Tom Costello was once afraid of homeless Americans. That changed seven years ago1 his wife, a volunteer at a homeless shelter, asked him to help with a holiday dinner for shelter residents ( 居 民 ). Costello remembers going to a2 and buying socks for the residents. He knew many of them were in3 of clothing. At the shelter, Costello said, he dropped a pair of4 into a bag for a woman. She asked him5 she could have socks for a friend who wasn't with her that day. He gave6 another pair. "She started to cry and told me that7 had ever given her socks before." Costello said.

Costello said his hope for "The Joy of Sox" was for it to be the best sock charity in the world. 

When I was in the first year of high school, I began to do some part-time jobs. But I quickly got tired of my first job and decided    a change.

Then, a close friend of mine   me with a job at a sandwich shop in my town. It paid better and had better working hours. But I    it, too. However, I got to work to make money, so I kept working there  a year.

Then at my last high school year, my best friend brought me to a farm. At that time, the farm    needed some people to help with farm chores. So I took this job    I still worked at the sandwich shop.

After a few days of working on the farm, I could do many chores by   and I really enjoyed the job! Anyway, I had    doing two jobs as well as studying at school. So I    made the decision to give up experiences of my life on the farm.

Have you tried to run or walk for exercise and then given up? If you answered yes, you should try a new kind of exercise: aquatic (水中的) exercise. Aquatic exercise is like exercise on land, but you do it in a swimming pool. More and more people are trying aquatic exercise.

Aquatic exercise feels easier than exercising on land. Why? You weigh about 90% less in the pool. It is better for your knees than running or walking. Water is about 1,000 times thicker and heavier than air. To move through the water, your body has to work four times as hard. So you can burn (燃烧) more calories (卡路里).

In fact, most people say they feel more relaxed in the water. They stop thinking about the worrying things. The cool, quiet environment makes them feel good.

But what if you are afraid of the water? No problem! There is nothing to worry about. Aquatic exercise is safe and easy to learn. It doesn't need any special skills. You don't even need to know how to swim. Aquatic exercise is for everyone.

①Animal behavior (行为) is an interesting and attractive study. Scientists research the ways animals use to look for food. They study how animals protect themselves from their predators, and which animals kill other animals for food. All of these help us understand how useful animals can be.

②Each country or culture raises some animals for food. In the United States, people mainly eat meat from cows and chickens. In other countries, people might raise sheep or buffalo for meat. These differences come in part from weather and other environmental conditions. People around the world eat all kinds of fish and shellfish from oceans and rivers. In some countries, people don't always choose some animal groups, such as dogs, for food while in other countries such animals may become people's favorite food.

③In West Africa, animals provide humans with more than food. They have been helping people do daily work for thousands of years. Horses, oxen, and other work animals pull heavy things. Elephants, camels, and other animals carry people and things from place to place. Carrier pigeons (信鸽) have been used to send messages.

④People also receive health benefits (利益) from animals. For example, dogs and cats can help calm people down. This is helpful for people in fighting illnesses. Animals can also reduce stress, helping people to draw their attention to learning new information, such as reading. When people are walking their dogs,it encourages exercise.

⑤Animals and humans share space on Earth, so keeping a healthy relationship with animals around us is in our best interest.

You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine the two singing opera in English instead of speaking poetic (诗意的) Chinese?

Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions (《红楼梦》), written by Cao Xueqin(1715- 1763). Some artists made the book into an English-language opera. They first put the opera on the stage in September, 2016 in San Francisco, US. And the next year it came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan.

Many  of the  opera's  creators  have  backgrounds ( 背 景 )  in  both  Chinese  and  American  cultures. Their understanding of both cultures helped them to change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.

The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters and hundreds of characters. But opera writer David Henry Hwang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Hwang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a heartbroken tragedy ( 悲剧) so that everyone would understand it.

The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreigners understand the characters by using costumes and stage settings (布景). He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin shows up on stage, there is usually water around her on the stage.

The creators consider it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to western audience ( 观众 ). Hwang told China Daily, "I am happy to have made a contribution to the land where my parents were born."

Let's face it — all of us have our own bad habits. We may bite our nails (咬指甲). Others might break into others ' words often. Young people always stay up at night. Have no fear (害怕)! Today I will teach you to beat your bad habits.

  Those bad habits would produce bad influences and would finally lead to bad results. So pay attention to yourself on personal development and build your social circle.

Recognize (辨认) the bad habit you want to break. If you don't believe you have a bad habit or you don't know why some things just keep happening to you over and over, get answers from the people around you. They may help recognize whether (是否) your habit is bad or not.

Decide how serious you are about breaking the habit. If you know it clearly, you will be able to achieve your goal. You can write down when, where and why you do the habit.  Think about what you wrote.

Think about a healthy habit that could take the place of your bad habit. Catch yourself doing the bad habit and stop yourself. Practice the healthy habit instead. Practice this as often as you want.The more you practice a behavior, the sooner it will become a habit.
