The Best Hiking near New York City

If you want to go hiking near New York City, you're in luck. These trails (小径) can meet your needs.

    Yellow Trail at Mount Beacon

Consider this 2.5-mile trail if you don't have enough time. You can go on a quick but difficult hike there that sends you straight up the Mount Beacon. You can take in beautiful views similar to its more popular neighbors there. You can even watch the sunset. To get there, take Metro-North to Beacon and then take a 5-minute walk to the beginning of the trail.

    Stairway to Heaven Trail

The trail lies about 50 miles outside the city, but it allows you to get everything you ever wanted in a hike. You'll get good exercise if you choose the 7.3-mile "Stairway to Heaven". Take NJ Transit bus route 196 or 197 to Warwick, New York, and it's just a 10-minute taxi ride to the beginning of the trail.

    Camp Smith Trail

This 3.5-mile hike is great for a day trip by yourself. With fairly easy landform (地形), even your four-legged friend can join you on the trail. Take the Metro-North Hudson line to Peekskill Station for free buses or trains to the Bear Mountain Inn. And you can hike up to see unbelievable Hudson Valley view.

Ice Caves and Verkeerderkill Falls Trail

Along the 7-mile trail, you will get through the passages of the Ice Caves and walk past Verkeerderkill Falls. The trail is the highest waterfall trail in the Shawangunks. Take the Short Line bus from New York to nearby Ellenville and then take a 14-minute taxi ride to Sam's Point Preserve.

Amy Jandrisevits knows the value of a good doll. "Dolls have a power we don't completely understand," she says. It's a conclusion she came to while working as a pediatric oncology (儿科肿瘤) social worker using dolls to help her young patients adapt to their changing medical situations. Many of the kids saw themselves in those good dolls. But for the kids who had lost their legs or hair, there were none they could relate to.

So, eight years ago, when a friend said that her child was disabled, Jandrisevits knew what might help the youth through the challenging period. "It's hard to tell a kid, 'You are perfect the way you are,' and it is important to build the kids' self-confidence," she says.

Jandrisevits went about changing that. She made a doll by hand, which looked like her friend's child and sent it off. After the friend posted a photo of the happy child and doll on-line, another woman asked Jandrisevits to make a doll that looked like her baby, who had lost a leg.

Word spread, and soon Jandrisevits made dolls for children with different physical defects (缺陷)—in short, dolls that looked like them. She quit her job and started a nonprofit, A Doll Like Me. Working out of her home in Milwaukee, based on photos sent by kids' parents or caregivers, Jandrisevits takes about seven hours to make each doll. A GoFundMe page helps her make up for costs and allows her to donate her services. She hasn't charged for a doll since she began her nonprofit.

In all, she has made more than 400 dolls. The waiting list is long, but Jandrisevits is undefeated. As she explains on her GoFundMe page, "Every kid, regardless of age or body type, should look into the sweet face of a doll and see their own."

Some people are using old books to create works of art, including sculptures. They can change the shape of a hardcover book so it becomes 3D. The resulting sculpture has not only a length and width, but depth. The process can be very simple, and the result is often beautiful.

There are many kinds of book folding. Artists fold, bend, and sometimes, cut a book's pages while keeping them together. The art works can be hung on a wall or placed on a table. "They look impressive on the wall," says writer Candice Caldwell. "A group of six of these on the wall together can look really beautiful, and they're just really simple folds."

In 2003, Caldwell started making clocks from old books when she saw plans for a simple book-folding project in a do-it-yourself magazine. She has since taught several friends and her mother how to create wall from books.

Caldwell operates a blog. She writes about reshaping everyday objects like books for uses other than what they were designed for.

Clare Grey has written a book called Folded Book Art. He says book folding is easy. From his home in England, he told the Associated Press by email that "it looks as if it is complex and unachievable, but it is really easy to do. You just don't tell anyone how easy it is and they will be amazed at your creations.

Grey began making art from book pages several years when he saw pictures of folded books at the website Pinterest. com. He also watched some videos on YouTube that tell how to create art from books.

Grey suggests folding cooking recipe and photography books. He says that "If it's really visual and really colorful when you start to fold them, you get a whole new look on the wall."

(1)、What does Caldwell write about online?
A、Creating everyday objects. B、The works of art on the wall. C、A project in a do-it-yourself magazine. D、Changing the shape of daily items for other purposes.
(2)、What does Grey think of book folding?
A、It is not complex B、It is hard. C、It is not attractive. D、It is boring.
(3)、Where did Grey learn to make art from book pages?
A、In the library. B、From friends. C、On the Internet. D、From cooking recipes.
(4)、What is the best title for the text?
A、Recycle Old Things B、The Goal of Book Folding C、Ways to Fold Various Book D、A New Use for Old Books

三、任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

  • 14.  阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

As an artist who shares her journey on social media, I'm often asked by curious followers how to begin an art journey. Unfortunately, there is no magic list I can offer. I do remember, though, what it was like to be a complete beginner. So I've put together some good tips for starting an art journey.

●Start small. I suggest using a sketchbook (素描本) for small studies. These small studies provide inspiration and may be a springboard for more complex works in the future. You'll want to look back on your journey to see how far you've come.

●Paint often and paint from life. There's no better way to improve than to put in those brush miles. Whether you paint still lifes, portraits, or landscapes, paint from life as much as possible.

●Continually challenge yourself to try something new. Artistic growth can be a bit painful. Welcome to the club;we've all been there. I love taking on challenges. I once took up a challenge to create a painting every day for a month and post the works online.

Seeking and accepting constructive feedback (反馈) is crucial to growth. I post my work on social media and, in turn, have met some of the kindest people. They make me feel valued and respected, no matter my level of artistic ability.

The journey you're on won't follow a straight path. Push through, give it time and put in the effort. You will harvest the rewards of an artistic life.

AGet out of your comfort zone.

BMake career plans and set goals.

CDon't throw away your beginner art.

DShare your work if you feel comfortable doing so.

EYou'll hit roadblocks, and you'll feel discouraged at times.

FEvaluate your performance and, if needed, redefine your role.

GYou'll develop that painting muscle memory that only comes with repetition.
