    My First Marathon(马拉松)

A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.

I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn't do either well. He later informed me that I was "not athletic".

The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!

The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.

Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!

At mile 3, I passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"

By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.

By mile 21, I was starving!

As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.

I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.

Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a "marathon winner".

(1)、A month before the marathon, the author ____.
A、was well trained B、felt scared C、made up his mind to run D、lost hope
(2)、Why did the author mention the P.E. class in his 7th year?
A、To acknowledge the support of his teacher. B、To amuse the readers with a funny story. C、To show he was not talented in sports. D、To share a precious memory.
(3)、How was the author's first marathon?
A、He made it. B、He quit halfway. C、He got the first prize. D、He walked to the end.
(4)、What does the story mainly tell us?
A、A man owes his success to his family support. B、A winner is one with a great effort of will. C、Failure is the mother of success. D、One is never too old to learn.

    T-shirts out; uniforms in

School uniforms are becoming more and more popular across the U.S.A. That's no surprise, because they offer many benefits. They immediately end the powerful social sorting and labeling that come from clothing. If all students are dressed in the same way, they will not pay too much attention to their clothing, and some of them will not be laughed at for wearing the "wrong" clothes.

Some people are against the strict rule of school uniforms, but they do not realize that students already accept a kind of rule — wanting to look just like their friends. The difference is that the clothing students choose for themselves creates social barriers; school uniforms tear those barriers down.

As in other places, uniforms remind the wearers of their purposes and duties. For example, when a man or woman puts on a police uniform, he or she becomes, for a time, the symbol of law and order. The uniform means to the wearer his or her special duties and sends the same message to everyone the wearer meets. People with different jobs wear uniforms of one kind or another. For students, the school uniform reminds them that their task for the six or seven hours they are in school is to get an education.

Some parents are unhappy about uniforms, saying that school uniforms will affect their children's "creativity." First, as noted above, the clothes students choose to wear do not necessarily express their individuality. They just copy their classmates. Second, students have the rest of the day to be as creative as they like. While they're in school, their job is to master reading, writing, and maths; this should take up all the creativity they have. Mastery of those skills will be good for the students to build up their creativity in every way.

(1)、In Paragraph 1, the word "benefits" probably means ____.
    A、tasks B、messages C、advantages D、differences
(2)、From the passage we learn that uniforms in general____.
A、help the wearers keep their duties in mind B、prevent the wearers from being laughed at C、are seen as a symbol of power D、help to create social barriers
(3)、Some people are against school uniforms because____.
A、they think that school uniforms are too popular B、they believe that uniforms will make students less creative C、they don't agree that uniforms can remove social barriers D、they fail to realize that students have accepted the uniforms
(4)、The author would probably agree that____.
A、it makes no difference whether to wear school uniforms or not B、students' individuality may not come from school education C、students' creativity is related to the clothes they choose D、school uniforms help to create equality among students

Did your mother ever say you'll feel better after a good cry? It turns out Mom is right as usual-crying really is healthy. What's more, letting yourself feel blue and accepting those feelings will help you feel better in the long run, according to a new research.

In three separate studies both online and in a lab, researchers at UC Berkeley evaluated the responses from 1,300 adults regarding their psychological(心理的)health and emotional well-being(幸福感).In one study,1,000 participants filled out a survey evaluating how they felt about the statement, "I tell myself I shouldn't be feeling the way that I'm feeling." Those who agreed with the statement scored lower on tests of well-being. In other words, letting yourself feel bad is better for your mind and mood than trying to control negative thoughts.

"We found that people who habitually accept their negative emotions experience fewer negative emotions, which adds to better psychological health," said study senior author Iris Mauss, PhD, an associate professor of psychology at UC Berkeley in an article on the university's website.

In a society where the importance to be happy is emphasized daily on the other social media platforms, letting yourself be down in the dumps can be tough. Just remember that true happiness isn't always what people say it is.

"It turns out that how we approach our own negative emotional reactions is really important for our well-being," said study lead author Brett Ford, PhD, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Toronto. "People who accept these emotions without judging or trying to change them are able to deal with their stress more successfully."

So next time someone tells you to "turn that frown upside down", ignore them. Embrace your inner feelings for a while.

(1)、How did the researchers carry out one of the studies?
A、They gave the participants different tests. B、They compared their own thoughts with others. C、They studied the participants' everyday experiences. D、They compared the participants' thoughts and their feelings.
(2)、What does the underlined part "be down in the dumps" in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A、Be lonely. B、Be depressed. C、Be positive. D、Be comfortable.
(3)、What did Brett Ford try to show in Paragraph 5?
A、It is better for people to accept negative emotions. B、We should never try to change others' thoughts. C、People who accept themselves are happier. D、Positive people tend to be less stressed.
(4)、What would be the best title for the text?
A、Turn your frown upside down B、Crying is good for our health C、Stop having bad feelings D、Stop feeling the way that you're feeling

  • 5. /strong>. 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

    Slash(斜杠)Careers

What is your job? Are you a teacher or a businessperson? Or maybe you are a lawyer/writer or a teacher/photographer.The term "slash career" comes from the punctuation mark(标识符)—a slash that comes between job titles.

People with slash careers often have a primary job that provides for most of their needs. The primary job usually comes before the slash. This secondary job can help supplement the person's income.

Why would anyone want more than one job? Some people look to their jobs for opportunities to develop their interests. But most people have too many interests for one job. Secondary jobs can be enjoyable if they include interests that the primary job doesn't touch. Some people who encourage slash careers say they actually help with work-life balance.

On the other hand, a slash career can be dangerous for work-life balance. One might give up necessary things like relaxation, exercise or time with one's family. People with slash careers need to think carefully about how they use their time. This includes knowing when to stop working.

The clear advantage to slash careers is the extra income that secondary jobs provide. It's always helpful to have a little extra money to spend or to save.

With a slash career, losing one's job does not mean losing one's entire income. Or a secondary job may be so successful that it can turn into one's primary job.

If your interests stretch beyond your ordinary job, a slash career may work for you.

    A. Slash careers provide extra money.

    B. Slash careers also make one's life more stable.

    C. Working more than one job can fill up all of your time.

    D. If you have more than one job, you have a slash career.

    E. It shows the person is creative and willing to work hard.

    F. The job after the slash is often based on a person's interests.

    G. That's because they can give people an opportunity to express themselves.

"I wish my mother had a ring like those the ladies wear at the hotel," said Hiram Green to himself one day. Hiram was the son of a fisherman, but the fisherman had died when Hiram was a little boy. Hiram's mother took on sewing work to earn money to support herself and her son. He helped her when he could re out of school hours, and during vacation time. He had two uncles who had taught him how to catch shrimps. With the money he earned by selling them he could buy things for his own use or pleasure. He had a "bank" almost full of what he called his "shrimp money."

The sight of the flashing diamonds on the hands of some of the summer visitors at the fishing village in which he lived had added a new article to the list of beautiful things his mother would own someday. He had heard that just one single diamond was sometimes worth five hundred dollars or more. This had discouraged him very much.

But one day, he happened to pass a shop in the neighboring town and saw a number of diamond rings displayed in the window. He stopped fascinated, and pressed his face against the glass eagerly to see if any prices were marked upon them. Imagine his surprise when he saw upon the largest one a tag marked $4.75. He looked again to see if he had made a mistake. Perhaps it was $475. But no, he knew enough about figures to see that he was right the first time.

He went home as fast as he could, and ran up into his bedroom. Then, he opened his "bank" and counted its contents. "Three dollars and twenty-two cents!" he cried. "I'll have that ring before another week." Hiram worked early and late for the next few days. He caught more shrimps than he had ever caught in the same length of time, and sold them readily.
