There are four fun festivals throughout the year in Brazil. 

Festa Junina

Festa Junina is celebrated all over Brazil for the entire month of June as a yearly celebration of Saint John. It celebrates country life with typical clothes, food and dances inside a large tent, with decorations such as colored flags, beautiful table cloths and balloons. 

Oktoberfest

The Germanic roots of the south of Brazil brought this traditional German festival to Brazil, where it has become one of the most popular beer festivals. Held in the middle of October every year in Blumenau, it celebrates typical German cuisine and plenty of beer. There're all kinds of German foods at the festival.

Festival de Cachaça

Every year in the town of Paraty, Festival de Cachaça is held for cachaça, the national alcohol made from sugarcane (甘蔗). This festival is held over a long weekend in August and it gives you a chance to try cachaça. There are also shows of samba (桑巴舞) and food trucks. It's also a great opportunity to get to know the beautiful town of Paraty.

Parintins Folklore Festival

The festival held every year in Parintins is the second largest in Brazil after the carnival. It goes over a period of three days at the end of June and celebrates the Amazonian legend of a resurrected ox (复活的牛). The main attraction of the festival is the competition between the two teams Garantido and Caprichoso that compete to retell the story of the ox through a mix of dancing and singing. 

There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have lots of friends at school. However, he wasn't sure whether or not his classmates were his true friends, so he asked his grandpa. The old man answered, "I have just exactly what you need; it's in the attic (阁楼). Wait here for a minute. "

Grandpa left, soon returning as though carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there. "Take it. It's a very special chair. Because it's invisible (无形的) it's rather difficult to sit on, but if you take it to school and you manage to sit on it, you'll be able to tell who your true friends are. "

Mario took the strange invisible chair and went to school. At break time he asked everyone to form a circle, and he put himself in the middle, with his chair. "Nobody move. You're about to see something amazing," Mario said.

Then Mario tried sitting on the chair. He missed and fell straight onto

his backside. Everyone had a pretty good laugh. Mario wouldn't be beaten. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair, and kept falling to the ground. . . until, suddenly, he tried again and didn't fall. This time he sat, hovering (悬停) in mid-air. 

Looking around, Mario saw George, Lucas, and Diana — three of his best friends — holding him up, so he wouldn't fall. At the same time, many others he had thought of as friends were doing nothing but make fun of him, enjoying each and every fall. 

Leaving with his three friends, Mario explained to them how his grandpa had so cleverly thought of such a good idea. Now he knows that those who take joy in our misfortunes (不幸) when we are in difficulty are not our true friends. 

When you play video games, what types of games do you play? Do you enjoy creative, imaginative games like Minecraft? Or are sports or racing games more your style? 

Another popular kind of video game is the role-playing game (RPG). Although RPGs may combine many elements from other types of games, the key aspect of an RPG is that, as a player, you assume the role of a specific character. Whether you're in a fantasy, historical or modern-day setting, you interact with the game's imaginary world as if you were the character you play.

Fascinating as modern role-playing video games are, they all have a very low-technology origin: the pen and paper tabletop (桌面) game Dungeons and Dragons (D&D). Created by Dave Arneson and Gary Gygax in 1974, D&D was the first RPG. Even though it wasn't electronic, it had all the characteristics that RPGs have become known for: interesting characters, classes, abilities, races, and experience points. D&D players used pencils, paper, books and dice (骰子). They used their imagination to create attractive storylines (故事情节) and, perhaps most importantly, had a lot of real, face-to-face social interaction with their friends. D&D set the stage for all the RPGs that would follow. Now, high-tech RPGs have become the choice of most young people. However, D&D is still played today by many despite the prevalence of the high-tech video games.

Players of RPGs usually focus on how much fun they have playing the game. However, besides all that fun, they are also learning a variety of skills that will help them in school and their future careers. RPGs require a lot of reading, so they definitely help improve reading skills. Developing imaginative storylines for characters requires a high level of creativity. As players develop their storytelling skills, they also learn how to think critically and solve problems as part of a team. Face-to-face interaction with friends also improves social skills. 

Have you ever been on an airplane, minding your own business, and found your eyes filled with tears for no reason? Or perhaps you sat near someone who burst into tears. Is there something happening to your body that triggers (引发) the tears?

There sure is! When you're inside a flying airplane, you're miles off the ground. Not exactly a place where humans usually find themselves. The airplane is pressurized (加压) to keep passengers comfortable. But it's still not the pressure levels that you'll experience at ground level. It's a bit like having climbed a pretty high mountain.

The primary tear-trigger is the lower amount of oxygen in your blood. The oxygen levels in the plane are lower than you'll find on the ground. And it can bring you bad feelings.

Another cause is dehydration(脱水). Because the air in the plane is very dry, we may get dehydrated. And being dehydrated can have all kinds of harmful effects on your 30,000-foot-high body, which is making you have bad feelings like sadness and worry. In fact, there is a spiritual reason, too! Even if you're not afraid of planes, it's a high-stress situation. Taking a flight often involves saying goodbye to someone in the place you're leaving. You can also be worried about plane crash or losing your baggage.

You can drink plenty of water before your flight to fight back your tears. You can also keep your mind busy with a puzzle or brain game. And if you're going to watch a movie, maybe choose one that's a bit more relaxing. In short, make flying a more pleasant and less stressful experience.

Green architecture is designed in an environmentally-friendly way. Many people think interest in green architecture has only begun in recent years.   Our ancient ancestors were intelligent. They also knew the fact that green architecture is more able to fit in with nature and more practical. 

These include heating and cooling, water usage, environmental quality and energy usage. Architects can deal with all of these in various ways, all of which are designed to increase efficiency without affecting the function of the building. 

To make it, much of green architecture focuses on building intelligently. For example, plumbing systems (管道系统) may be designed to use less water while still functioning normally.       

Many architects build environmentally to show people that it's possible. And they want to show the fact that being environmentally-friendly does not have to make a building bad-looking. A courtyard with plants, for example, can be nicer to view.

The green design can be kept in mind when we build various future buildings, ranging from a private home to a tall office building. Green designs can also be applied to remodeling (改造) and repairing existing buildings. Many governments are thus encouraging remodeling and repairing instead of building new ones.

Joe Simpson and Simon Yates were the first people to climb the West Face of the Siula Grande in the Andes mountains. They reached the top successfully, but on their way back conditions were very 1 . Joe fell and broke his leg. They both knew that if Simon continued alone, he would probably get back 2 . But Simon decided to risk his 3  and try to lower Joe down the mountain on a rope（绳）.

Woman:Richard, are you familiar with the story of Robinson Crusoe?

Man:Of course, it's a very famous story of survival.

Woman:So  do you think helps Crusoe get through a hard life on a small island for 28years?

Man:Well, the way I see it, one important thing for his survival is his (calm) in the face of the difficult situation. (have) himself alone on an island, he doesn't lose his head, but gets his necessary things ,such as guns, tools and food from the ship, before it (destroy) by a storm.

Woman:I can't agree more. And (person), I think he is also very wise. Just as you mentioned, with his gun and the rice, he can hunt and grow his own food.

Man:Yes. I am also amazed by how knowledgeable he is. He can make fire by rubbing pieces of wood together. What's your take on this?

Woman:I think so, too. And what about when he makes tools, such as spades out of wood and cups out of clay? Without those things, he would have had a much  (hard) time there!

Man:That's true. I'm quite impressed when he takes 18 whole days to widen and (deep) his cave with simple tools made of wood. And what surprises me more is when the cave is ruined by a sudden fall of earth, he doesn't feel depressed, but quickly redoes the work.

Woman:Yes, I see what you're getting at. And I believe that also reveals his positive attitude. That's quite inspiring.

When I was in the fifth grade, my parents and I moved abroad. One day, when reading the newspaper, I learned my hometown had just gone through a big natural disaster. And my hometown couldn't get enough new school supplies for kids. I wondered how the kids were going to school if they didn't have basic things like desks and books.

That same year, my school received new desks. The hundreds of old ones, which were still in good condition, were put into storage (贮存). And I learned there was little chance that the old desks would be used by my school again. I thought it was a waste. If my school really didn't need the desks, could I send them to the kids in my hometown? When I told my parents about the old desks at my school and what I thought could be done with them, they loved the idea.

Then, we asked a leader of my school if the school could have the desks donated to my hometown. She said she needed to get some other people's agreement. One day later, she gave us the answer. It was "yes"! But she wasn't sure whether we were able to move the desks to such a far place. Desks are very heavy and it would cost a lot to ship them.

But my parents and I wouldn't give up. We began e-mailing organizations that worked for children's rights, asking for their help. My parents' friends also helped us by e-mailing shipping companies, hoping they'd agree to ship the desks to my hometown.

Eventually, our efforts paid off. With the help of some organizations, a shipping company promised to ship the desks to my hometown through one of their big containers. And they'd let us use their trucks to transport the desks to the container. But we needed to load (装上) the desks onto the trucks and then carry the desks from the trucks to the container ourselves.
