There were two fishermen who were good at fishing. One day they went to a beautiful 1  to fish. One of them enjoyed fishing by 2 , while the other was an outgoing person who loved to make friends with different people by fishing.

I was 15 months old, a happy carefree kid, until the day I fell. It was a bad fall. A piece of glass cut my eye badly. From then on, my injured sightless（失明的）, cloudy gray eye lived on with me. Sometimes people asked me unpleasant questions. Whenever kids played games, I was always the "monster（怪物）". I was always imagining that everyone looked down on me.

Yet Mom would say to me, "Hold your head up high and face the world." I began to depend on that saying. As a child, I thought Mom meant, "Be careful or you will fall down or knock into something because you are not looking."

As a teenager, I usually looked down to hide my shame. But I found that when I held my head up high, people liked me. 

In high school I even became the class monitor, but in my heart I still felt like a monster. All I really wanted was to look like everyone else. When things got really bad, I would cry to my mom and she would look at me with loving eyes and say, "Hold your head up high and face the world. Let them see the beauty that is inside instead of your appearance."

My mom's love was the sunshine that made me bright. I had faced hard times, and learned not only to be confident but also to have deep compassion（同情）for others.

"Hold your head up high" has been heard many times in my home. I say it to my children. The gift my mom gave me lives on.

In one community in Shanxi, a voluntary service team started last October nicknamed "Shared Children", which works hard to support elderly empty nesters（空巢老人）, is getting popular.

The 108 volunteers have already made a big difference within the Chaoyang community. They have paired off with 71 elderly people to learn about their daily needs and offer a helping hand. 

In recent years, the community has come up with many ideas. At first, they started a project called "Knocking on the Door", hoping that the elderly would connect the leaders often. However, the community did not have enough staff to support so many elderly people. So, the idea of "shared children" came out.

"The Shared Children voluntary service allows kind people to join in public activities for the elderly people in their spare time," says Guo, adding that not only did the local people join in with great love, but many staff members from supermarkets, banks and other working units also joined in.

By March, the number of the volunteers in the team had reached 108. Their work has also included buying things, providing spiritual comfort, helping dealing with health problems and other duties. 

The volunteers are not all youngsters. Fan Fawen, a retired train driver, joined to support the volunteer team last year. He often helps to repair something in elderly people's homes and buys them fruit and vegetables, as well as carrying heavy stuff, like rice bags, upstairs.

Liu Chunyan, 41, is also among the volunteers. "Many elderly people now live alone and feel lonely, so we should be there and chat with them more often." Liu says.

"More people are now starting to learn about the team. We believe that more people will join us in the future," says Hao Guoying, secretary of the community's Party branch.

What is adolescence (青春期)? It starts when you are aged between about ten and thirteen. You may not want to spend as much time with your parents as you used to. You want more freedom to choose who you see and when you see. In the past, your parents made decisions for you. But now you want to decide things for yourself and don't want to be told what to do all the time.

All these changes are perfectly normal.  So what can you do to make life easier and get on well with your parents?

Firstly, your parents will feel much better if you let them know that you still love and value them.  They may not say so, but they are probably feeling a sense of loss and may even feel be rejected (拒绝) by you. So try to express your love to them from time to time.

You may feel these rules are unnecessary, but your parents' main concern is often just to keep you safe. Once you have agreed with the rules, try to stick to them.

Thirdly, try to understand why they might be irritated (生气) by your behaviour. Do your parents get cross if you spend three hours chatting with friends on social media and leave your homework till the last minute? 

Finally, it's all about communication! Keep talking to your parents, tell them about what you did today, let them know where you are going, and ask for advice if you need.
