After twenty one years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. That was my mother, who has been a widow for nineteen years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally.

That Friday after work, when I arrived at her house, my mother waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary.

We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady.

During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation, nothing extraordinary but catching up on recent events of each other's life. We talked so much that we missed the movie.

As we arrived at her house later, she said, "I'll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you." I agreed.

A few days later, my mother died of a massive heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn't have a chance to do anything for her.

Some time later, I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt. An attached note said: "I paid this bill in advance. I wasn't sure that I could be there; but, nevertheless, I paid for two plates — one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you, son."

At that moment, I understood the importance of saying in time: ‘I Love YOU' and to give our loved ones the time that they deserve.

Nothing in life is more important than your family. Give them the time they deserve, because these things cannot be put off till some "other" time.

If you watched the 2018 Winter Olympics, then you might have noticed the suits that the athletes wore. Have you ever wondered why they look so unique? Besides making the athletes look stylish, the suits can also help them move faster. This is especially true for speed skaters.

Wave your hand around in the air. You might feel some air moving around your hand, but you probably don't think that it can slow your hand down. But if you wave your hand around in some water, you can feel that it is not easy to move your hand. This is called drag (阻力). Air has less drag than water, but it can affect your speed.

Speed skaters wear suits that reduce drag. The suit makes the surface of their body smooth. This way, the air moves more easily over their body and there is less drag.

The US speed skating team's suits were made out of a white nylon-spandex (尼龙氨纶) mix called H1. When we move, we leave a vacuum (真空) hole of air behind us that can slow us down. Speed skaters need to make it as small as possible. The H1 fabric (织物) can help with this. The fabric makes the airflow behind moving objects more steady and therefore makes the hole smaller, Wired magazine reported.

The H1 fabric was used for the arms and legs of the team's suits. That's because human arms and legs move more and feel more drag.

Wearing high-tech suits might not decide the final victor in a competition. But the suits give athletes the best tool to do their job.

How to make friends at a new school

Starting with a new school can be difficult. Everything seems to be different, and you don't even know where to go for your own classes. Making new friends can be hard, too.

Be yourself

 If some people don't accept you, they're not the kind of friends you need. People often stay together because they have similar interests. For example, someone who does a lot of sports may make friends with those who also run or swim a lot.

Remember to be nice to the people you meet at your new school. If you think that you will say something that may make them feel sad, do not say anything and just nod your head if they talk to you. Also, remember to be as helpful as possible!

Believe in yourself

A smile goes a long way. When you walk in the halls, don't keep your eyes on the floor. Raise your head and make eye contact with other people. Introduce yourself. Tell them your name and where you're from.

Remember people's names

You like it when people use your name, and so do other people. People may become angry if you just begin by saying "Hey" each time. Besides, ask them in a kind way if they have a nickname (绰号) .

A. Be friendly to others.

B. Join in after-school activities you like.

C. Never change who you are in order to fit in.

D. If you see someone you know, smile or say "Hi".

E. You'd be surprised how often this might be useful.

F. Don't sit at the back of the classroom where other people cannot notice you.

G. However, if you use these skills, you can quickly turn some of those strangers into friends.

Growing up, I was a greedy reader but never a big fan of novels. My classmates would be  1about the latest Harry Potter book, while my copy sat 2dust on a shelf. I saw those kinds of books as a waste of time. "Why read a 3story when I could read a book that 4teaches me something?" I reasoned.

My parents had a bookcase full of novels, so I 5myself, "Why not try fiction?"

What surprised me the most was how much I 6. Some of the best books I read were historical fiction. I learned about life in Afghanistan and Ghana, as well as struggles people there faced during 7periods in those countries'8.

Beyond those9, I've discovered that reading fiction is good for my 10health. Life is burdening and it's often difficult to distance yourself from work. But when I'm 11in a good book, I can temporarily escape from the real world and 12a different world. It's a very 13 way to gain distance from stress so that I can14myself and regain energy for my work.

So, give fiction a try. You'll be 15how much it brings to your life.

Danger is not what we expect. But the truth is that it often comes suddenly and unexpectedly. How can we get out of danger? There are many answers to this question. The key is whether we can face danger (brave).

 What you must remember is that you must believe in (you). Just remember that it is you  can defeat any danger. Tell yourself that you can turn into a superwoman or a superman when you are in danger. This is why I am going to tell you the (story) of Mrs. Weldon and Dr. Murray.

 Mrs. Weldon reported that her baby was about to be knocked down by car when she was trying to save her baby. Mrs. Weldon (weigh) only forty kilograms. She looked as if she was a very weak lady often (dress) in skirts, but she said she pushed the car (save) her baby. Dr. Murray, a zoologist, wrote that he,  whom some wolves ran, jumped nearly three meters high into the air to take hold of the (low) branch of a tree. Perhaps you are wondering if you can do such things as they did. You can also be lucky to escape any injury!

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.

The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?"

"Oh, yes…but I don't have money on me," she replied.

"That's nothing. I'll treat you today," said the man. "Come in."

The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.

"What is it?" asked the man kindly.

"Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny. "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!"

Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?"

Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered Mother's familiar face and weathered hands. "Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me."

On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.
