Nobody says school is easy. Studying is difficult, as is memorizing information for a test. Fortunately, there are books that can help you to make dealing with school easier.
Unlimited Memory by Kevin Horsley
This book is a bestseller in memory improvement. It has strategies to help learn faster and become more productive. Of course, having a good memory comes in handy outside of the classroom as well. Really, this is a great book for life in general.
On Course by Skip Downing
It is another book worth reading. In its eighth edition, the book provides self-assessment tools to help identify what is needed to change for academic success. It contains guided journal entries to help readers with responsibility, self-management, self-awareness, learning and self-esteem.
Student's Guide to Writing College Papers by Kate L. Turabian
Many students reach college and find that essay writing in college is very different from that in high school. Whether this is the case or not, Student's Guide to Writing College Papers is a perfect choice for those who want to improve writing skills. It's available on Kindle or in hardback or paperback forms. Right now, this one is its fourth edition. The book covers writing actual paper, citing sources, and style.
How to Become a Straight-A Student by Cal Newport
The book came out in 2006. It enjoys great popularity among learners all over the world. The grandpa quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, "Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water."
The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandpa laughed and said, "You'll have to move a little faster next time," and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned. Out of breath, he told his grandpa that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, so he went to get a bucket instead. The grandpa said, "I don't want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You're just not trying hard enough." The boy again dipped the basket into the river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandpa the basket was empty again. Out of breath, he said, "Grandpa, it's useless!"
"So, you think it is useless?" the grandpa said, "Look at the basket."

It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members.
Fragile (易碎的) items, like those made of glass are easily broken and should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of placing them on cupboards higher up. Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. When there is a strong movement, these pieces will fall on the floor directly and not on you.
There is a strong chance of short circuits (短路) and fire outbreaks during an earthquake. Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens.
During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged. Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you. Never use the elevator to go down. Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out. Use the staircases at all times.
If you are outdoors, do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place. Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object.
If trapped in debris (碎片), cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can find you. Use a whistle if one is available. Never shout for help. Shouting can cause you to breathe in dangerous dust. Do not light a match because you may burn yourself. Do not move about or kick up dust.
(1)、What does the underlined word "calamities" mean in the passage?A、Scenes. B、Disasters. C、Conditions. D、Sciences.(2)、During the earthquake, people are advised to ____.A、go out of the building at once B、drive to a safe place quickly C、take shelter under a tree D、turn off electricity and gas immediately(3)、What should people NOT do when they are trapped in debris?A、Tap on a pipe or wall for help. B、Cover their mouths with handkerchiefs. C、Light a match for warmth. D、Use a whistle for help.(4)、What's the passage mainly about?A、The damage caused by earthquakes. B、The rescue work after earthquakes. C、How to prevent earthquakes. D、What to do during earthquakes.4. 阅读理解Have you ever said to a friend "That rose's smell is really sweet!", only to find that your friend can't smell anything at all?
According to a study published in the journal PNAS in May, people have different abilities to recognize certain odors (气味) — and it's linked to different genes.
For the study, 300 people were placed among 150 jars with different odors. At a given time, they had to smell an odor and then rate the intensity (强度) and pleasantness of the odor on a scale from 1 (extremely weak/unpleasant) to 7 (extremely strong/pleasant). Before they left, the participants needed to leave a blood sample.
After comparing genes of the participants, researchers found all had different smelling abilities and that the differences between these abilities could be traced to certain genes.
According to The New York Times, human beings have nearly 400 genes that directly control receptors (器官) and influence the way these receptors become active.
"Odors ... turn on specific receptors, which then tells us if we're smelling a flower, how strong we find it, and whether we like it," said Casey Trimmer, a geneticist and the lead author of the study. "One small change in the gene for the receptor can change its shape and how well the odor fits, thereby changing the awareness of the odor."
Though genes play a decisive role in our ability to smell, other factors, including attention, past associations and expectations, are important as well. For example, if we love the smell of roses, we are drawn to their smell and pay special attention to it.
But what does our different abilities to sense odors mean?
"Smelling is the most important sense for the rest of the animal kingdom," said Trimmer. Although, unlike other animals, humans aren't any longer dependent on their sense of smell to find food or detect danger, smell is still a significant sense. There is also evidence that a reduced sense of smell is an early symptom of Alzheimer's disease.
(1)、What did the study find about smelling?A、Men and women have different smelling abilities. B、Differences between smelling abilities lie in genes. C、People's abilities to smell change over time. D、Human beings can tell 150 odors apart.(2)、What can we learn from Casey Trimmer's words?A、Our receptors won't work when we smell an unpleasant smell. B、People's preferences for smells can affect their health. C、Small changes in genes for smelling make a difference. D、The sense of smell is the most important human sense.(3)、Which might influence our smelling ability according to the text?A、Past experiences. B、The environment. C、Other senses. D、The cultural belief.(4)、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A、Man has a better sense of smell than animals. B、Man can use their sense of smell to detect danger. C、The loss of smelling causes many health problems. D、Poor smelling ability may be a signal of early disease.二、第一部分:阅读理解,第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)

It is necessary but difficult for English beginners to memorize new words, and long lists of words seem to make the mission impossible. They are puzzled why they try to memorize words with great efforts but forget them easily. That's why there are often inquiries about how to memorize new words. Here are some tips to help.
__We too often separate the process of new words memorization from pronunciation. In fact, these two can be combined and each will enhance the other. Saying the word to ourselves helps activate aural(hearing) memory, which helps the memory. The more familiar we are with the word, the greater chance we will have to keep it for the rest of our life.
Never memorize single English words. Relate the word to terms we already know, either as synonym or antonym. For example, the word "gargantuan" is similar in meaning to words "gigantic", "huge" and "large". Make a sequence of words: "small, medium, large, gigantic, and gargantuan".
Create a mental image of the word that involves strong emotions. Think, "The gargantuan whale is going to swallow me whole".
Learning English words requires action. Complaining how difficult it is to memorize new words will be of little help. Have a try with ten words a day and you will see what a difference you will make in our English learning.
A. So take action right now.
B. Speak the word while memorizing it.
C. Memorizing new words is very important.
D. Actually, some have given up learning new words.
E. In fact, learning new words needn't be that difficult.
F. Make as many associations and connections as possible.
G. The sound of word helps us recall the spelling and familiarizes us with the word.
