    Tearless Onions Go on Sale

UK supermarket Waitrose has started selling a new type of "tearless" onions called Sunions. Many people find that chopping onions makes them cry. This is because onions give off chemicals that make your eyes water. Plant breeder Rick Waston crossed several types of onions to create a version that was the least pungent (刺激性的). There's just one catch—they are three times more expensive than Waitrose's cheapest own-brand onions.

"See" with a Bionic (仿生) Eye

An 88-year-old woman who was blind in her left eye can now see with it again—thanks to a microchip placed under her retina. The retina is a light-sensitive (感光的) area at the back of the eye. The chip picks up video signals from a camera fitted on a special pair of glasses. The signals are then sent to the brain, which understands them as if they were produced by natural vision. The patient, who has received the implant (移植), said, "I'm excited at the possibility of enjoying my hobbies again. "

"To me, plastic waste basically is aboveground crude oil (原油), " says Guoliang Liu, a chemist at Virginia Tech. The team hopes to partner with industry to make plastic waste a bit cleaner.

One of my favorite inventions in recent years is face unlocking. Without needing to lift my fingers and type in the numbers, I can get straight into my phone with just a look. Now there is a new technology designed to replace the password called the "passkey"!

Passkeys turn your phone into something a bit like a wallet, which you can use to store membership cards to all of your apps and services. When you need to log in to a website, you'll just have to tap a button on your phone and your passkey wallet will let you in without any worry.

And how does it keep this wallet safe? By using the same biometric (生物统计) "check your phone uses—a face scan or a fingerprint that cannot easily be forged.

Passkeys won't just save us from having to remember passwords but, perhaps logging in with a passkey will actually be much safer than typing a password. This is because it uses a technology called "public key" cryptography (密码) which is one of the building blocks of the Internet-and is how computers have securely communicated with other computers for so many years. To put it simply, it works a bit like a key, instead of a password.

With a password, the website has to keep a database (数据库) of everyone's passwords to check against when you log in. But with a passkey, when you create your account on a website, it will effectively create a new lock and key. The website will keep the lock,     ★     .

I think it's a really clever idea, and that passkeys are going to make our digital lives even safer. So, next time you're complaining that you can't remember your password, don't worry too much. It won't always be like this!

    A、biometric check B、cryptography technology C、blocks of Internet D、secure communication
(4)、Which of the following can be put in     ★     ?
A、but your phone is safer B、so you won't forget the key C、or it will remember the key D、and only your phone will have the key
(5)、The passage is written to _______.

Last fall a beaver (海狸) moved into the small stream beside our house. He began taking down small trees right away, and in a couple of weeks our stream turned into a pond. Every day, he (add) more to his dam (坝) and to his house. As we saw the work that this beaver did over a very short period of time, we understand the saying, "as b as a beaver".

We thought that would be the last of the beaver's activity as winter came. To our , however, he started chewing on a very large tree. We were amazed at the this beaver was trying. All winter, he chewed and chewed. He had setbacks as we faced major winter storms and (freeze) weather. But when the weather allowed, he would be sure to come back and chew a bit more.

The beaver's first goal was to survive—to build home for the winter. Working every day with that goal in mind, he (successful) achieved it. But the large tree he started chewing on last fall was a future goal-he wanted the large tree to p new food and branches for the coming spring.

Our beaver's experience r us that we need to set goals for tomorrow. Sometimes just surviving seems to take up all of our time. But if you do just a little bit when time allows and s to your future goal, you will succeed. Keep chewing the beaver, and you will realize your dream in the end.
