Why Do the English Always Talk about the Weather?

It's nearly June and the people in London are still wearing the winter jackets! Don't you think the weather in London is so bad at the moment? But when the sun comes out in the late afternoon, it will be summer at this time of a day. When you go to England, you will (将要) see that some English people usually take an umbrella or a raincoat with them on a sunny morning, but you should not laugh at them. If you don't take an umbrella or a raincoat, you will regret later in the day.

So when you meet English people, they often talk about one thing, the weather. You can say, "Nice weather for the time of year!"

"But it was a little cold yesterday," somebody may answer.

"But it got a bit warmer later!" you can say.

Talk like this, and the English will think, how friendly you are! Talking about the weather can mean more than just trying to make a conversation with a stranger. The weather is everywhere and it affects everyone, so if you meet a stranger or if you are introduced to someone, it is the perfect way to start a conversation!

Peter is in London，the UK.  It's 5 o'clock in the afternoon.  He is watching TV in the living room.  At the same time, Bruno in Brazil is playing soccer with his friends in the park.  It's 2 o'clock in the afternoon there.  It's 8 o'clock in the morning in the US now.  Logan is having his breakfast.  His mother always makes soup for him.  Karima is in Paris, France.  It's 6 o'clock in the evening and Karima is not at home.  She is shopping with her mother in a supermarket.  There's a big sale.  They want to buy some bread.  Sanjiv is in India.  It's half past ten at night.  Sanjiv is brushing his teeth.  He usually goes to bed at 11 o'clock. 

Jennifer White is a school bus driver (司机).  This is a day of Jennifer. 

At 6:00 a. m.  Jennifer gets up and gets dressed.  She doesn't take a shower in the morning.  She only washes her face and brushes her teeth before breakfast.  At 6:40 she has breakfast with her family.  There are 4 people in her family—Jennifer, her husband and their two children. 

At 7:30 a. m.  Jennifer sends (送) her children to school.  Then she cleans the school bus.  She often finds some school things on the bus, such as pencils, books rulers and so on.  Jennifer thinks her work is not busy.  She has much time to do other things.  She likes it. 

At 5:00 p. m.  Jennifer gets home.  After dinner, she usually exercises at 7:30.  She either runs or takes a walk.  Jennifer usually goes to bed at 9:45 p. m. 

You can easily pick off a thorn (刺) in your body. But if the thorn is in your heart, how will you pick it off? The thorn can be your mistake or secret. 

Doctor Ralston once told me a true story. One day, a man came to Doctor Ralston with different kinds of trouble: He had a headache, and he couldn' t fall asleep at night. Doctor Ralston gave the man some careful exams. However, he found nothing wrong with the man. 

He said, "If you don' t tell me what' s worrying you, I can' t help you. "

The man said that he once cheated (欺骗) his friend. Then Doctor Ralston let the man write to his friend and say sorry to him. When the man put the letter into the post box, he suddenly cried, "Thank you. I think I get well. "

The man spoke out his mistake and he corrected it. He picked off the thorn in his heart. He cured (治愈) himself. 

I have been very busy since I became a volunteer for the Riding for the Disabled Association.  Every Saturday, I help to get the horsesfor the disabled (残疾) riders.  Many more disabled people want to ridethan you'd imagine.  It's a disadvantage that I don't know how to ride—I'd love to get on long rides with the riders—but I'll learn soon .  Right now, I'm just happy to be able to lead the horses around for the disabled riders. 

I'mhelping to organize a sale, which will benext month.  It's a lot more work than helping the disabled.  I need to collect second-hand things to sell at the sale.  There arethings available (获得的) than I thought, but I'm sure we'll have enough next month. 

I hope the sale raises more money than last month's work.  It was rainy, so too few people took part in the event.  Last week, we held an auction (拍卖).  The auction took much lessto organize than the work. , for some reason, peopletoo little money for the things, so we didn't raise enough money. 

A: Hi, Mary! Did you go to the concert last night ?

B: Yes.  Iwith my parents. 

A: did you like it ?

B: Wonderful.  Many famous singers sang at the concert.  It "Saving the Children ". 

A: What does it mean ?

B: The concert was held tofor poor children.  You know many children in the world don't have enough food. 

A: That's true. 

B: I think people all over the worldthem. 

A: That's right.
