When Paul Durietz taught his first social studies class, the Beatles(披头士乐队) had not yet broken up. Pele, then 29, had just won his third World Cup title(冠军). And Durietz hasn't walked away from the subject since. Now, the 76-year-old 1  the Guinness world record for the longest career(职业生涯) as a social studies teacher.

He got his first teaching job in 1970 at Woodland Middle School in the U. S. state of Illinois. He has been teaching social studies at the same school ever since. Anand is from a city in the south of India. In 2017, he was working as an engineer at a car part company. 

One day that year, Anand and his friends passed by a smelly, dirty lake. All of a sudden, he tripped(绊倒) and fell into the lake. When his friends pulled him up, he remembered that this lake used to be clean years ago. "Why is it so dirty now?" he wondered.

Something had to be done about it. Anand wanted to get his company to help clean up the lake. He did a lot of research for the project. He found that this lake had once been part of a big network(网状系统) of lakes. About 1, 500 years ago, the Chola Dynasty(朱罗王朝) built this lake network to supply water for farmland. 

Anand spent four months studying the Chola methods. All this work won him a social responsibility grant(补助金) from his company. 

What's next then? Get people to join his project! Luckily, Anand found hundreds of volunteers in the company. They began to work right away. 

By clearing the lake of waste and muck(淤泥), they opened up its blocked(堵塞的) waterways. Then, they built five small islands with the muck and grew many plants on them. Six months later, when Anand boated on the clean lake, he was filled with joy. 

Later, Anand left his job to set up a non-profit organization(非营利组织). The NPO works to cleanup more lakes. So far, it has cleaned up 35 lakes in the city. Anand's work has not only improved the environment, but also provided clean water for farming and drinking. 

Xunpu is a small fishing village in Fujian Province. Last year, a few ladies took pictures there and shared them online. In the photos, their hair was tied into buns(发髻) and they wore a wreath(花冠). There were fresh, plastic and silk flowers on the wreath. It is called "Zanhuawei. " The photos were widely spread online. Many tourists started to come to the village. In less than six months, the number of zanhua stores there grew from less than 10 to more than 150.

The tradition of wearing flowers has been a part of local life since the Tang Dynasty. The village is famous for its good seafood. When female villagers sell their seafood at the local market, they put flowers in their hair. This way, buyers can distinguish(识别) them from sellers in nearby villages. 

The tradition is also seen at happy events such as weddings. Locals send out invitation cards along with flowers. In turn, their female guests wear the flowers to the event. 

 ★  Kids braid(编织) their hair and put flowers on their temples(鬓). Teenagers tie their hair into a round bun and put flowers in it. Middle-aged women often wear spiral(螺旋形的)buns. They put flowers and gold ornaments(金饰) in their hair. As for elderly women, they prefer red flowers, head scarves and other ornaments. 

"If you put flowers in your hair in this life, " the locals believe, "you will be pretty in the afterlife!" In 2008, the tradition was listed as part of China's intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产).

Lauren is a 17-year-old girl from Iowa, U. S. A. Her parents plant soybeans(大豆) and corn on their farm every year, so she was familiar(熟悉) with  (farm) from a young age. 

In 2020, Lauren (volunteer) at a food bank. She found that there were very few fresh vegetables in the food. "Can I start a garden on part of our farm?" she asked her parents. "I want to provide vegetables for people in n. " Her parents agreed.

Lauren decided to plant 15 different vegetables on about 2, 000 square meters of land. These crops  (include) carrots, tomatoes, green beans and more. It took a lot of hard work to grow them.  the hot summer, she had to w her crops by hand for two hours a day. She also checked for weeds(杂草) daily. 

In 2022, Lauren harvested her first crops. They w about 18 kilograms. So far, she has d more than 3, 000 kilograms of crops. She p to expand(扩张) her garden to 8, 000square meters in 2025. "I want to help feed more people, " said the girl. "Helping others makes me feel the (happy)!"
