The earth has warmed by about 1°F (华氏度) over the past 100 years，but why and how? Well，scientists are not quite sure.Maybe the earth gets warmer and warmer on its own.But many scientists say that people are doing many things that make the earth warmer.

First，greenhouse effect (温室效应) is a very important reason for the change of the earth.People give out too much energy into the air every year.It makes the earth warmer.Climate (气候) change is another important reason.Sometimes it becomes too hot and sometimes too cold.Sometimes there is too much rain and sometimes too little.The change of the climate makes the earth warmer.In turn，the warmth of the earth changes the climate，too.

When the earth becomes warmer，there may be more rain and a rise in sea level (水平).It will affect the growth of plants，animals and people.On a Pacific island，100 people have to move to higher ground because the sea is rising (上升).These people can no longer live on the island.Before that，two islands without people went underwater in 1999.Scientists say that the seas can rise by nearly one meter by 2100.

People can affect the earth's air，land and water.As for us，we can do many things to protect the earth.For example，we can use fridges less.We can tell more people about protecting the earth.

It was a cold November morning several years ago.My alarm clock had just gone off，but I was having trouble getting out of bed.My dad died a few weeks ago.I felt weighed down by sadness and depression (抑郁).

Tough (坚强的) and strong，my dad had worked so hard all of his life to support us.He would sometimes shout at my brothers and me，but I always knew that he loved me.Still，he had been raised in a traditional way and raised us that way too.I couldn't remember，for example，ever being hugged by him.

I sighed (叹气) and got out of my bed.I turned on the lights and walked into the hallway.I saw my son Jim walking down the hall to meet me.Suddenly，he opened his arms and gave me a heartfelt hug.And just as he did，I heard my dad's voice deep inside of me say，"Joey，this hug is from me！" I cried and smiled at the same time.In that moment，in the place where heart，mind，and spirit all met，I felt loved.I felt loved by my dad.I felt loved by life.

Do you know what music people like listening to? If you ask them，you may likely get many different answers.Why do different people have different musical preferences(偏好)? What do these differences say about us?

Researchers from Cambridge University set out to answer these questions.They asked 350，000 people from 50 different countries.Then，they discovered musical preferences have some relation with personality.Outgoing people，for example，prefer danceable music with strong beats such as rap.Country music fans are shown to be more serious in their jobs.One of the findings is quite interesting.The researchers thought that people with much stress should like either sad music or rhythmic(有节奏的) music.But it turned out that these people like neither.

Instead，they prefer loud music.Perhaps they like to listen to this kind of music to lower their stress.

The researchers also found that climates(气候) may influence people's musical preferences and personalities.People in hot weather prefer danceable music.They are more outgoing.This may be a result of longer daylight hours.They encourage people to go outdoors to dance.

Of course，nothing is clearcut.We may not group people simply by their musical tastes.The Cambridge study just showed us that people of different cultures are more similar than we think."People are divided by language and culture，" said Dr.David Grenberg，the leading researcher."But if an outgoing person in one part of the world likes the same music as outgoing people elsewhere，then we can say that music is really like a bridge."

The earth is about 4，600 million years old.And we have changed our planet a lot in many ways. 

All over the world，people have cut down millions of trees，so more and more kinds of animals and plants are disappearing.In big cities，factories have polluted the land and the water. Around the earth，there's a special kind of oxygen (O₂) called "ozone (O₃)"． But now air pollution is destroying it and has made a very big hole in the ozone layer (臭氧层).Too much harmful light from the sun passes through it and reaches the earth directly.This is very dangerous because it can cause cancer.

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the air has increased a lot.It mainly comes from different kinds of burning materials.It has formed a "blanket (毛毯)" around the earth.The heat from the sun can't escape，so the temperature is rising. Therefore，this causes the level of the ocean to rise.

 We must do something to stop our earth from being polluted.
