Birth order——does it matter? Are you different because you are the first, second, or third child in your family—or maybe the last of nine?

A study found that first-borns have an average IQ that is three point s higher than people who fall into a different place in the birth order, perhaps because first-borns often help younger brothers and sisters, which improves their own skills. In 2007, an international organization of CEOs found that 43% of CEOs are first-borns,33% are middle children, and 23% are last-borns. First-borns are more likely to be doctors and astronauts and get higher pay.

If first-borns are more successful, last-borns are generally more agreeable(讨人喜欢的).They are also more likely to be funny, possibly to get attention from all the bigger people at the dinner table. Mark Twain and Stephen Colbert are both the youngest in large families, and Jim Carrey is the youngest of four. According to a 2007 Time magazine article, "The Power of Birth Order", last-borns are more likely to be artists and successful businessmen.

Then there are the middle children:We have not ignored(忽视) them! Many middle children are short of one on one time with their parents. They often feel  short changed:The oldest gets more rights, and the youngest is spoiled(宠坏的). Though they may be ignored, middle children are more likely to grow into easy-going adults.

Many factors(因素) make us who we are, but if the research is correct, birth order may be one of the most important factors.

While the rest of the city is crowded and noisy, several old men are sitting in their ancient hutong, drinking tea and playing chess. This is a typical day in a Beijing hutong.

Beijing hutongs have a very special place in the rich history of According to experts, the word hutong originated from(起源于) the Mongolian language,meaning"well(井)". In ancient times, people preferred to get together and live around wells. So the original meaning of hutong should be"a place where people get together and live". There are other explanations, too.

No matter what hutong exactly means, it is commonly agreed that hutongs first appeared in Beijing during the Yuan Dynasty. In the Yuan Dynasty, there were about 29 hutongs. The number increased during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Nobody knows exactly how many hutongs there are in Beijing today. But one thing is for sure——if we connected all the hutongs together, it would be even longer than the Great Wall! If you come to Beijing, don't forget to visit Beijing hutongs! You    must enjoy yourself!

During the cold winter, we usually catch a cold, have a fever or a cough. There are some common and great ways that you can follow to keep yourself away from these problems.

Never leave your house without warm clothes. It might be sunny in the morning or daytime but it is getting colder as the sun sets. So make sure you have a sweater or a coat for the colder night.

Don't walk without shoes in your house. We have a habit of staying bare feet at home. The cold passes from feet to head in no time and that is why we need to wear shoes to stay away from the cold.

Drinking green tea helps your body get warm during the colder days. Drinking green tea keeps your body healthy and solves many health problems. Green tea is even good for those who want to get thinner.

Still if you catch a cold, do not let the cold build up in your body. It's better to take a quick action against the cold through proper exercise. Do some warm-up exercise in the morning or rub (摩擦) your hands quickly. Jogging(慢跑) or yoga also helps your body become warm to stay away from the cold and fever.

Follow these simple ways, and you'll enjoy the winter greatly.

Mr Smith is fifty years old. He began to teach in a middle school twenty-six years ago. He expects his students to be honest and is strict with them. Some of his students, become famous people, but they still remember him and often write to him. Of course he is proud of it.

Some of the new students were told about him, but the others didn't know him well. He told them how to be an honest person.An d he said, "I hate telling a lie."

If you live in a place where most people speak the language you are learning, you may use the language for several hours each day. So it may become part of your "inner speech". In other (word), you start thinking in that language. Your mind stops (try) to translate things from your native language into the second language. But most of the English learners live in places where English is not the main language. This may be true for you. You may not have many chances to practice English. You may even (be) self taught.

Thinking in English really helps! It is not very difficult, it does need practice.Here we will share some mental exercises. A good first step is to think in words. Look around you.What do you see? In your head, try to name each object in your surroundings. Charles Thomas has taught English for over 10 years. He tells his students to name the things  the y see around them, wherever they are.

Another exercise Thomas suggests is describing in your mind the objects that you don't know the words for. An example would be if you couldn't think of the word"garage". Thomas says, "If you're looking at your house and you see your garage, but you can't think of the name in English,you can say, ‘The place inside which I put my car', you can say, ‘It's next to my house. . I keep things there'."

The next exercise is thinking in (simply) sentences. For example, if you are sitting in a park, you can tell (you) things like, "It's such a beautiful day" and "People are playing sports with their friends". You can also describe your daily (activity). Thomas asks his students to describe their day using the simple present verb form. So,they would think to themselves things like,"I put on my shirt"and"He drives the bus".

How much time should you spend on these exercises? Thomas says you do a little every day."When you make things a habit, then it just pops up into your mind without (think)and then, before you know it, really, you're thinking in English."

My grandmother left me almost 18 years ago but I still miss her every day. She was such an important part of my life.

My mom, dad, brothers and I lived in her old house for most of my childhood. When I close my eyes and open my heart, that is how I remember her. I can still see her in her flower print,cotton dress. I can hear her high-pitched(尖声的) voice say"Hello" as I opened the door after school. And her arms opened to give me a big hug. I can even remember how she smelled. When she hugged me I could feel the love and joy coming from her heart into mine.

I thought I knew everything about my grandmother but amazingly, I am still learning more about her even today. Just yesterday an old family friend stopped to talk to me at the post office.She told me what happened when she visited my grandmother long time ago. They were sitting around the dining table talking and our friend noticed my grandmother's lovely earrings(耳环).She told my grandmother how much she liked them and asked if she could leave them to her in her will(遗嘱). Without a second thought, my sweet grandmother took them off and gave them to her.

I decided that I want to regard grandmother as my role model. I will care more about people and less about things.
