I was in the classrooms, but I wasn't there to learn to write, read or even speak. When it was my turn to read, I wanted to hide. I was 13 years old, but I already hated being who I was.
I had an English teacher, Mr. Creech, who knew I couldn't read. In one of my first lessons the teacher said that anyone who had a reading age below six had to stand up. I felt so embarrassed. But at the same time, it made me realize that I needed to change the situation. I was determined that it wouldn't happen again. Later that day, Mr. Creech encouraged me and promised he would try his best to help me learn to read. From then on, I never gave up practicing reading.
Now I was 41 years old. One day, I planned to fly back to Texas to visit my friends and family. On my way from the airport, I saw Mr. Creech buying himself a drink. I rushed over and reached into my pocket to pay for him. "Do I know you? "he asked. "Yes, sir, you do know me, "I answered excitedly. "My name is Anthony Hamilton. You taught me English. "The look on his face told me that he remembered the boy he'd once encouraged.
"I'm so glad I had a chance to see you, "I said. "And Mr. Creech, I have great news to share, "I told him I had learned to read. But that wasn't all. I had become a published author and an active speaker. "The next time you get another Anthony Hamilton in your classroom, please encourage him to read as well, "I added.
The experts say what once worried me has a name: dyslexia. But I can tell you it was a lack of desire for education.

D、Friendly and hardworking.(2)、Why couldn't the author read before meeting Mr. Creech?A、Because his reading age was not long enough. B、Because his parents didn't teach him how to read. D、The author was grateful to Mr. Creech.(4)、The underlined word " dyslexia " in the last paragraph probably means .A、发音障碍 B、学习恐惧症 C、诵读困难症 D、教育恐惧症3. 阅读理解Kind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children defenseless against failure. The generation born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores and performance were played down because "everyone's a winner. "And their report cards sounded more positive (正面的) than ever before. As a result, Stanford University professor Carol Dweck, PhD, calls them"the overpraised generation. "
Dweck has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 years. Her research has led her to find out two clearly different mind-sets that have a great effect on how we react to it. Here's how they work:
A fixed mind-set is grounded in the belief that talent is genetic-you're a born artist, point guard, or numbers person. The fixed mind-set believes it's sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shame. When things get difficult, ifs quick to blame, lie, and even stay away from future difficulties.
On the other hand, a growth mind-set believes that no talent is entirely heaven-sent and that effort and learning make everything possible. Because the ego (自尊) isn't on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shame. When faced with a difficulty, ifs quick to rethink, change and try again. In fact, it enjoys this experience.
We are all born with growth mind-sets. (Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to live in the world.) But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mind-sets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praise. Dweck's book, Mind-set: The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional program explain this in depth. But she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure.
(1)、What does the author think about the generation born between 1980 and 2001?A、They don't do well at school. B、They are often misunderstood. C、They are eager to win in sports. D、They are given too much praise.(2)、A fixed mind-set person is probably one who .A、doesn't want to work hard B、cares a lot about personal safety C、cannot share his ideas with others D、can succeed with the help of teachers(3)、What does the growth mind-set believe?A、Admitting failure is shameful. B、Talent comes with one's birth. C、Scores should be highly valued. D、Getting over difficulties is enjoyable.(4)、What should parents do for their children based on Dweck's study?A、Encourage them to learn from failures. B、Prevent them from making mistakes. C、Guide them in doing little things. D、Help them grow with praise.4. 阅读理解After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together.
Together, these deep human urges(驱策力)count for much more that ambition. Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, "Why? Why? Why? "
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don't have to be learned. We are born with them and need only recapture them.
"The great man, " said Mencius(孟子), "is he who does not lose his child's heart." Yet most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires restful average. It encourages us to occupy our own little corner, to avoid foolish leaps into the dark, to be satisfied.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them, we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.
How should you start? Modestly, so as not to become discouraged. I think of one friend who couldn't arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it. How she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement.
One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven't any special ability? Most people don't; there are only a few geniuses. You haven't any time? That's good because it's always the people with no time who get things done. Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom's Cabin while cooking. You're too old? Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.
However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, for you'll never be more alive than you are at this moment.
(1)、In writing Paragraph 1, the author aims to .A、propose a definition B、make a comparison C、reach a conclusion D、present an argument(2)、What does the example of Galileo tell us?A、Trial and error leads to the finding of truth. B、Scientists tend to be curious and ambitious. C、Creativity results from challenging authority. D、Greatness comes from a lasting desire to explore.(3)、What can you do to recapture curiosity and discontent?A、Observe the unknown around you. B、Develop a questioning mind. C、Lead a life of adventure. D、Follow the fashion.(4)、What can we learn from Paragraphs 6 and 7?A、Gaining success helps you become an expert. B、The genius tends to get things done creatively. C、Lack of talent and time is no reason for taking no action. D、You should remain modest when approaching perfection.二、任务型阅读(共1小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
