The Chinese-born American architect(建筑师) Ieoh Ming Pei is one of the most creative architects of our times. He has incorporated(混合) both eastern and western ideas into his designs.

Ieoh Ming Pei was born in Guangzhou, China on April 26, 1917. His father was a famous banker. In

1935, at the age of 17, he came to the United States to study architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1942, he entered the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In 1964, Jacqueline Kennedy chose Pei to design the Kennedy Library. After that he became well-known all over the world. People named it one of the best buildings in the United States. In 1968, Pei started working on the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art, in Washington D.C. Over one million people visited the building during its first 50 days in existence. Following the East Wing project Pei's fame has continued to grow widely. In 1983, French President commissioned(委任) Pei to help make the Louvre more modern. Ten years later, the completion of Pei's glass pyramid at the Louvre created a new historic landmark for Paris. Pei described it as "the greatest challenge and greatest achievement of my career". At Fragrant Hill, a 300-room hotel in the Chinese capital, Pei has tried to bring to his native China his often-quoted(被引用的) "third way of making buildings". Avoiding both an entire(完全的) copying of traditional Chinese features as well as the modernism of the West, Pei has managed, at Fragrant Hill, to make one of his most convincing statements.

Pei has designed nearly 50 projects in the United States and abroad. About half of these projects have won major prizes. Pei has been presented the highest honors from nations all over the world. In 1990, Pei was presented the Medal of Freedom by President George Bush for his contributions(贡献) to world peace and service to the US government.

If you have a chance to go to Finland(芬兰), you will probably be surprised to find how "foolish" the Finnish people are.

Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz(奔驰) with the money of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to do, and then walk off without paying. The driver would not show the least sign of being nervous and worried.

The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration card to the waiter. With such a relaxing check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to get the meals free.

The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the pay. From then on, they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly.

With so many mistakes in everyday life, surely Finland must be a place to those who love to take"petty advantages"(小便宜). But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have done their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest record of the exact hours they put in.

As you can see, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real "gentleman". In a society of such high moral(道德) practice, what need is there for people to be on guard against others?

(1)、We can learn from the second paragraph that____ in Finland.
A、all the taxis are very inexpensive and comfortable B、passengers only pay two US dollars for a taxi ride C、taxi drivers don't know the ways in city very well D、it's normal for passengers to pay for the drivers late
(2)、It can be inferred from the passage that ____ in Finland.
A、hotel guests often get meals free with their friends outside B、the bosses pay the workers according to their performance C、the workers are always honest with their working hours D、people are usually not so smart or careful in daily life
(3)、Which of the following best describes the author's opinion?
A、Morality is the golden chain of society. B、You can't judge a book by its cover. C、A friend in need is a friend indeed. D、Where there is a will, there is a way.

On a boat near Costa Rica, a team of marine biologists(海洋生物学家) is helping a turtle. The animal is having trouble breathing, and the team discovers why — there is something inside its nose. A scientist tries to extract the object, but the turtle cries in pain. Finally, after another eight minutes, a long object turns up and is seen clearly: it is a 10-centimeter plastic straw.

The video of the turtle's rescue(救援) has been viewed millions of times on YouTube. It has helped raise awareness of a growing problem: The world's seas are full of plastic. Since 2000, there has been a huge increase in worldwide plastic production, but we recycle less than one-fifth of it. A lot of this plastic waste ends up in the ocean. Today, scientists think about 8.1 billion kilograms goes into the sea every year from coastal regions. Most of this plastic will never biodegrade(生物降解), or they will take hundreds of years to biodegrade, which can be harmful to the environment.

This ocean plastic hurts millions of sea animals every year. Some fish eat plastic because it is covered with sea plants, and it looks and smells like food. Typically, eating plastic leads to constant hunger. "Imagine you ate lunch and then just felt weak .... and hungry all day.", says marine biologist Matthew Savoca. "That would be very confusing." In some cases, eating sharp pieces of plastic can seriously hurt sea animals and even result in death.

Plastic is useful to people because it is strong and lasts a long time — but this is bad news for sea creatures who eat or get stuck in it. In light of Savoca, "Single-use plastics are the worst." These are items that are used only once before we throw them away. Some common examples include straws, water bottles, and plastic bags. About 700 sea species (including the turtle from the video) have been caught in or have eaten this kind of plastic. Luckily, the turtle survived and was released back into the ocean.

How will plastic affect sea animals in the long term? "I think we'll know the answers in 5 to 10 years'time," says Debra Lee Magadini from Columbia University. But by then, another 25 million tons of plastic will already be in the ocean.

(1)、The underlined word "extract" means ____.
    A、ask for B、cut off C、pick out D、pull out
(2)、The second paragraph is mainly about ____.
A、how many people have watched the rescue B、how long people have used plastic products C、how much plastic waste is thrown into the sea D、how serious the plastic pollution is in the ocean
(3)、What can we infer from the passage?
A、The ocean plastic has the same taste as a sea plant. B、People living on the coast prefer to use single-use plastics. C、After eating plastic, sea animals would like to eat more food. D、Scientists know clearly about the influence of plastic pollution.
(4)、What could be the best title for this reading?
A、Dangers Facing Sea Turtles B、The Work of Marine Biologists C、The Problem of Plastic Production D、How Plastic Harms Sea Animals

Need to buy something? Why go to a store? Buy it on the Internet! Need it now? Why wait? Ask to receive it the next day! Each day, more and more people try on-line shopping. In fact, online sales have doubled in the last ten years. But not everyone is excited. Some scientists now say that online shopping is bad for the environment.

"People are surprised to hear this." They think, "I don't need to drive, and the business doesn't need to build a store, so there will be less pollution," says Nuria Prost, an environmental scientist. "But it is not so simple. In fact, online shopping is wasteful. It also adds to air pollution."

In truth, the Internet is not always as good a friend to the environment as it seems. For example, most people thought that the Internet would help offices use less paper and other materials. But paper use increased by 33 percent between 1986 and 1997. "Online shopping could have similarly harmful results,"says Nevil Cohen, a researcher of environmental science. Part of the problem is what people are buying these days. In the past, people bought things on the Internet that did not require much packing material, such as books and clothing. But now people also shop online for large, heavy products such as televisions, computers, chairs and tables. These products need to be packed in lots of plastic and paper. This creates a lot of waste.

Another problem caused by online shopping is air pollution. When customers buy products and ask to receive them the next day, online businesses often have to send them by air. Airplanes use much more oil than cars and produce more carbon dioxide*. When people buy a lot of different things from different online businesses, this creates even more travel by airplane.

Online product returns are also a problem. For example, an online shoe store may allow customers to return shoes for free if they are wrong size. This doubles the packing materials and number of airline trips required to sell one pair of shoes.

"If people want to protect the environment, they need to think before they shop," says Prost. "People need to ask themselves: Is this exactly what I want? Do I really need it tomorrow, or can I wait? Online stores can also ask customers to pay money for returns. This may make people shop more carefully. "Online shopping is fast and easy, "says Prost, "but we can't forget the harmful result it has caused to the environment. "

(1)、The passage begins with several questions to ____. .
A、introduce the main topic B、describe online shopping C、show the writer's opinion D、list advantages of shopping
(2)、What is the passage mainly about?
A、The Internet does harm to the environment. B、Online shopping causes more air pollution. C、Online shopping is not environmentally-friendly. D、Online shopping needs stopping to protect the environment.
(3)、Which of the following is to show that online shopping is wasteful?
A、Large products need more packing materials. B、Paper use increased by 33 percent about ten years. C、Businesses need to build a store to sell the products. D、Online shopping costs less than shopping in a store.
(4)、Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?(P=Paragraph)
    A、 B、 C、 D、

四、任务型阅读(10分)

  • 16.  下面文章中有5处需要添加内客。有一项是多余选项。

    A. Start them young.

    B. Rewrite the kids' menu.

    C. Be a role model and eat healthily yourself.

    D. Offer praise and attention instead of food treats.

    E. Let kids stop eating when they feel they've had enough.

    F. You decide which foods to buy and when to serve them.

It is important for parents to know how to help their kids eat healthily. Here are a few easy ways:

Though kids may keep asking for less nutritious(有营养的) foods, parents should decide which foods are regularly provided in the house. Kids won't go hungry. They'll eat what's available in the fridge at home.

Lots of parents grew up under the clean-plate rule, but that way doesn't help kids listen to their own bodies when they are full. When kids feel full, they're less likely to overeat.

Food preferences are developed early in life, so try to offer different kinds of foods. Likes and dislikes begin forming even when kids are babies. Parents may need to serve a new food on several different occasions for a child to accept it.

Food is not love. Find better ways to say "I love you". When foods are used to reward kids and show love, they may start to turn to food when feeling worried or unhappy.

When trying to teach good eating habits, try to set the best example. Choose nutritious foods, eat at the table, and don't forget breakfasts.
