father. Thousands of people showed 12  in adopting (收养) the child born in the rubble, but as it turned out, a distant relative heard about her 13  and came forward to adopt her. 

The baby's great-uncle on her father's side, Salah al-Badran, 14  to take the newborn in. 15 , he lost his house and was living with his family of 11 in a tent. 

The traditional Chinese Longtaitou Festival, or the Dragon Head-Raising Festival, is the second day of the second lunar (农历的) month every year. This year it is on March 11. 

The dragon is one of the greatest  (symbol) in Chinese culture. It brings wind and rain. It is said that every year on that day, the dragon raises its head after its winter sleep. This is  we call the day "the Dragon Head-Raising Day" (Longtaitou). Because they believe that there will be more rain after Longtaitou. Old people think of it  the start of spring and farming. And rain is of great  (important) to farming. 

Nowadays, many customs  (disappear). But having a haircut remains and it is still popular. People have their hair cut on the Dragon Head-Raising Day after a whole month. Many believe  (strong) that a haircut during the first lunar month may bring bad luck to their (mother) brothers. So they cut it on that day and expect  (bring) them good luck. Also, it is a tradition to eat certain food such as dumplings, noodles and so on. Dumplings and noodles  (call) separately dragons' ears (long'er) and dragons' bear (longxu). As the old saying goes, eating dumplings does not freeze your ears. 

People celebrate this  (tradition) festival in various ways, and the most important is that the festival has been passed on and it shows the best wishes and good luck.
