On July 14, 2017, Maryam Mirzakhani, Stanford professor of mathematics and the first female winner of the Fields Medal in Mathematics, died at the age of 40. 

The news was especially hard-hitting for a generation of younger academics who have always held Maryam to be a role model whose example is helping redefine (重新定义) women's status in science and especially in mathematics. What was fun was that Maryam always tried to avoid the media's spotlight. Despite being the first woman to gain such high status in the world of mathematics—winning what's often called the "Nobel Prize of Math"—her modesty (谦逊) and simplicity stood out to those who knew her.

Maryam originally wanted to be a writer, a passion of hers that never faded away even during her postgraduate studies. However, she found an even greater joy in how rewarding it felt to solve mathematical problems. As a student, she was the first female member of Iran's national team to participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad(IMO), and she won two gold medals in two years, which is still a record. 

She received her bachelor's degree in Iran and later studied at Harvard. In 2014, Maryam was recognized with the Fields Medal, the highest-ranking award in mathematics. Her work focused on curved surfaces like sphere ( 球 体 ) . Her achievements have applications in other scientific fields including engineering and material science. Unfortunately, at that time she was already fighting against the breast cancer. 

Maryam's legend ( 传 奇 )may continue to grow after her early death. Still only 20 percent of full-time math teachers at U. S. universities are women. The example of a woman who rose to the top of this still very male field may help inspire math's next generation. 

In the same way people think of Marie Curie or Jane Goodall as scientific pioneers, Maryam Mirzakhani will go down in history as a pioneer as well as a mathematical genius. 

Sometimes we are picturing what sport we might do: working out at the gym, playing on a competitive sports team, swimming, biking, or rock climbing. However, we don't often think of martial arts as possible activities; instead, we rule them out because we think they're dangerous, uncommon, and even, impossible. Martial arts aren't considered a sport, right?

Well, here's some good news:you're wrong! Martial arts. aren't much more common than people think, and you can start learning at any age. Practicing martial arts is a great way to keep in shape, both physically and mentally. They're much less boring and much less arduous than they're usually described as in movies, so do not worry that they need a lot of effort. 

Martial arts generally require you to focus on the position and movement of every one of your legs and arms, sometimes even your breathing too. Think about it: when you leave the gym, your mental state has improved and you are much calmer. This is because you've only paid attention to one activity. It is a great way to clear your head. And practicing martial arts can help you lean to stay more focused, which is the greatest advantage of martial arts training. 

Martial arts also improve your coordination( 协 调 性 ) , and greatly improve your posture. I have personally seen students go from slouching (没精打采)to walking tall with their shoulders back in just a couple of months.  

There are many styles and countless kinds of martial arts. Whichever one you like better, know that all of them are good choices. 

Monkfish are low in calories and they are easy to cook. They can be cut into pieces, mixed with egg whites, cornflour and salt, and then put into boiling water for a few minutes. There is only one problem with monkfish: they are ugly. With their eyes sticking out and wide mouths full of sharp teeth, they are frightening. 

In the Netherlands, fishermen who caught them used to throw them back. They are still usually sold without their heads, but the days of throwing them away are long gone. Japanese diners love the fatty liver (肝脏);while Italians may still call them toad (蟾蜍) tails, that doesn't stop them from eating the fish. People have been encouraged to eat more monkfish, as well as other unattractive creatures—in order to ensure the biodiversity (生物多样性)of the ocean environment. 

There are more examples for sea animals going from "purposely avoided" to "willingly consumed". In America, lobsters used to be fed to prisoners—a result of their abundance (充裕)but also, no doubt, because they are difficult to eat and look frightening. Not until the late 19th century did they become fantastic dish. Today they are so desirable that Maine, where most American lobsters are caught, has the images of these creatures printed on many of its vehicles.

Sometimes fashion goes the other way. Turtles were plentiful in early America, but in the 19th century they became fashionable: few foods were more recommended than turtle soup. Americans ate some species of turtle nearly to extinction ( 灭 绝 ) . Yet today turtle-eating is more closely associated with remote and uncultured areas. 

Among cooking choices, people prefer the rare and the beautiful one than the unattractive one. But such narrow-minded food choices can have bad results: some species may not survive human preference for them. Better to stare into monkfish's eyes than to contribute to the permanent (永久的) loss of a species. 

Silence provides our mind and body with much-needed rest. It is also beneficial for the brain. If you want to know how to add the power of silence to your daily life, here are three ways. 

Spend some time offline every day

From smartphones to laptops and music systems, we spend most of our time on electronic devices. Although technology has become an important part of our lives, the noise our smart devices generate can be harmful to our wellbeing. 

 You can start with 10-15 minutes each day and increase it depending on your needs.

Go out into nature

Spending time in nature can help you get in touch with your inner self, reduce stress and comfort a troubled mind.  Head out to the nearest park or forest and spend time in nature. You can spend a least 15-30 minutes every day surrounding yourself with green spaces. 

You can either do this early in the morning before starting your daily routine or in the evening after finishing your day. Don't look at your smartphones while spending time in nature. Just be with yourself, and replace the noises of everyday life with the comforting sounds of birds. .

We spend a lot of time talking every day.  But how can we stay silent and just listen? You can do that by being mindful of your thoughts. Do not speak for speaking, but because your speech has some value to. add to a conversation. Allow yourself to listen carefully to others and respond appropriately.

When I was 14, I invited some friends for a party at our home out in the country. I planned it well, but something 1  happened. When it was time for us to ride the bus, Nora, one of my friends, didn't2 .

Hong Kong film director Wong Kar-wai's first television series, Blossoms Shanghai(《繁花》),  (begin)airing on December 27. The hit drama, which has been six years in the making, is adapted  the 2012 novel of the same name,  (write)by Jin Yucheng in Shanghainese. 

Set in Shanghai during the 1990s, the  (romance)drama features a young man, Abao,  rises from small beginnings to become a successful businessman in the space of 10 years. Along the way, he receives help from partners such as Ling Zi, Miss Wang, and Uncle Ye, with his aim  (explore)his bigger business empire.

Jin wrote Blossoms Shanghai hoping it would help erase stereotypes( 刻 板 印 象 ) of Shanghai improve readers' understanding of the culture of the city. Staying true to the novel' distinctive local flavour, the television series' leading actors were all bom and raised in Shanghai and a lot of the dialogue is in Shanghainese.  (additional), a lot of effort was made to recreate the look and feel truly of Shanghai in the 1990s. 

In typical Wong Kar-wai style, the show's filming took three years to complete; the director is well known for  (be)very particular about each and every shot, often requiring actors to perform a scene 10 or more  (time).

Last summer vacation, I traveled to Sanya in Hainan. China. When my dad told me one of the items on the journey would be one of the highest water slides (水上滑梯)in Asia, I asked my dad repeatedly whether I could stay at home. But my dad said that I would love it and we should go together. 

Three days later, I was standing in front of that water slide in Atlantics Waterpark. The slide was located in a building. When I looked up at the thousands of stairs leading to the peak of the building, I thought to myself, "If I fall from that place, I will definitely die. "

As we started climbing the stairs, I saw three words on the wall: Leap of Faith(信仰之跃). I had never heard of these words, and at that time they reminded me of death rather than success. Five meters, ten meters . . . I looked down and thought, "I am going to die today. "Fifteen meters, twenty meters. . . I thought about many things I hadn't done and asked my dad whether I had life insurance. Twenty-five meters, thirty meters. . . and we were finally at the top, ready to jump into the slide. I looked at the three people next to me and thought, "These are the last three people I will see in my life. "
