Once, a man and his wife worked for an old man. There was a big box in the man's living room. The old man pointed to the box and said, "There's only one thing you 1 do. Don't open the box. There are two terms in a school year in America. The first is from September to January, and the second is from February to June. 

American children usually begin to go to school at the age of five. Most students are 17 or 18 years old when they finish high school. High school students have only four or five subjects each term. They usually go to the same class every day, and they have homework for each class. After class they do many interesting things. 

After high school, many students go to college. They usually have to pay a lot of money. So many college students work after class to get the money for their studies. 

①Marie Curie is a famous scientist who is most famous for discovering two new radioactive elements (放射性元素). During the First World War, Marie Curie invented a great machine which have helped over one million soldiers. 

②Marie Curie was born in Poland on the 7th November 1867. Marie's parents were both teachers and her father would often teach her science at home. When she grew older, Marie wanted to go to university and learn all about physics. Unluckily, at the time women were not allowed to study in Poland. This meant that Marie had to move to France where she was allowed to go to university.

③After she had learnt all about physics at university, Marie worked in a lab with her husband, Pierre Curie. During this time, Marie made great progress and discovered two new radioactive elements which had never been seen before. Because of her amazing discoveries and work in science, Marie Curie became the first woman ever to win a Nobel Prize. A few years later, Marie went on to win a second Nobel Prize which made her the first person ever to win two Nobel Prizes!

④When the First World War started, Marie Curie knew she had to do something to help. Marie had realized that wounded soldiers recovered better if they were treated quickly. Putting her knowledge and understanding of radiation to good use, Marie decided to invent a machine which could help soldiers close to the front. 

⑤Although she was born over 150 years ago, Marie's work is still well known. Amazingly, some treatments being used in hospitals today started out as inventions in her lab. Many places even use Marie's name as recognition of the great work she carried out.

Many people say dolphins (海豚) are intelligent (聪明的). They seem to be able to think, understand, and learn things quickly. But are they as smart as humans, or are they more like cats and dogs? Dolphins use their brains (大脑) quite differently from the way humans do. But scientists say dolphins and humans are alike in some ways. How?

Communication

Like humans, every dolphin has its own "name. " The name is a special whistle (口哨声). Each dolphin chooses a specific whistle for itself, usually by its first birthday. Dolphins are like people in other ways, too. They "talk" to each other about a lot of things — such as their age, their feelings, and finding food. They also use a system of sounds and body language to communicate. Understanding dolphin conversation is not easy for humans. No one "speaks dolphin" yet, but some scientists are trying to learn.

Play

Dolphins are also social animals. They live in groups called pods (一群), and they often join others from different pods to play games and have fun — just like people. Scientists believe playing together is something only intelligent animals do. Dolphins travel together in groups known as pods. 

Teamwork

Dolphins and humans are similar in another way: both species (种类) make plans for getting things they want. In the seas of southern Brazil, for example, dolphins use an intelligent strategy (策略) to get food. Dolphins sometimes help fishermen find food. When there are fish near a boat, dolphins signal (向……发信号) to the fishermen to put their nets in the water. Using this method, the men can catch a lot of fish. Why do dolphins assist (协助) the men? There is an advantage for them: they get to eat some of the fish that escape from the net. 

High school students have to decide something important about their future. Should they go to college after they finish high school? Or should they take a gap year (休学一) before they  to college?

A gap year is a break from school. It  students time to experience the world and find themselves. Some may decide to get jobs and make money. Some may take a trip and get relaxed. 

However, most decide to do things to help them grow. Many spend their time  others. They do volunteer work for the  or the old. Many also go abroad to learn other languages or  other cultures. 

For some, gap years are great. They are helpful for . They get out  their comfort zones (区域) and see new things. They learn new skills to help them become good speakers and leaders. 

Also, they learn about themselves. Some even get a clear idea of  future. They want to make that happen, when they go back to school, they work  hard, and they do better in their work. 

For others, gap years aren't great. They aren't very useful, and they can be very expensive. What's worse, they may forget they have learned in high school. Should you take a gap year? Only you can decide that.
