"The boys said that I can't." said Tom in a sad voice.

"Don't mind what they said. Let them see that you can do it." said Mrs. White.

"I don't think I can." said Tom. "The poem is so long and difficult for me. But I want to try my best to recite it."

"Well, dear son." said Mrs. White, "Look at that snail (蜗牛) on the wall. How slow it is! Watch it. You will see it get to the top at last. So just try a few lines each day, and you may recite it in the end."

Tom thought he could catch up with the boys, and he might run a race with the snail. So he planned to try it.

At last, the day came. The teacher called up the boys to recite the poem. After six boys had recited it, it was Tom's turn. Most of the boys thought Tom could fail. But to their surprise, Tom did not miss a word. His heart was full of joy when the teacher said, "Well done, Tom!" After the rest of the class had tried, the teacher said Tom did best.

"And now tell us how you could recite the poem so well." said the teacher.

"A snail on the wall taught me how to do it." said Tom.

There was a loud laugh when Tom said this. But the teacher said, "Don't laugh!     ◆▲     How did the snail teach you, Tom?"

"I saw it climb up the wall bit by bit. It didn't stop. At last, it climbed to the top. And I thought I could do the same. So I recited it bit by bit, and did not give up." said Tom.

"Well done, Tom!" said the teacher. "Now boys, let us give a good cheer to Tom and the s nail on the wall." The classroom rang with a great cheer.

With more and more rain falling, it's time for snakes to be active. Living in the city, it never crosses your mind that we might meet them face to face.

Most people are afraid of snakes. They may think snakes are dangerous and ugly. There are more than 2,000 kinds of snakes. Most of them live in mountains or forests, and in cities sometimes we can find them in grass or other dark places. Snakes can't walk or run because they have no legs or feet, but these long and thin animals can move very fast on their stomachs. Snakes usually have green, yellow or black skins, which make it difficult for their enemies to find them. In winter they hibernate in holes. They look for a hole to stay inside, in the ground, or in a rock or a tree. They do not wake up again until spring comes. Snakes feed on mice, frogs, bird eggs and so on.

Snakes play an important part in nature. We can make useful medicine with them. Without their help, the rodents (啮齿动物) will be out of control. But many of them are in danger of disappearing. Houses and buildings take up the land where snakes live. Many snakes lose their lives in traffic, and people often kill snakes for their skins or meat.

History of the Olympic games

In the old days the Olympic games were religious activities. Greece held the first ancient Olympic games in 776BBC. The games lasted just for one day. Only men could be in the game. Women had no right to take part in the Olympic games until 1900.

The first modern Olympic games were held in Greece in 1896. Just 311 men from 14 countries competed in 43 events in nine sports. Starting in 1896, the Olympic games were held every four years except during the World Wars I and II. In the 2012 London Olympic Games, about10500 athletes from 204 countries took part in 302 events.

The first winter Olympics were held in 65. France in 1924 to give athletes chance to compete in snow and ice sports. The Winter Olympics are held every four years, two years after each Summer Olympics.
