On March 16, 2018, eight-year-old Tanitoluwa "Tani" Adewumi, beat 73 young competitors to win the New York State Chess Championship in his age category—kindergarten to third grade. While the achievement is great in itself, what makes it even greater is that the youngster, who was homeless at the time, began learning the game less than a year ago.

Tani and his family arrived in New York City from Nigeria in 2017, seeking religious protection. A church pastor (牧师)helped find the family of four space in a homeless shelter and soon after, Tani entered the local elementary school. It was here that the young talent was first introduced to the basics of chess by a part-time teacher. Attracted by the game, the then seven-year-old begged his mother, Oluwatoyin, to allow him to join the school's chess club. Concerned the family would be unable to afford the fees and expenses, which add up to thousands of dollars, Oluwatoyin emailed Russel Makofsky, who ran the club. To her surprise and delight, Makofsky agreed to waive all costs for young Tani. The rest, as they say, is history. The young boy, who has got seven prizes in less than a year, currently ranks 27 in America in his age category. 

Though the chess club certainly helps, it is Tani's devotion to the game that is largely responsible for his great success. Not surprisingly, Tani's incredible story, first reported by The New York Times, has resulted in an outpouring of support from the American public. It has raised $200, 000 in just ten days, far more than the original goal of $50, 000, and the funds keep coming.

Since they now have a home, the Adewumis have decided to "pay it forward" and donate the over $200, 000 collected on GoFundMe. They plan to give 10 percent of the funds raised to the church that has supported them. The rest will be placed in the newly-created Tanitoluwa Adewumi Trust and given to African immigrants to America who are struggling the way the family was.

Smile, please. You're on camera. This is not a joke. It seems that there are now more cameras than human beings in your community. I used to be annoyed when my children came into the toilet when I was using it. Now I worry about them coming in with camera phones. The last time it happened, I shouted, "I hope you're not filming this for You Tube." They replied, "Of course not, that's not so last month."

Escaping to a bar, I complained about this camera-filled world and many listeners shared their stories.

A Londoner told me about a woman in England who threw a cat in the street. When the surveillance(监视) video went public, she received so many death threats that she needed police protection. It seems that, if you cause an animal some pain, the population rises up to beat you to death.

A man from New York told a story of how a truck had knocked a tree down. A 23-year-old woman was hurt in the accident. However, a surveillance camera revealed that she had thrown herself down on purpose to get money from the driver. "You have to admit, the camera was the hero in that story," the New Yorker said.

Of course, there are disadvantages, too, the Londoner added, explaining that the UK now had about four million surveillance cameras. "I feel like cameras are looking at me all the time." he said. 

However, my attitude really changed after someone suggested: "If you had a large body of filmed work, why not register(登记) as an actor?" So I phoned a friend and got to know that all film or video actors with speaking parts could earn at least $782 per day.

Woohoo! Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go and do some "stupid dad tricks" at home.

It was the beginning of another school year. I had agreed to teach all students who had difficulty in studying. I knew what lay ahead—hard work hours and lesson plans with best practice strategies(策略). No wonder people always say to me, "I'm glad it's you and not me." when talking about my teaching career.

Suddenly, I remembered my first few years of teaching.

"Peter Potter," I called from my name list, trying to control my laughter. "Laughlin McLaughlin?" Surely these were not real names.

But then there were—and are—stories of success— of Dustin, in Graduate School for Electrical and Computer Engineering; of Michael, now a teacher in a city school; of Wilie…I thought of the thousands of students whose lives have ever touched mine far more than I could ever touched theirs.

I broke from my daydream, a smile appearing on my face. Sadness, tears, difficulties, fears—yes, teaching is filled with all of these—yet, it is also filled with laughter and smiles, hope, dreams, and rewards beyond measure.

If something that you're doing doesn't challenge you, then it doesn't change you. We all need some normal stress in our lives, after all.  So challenge the following limits:

Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people.

Don't just limit yourself to your fellow travelers—try to connect with the service staff.

You never know what kind of people they're going to be. Get out of your house or go online right now to book your class.

I had the pleasure and honor of serving as Newport Beach ocean lifeguard(救生员)for five years. One day, I was working at Tower 15. Two blocks to my right was another 1 named Mike, who was working at Tower 17. He called me over the phone and said, "I have noticed a couple of kids. I am going to give them a 2. Keep an eye on us."

I said. "Sure." And he 3.

It is obvious that the various festivals are times of (happy), fun and excitement, not of sadness. They have many origins.

Some are (religion) and some are seasonal. Easter is an important festival for Christians all over the world. People are thankful because their food

  (gather) for the winter and the agricultural work is over. Some festivals are held (honor) or satisfy and please the dead. In Japan a festival is called Obon. They have lamps on and play music they think this will help the dead back to Earth. The Dragon Boat Festival honors the famous ancient

(poem), Qu Yuan. Columbus Day is in memory the arrival of Columbus in the New World. India honors Mohandas Gandhi who helped gain India's independence from Britain. And most energetic and important festivals are the ones that look forward to the end of winter and to the (come) of spring, such as the Lunar New Year, on which people get together to eat, drink and have fun with each other.

No matter what the reason is, festivals are always times for great feasts with lots to eat, special and often new clothing to wear and (general) lots of fun.

A farmer grew some vegetables in his garden. One day his wife was ill and he had no money. He had to sell some cabbages and carrots in the market. The next morning he took two baskets of vegetables to town. But it was raining hard that afternoon and there were few people in the street. When his vegetables were sold out, it was dark. He bought some medicine and hurried to his village.

On his way home he saw a person lying on the snow. He placed his baskets on the ground and was going to help the person to get up. At that time he found it was a dead man and there was much blood on his body. He was so afraid that he ran away quickly, without taking the baskets with him.

The next afternoon the farmer was sent to the police station. Having shown the baskets, an officer asked, "Are these yours?" "Yes, sir. " the farmer answered timidly (胆怯地). "Have you killed the man?" "No, no, sir." the farmer said in a hurry. "When did you see the dead man?" "About seven last evening." "Did you see who killed the man?" "No, sir." The officer brought out a knife and asked, "Have you seen it yet?" "No, sir." The officer became angry and told the policemen to beat him up and sent him into prison. The officer wanted to trap the farmer into the confession(供认), but the farmer didn't admit he was the murderer.

The farmer was very afraid; he thought he would be sentenced to death by killing people, but ……

A year ago, I paid no attention to English idioms, though my teacher emphasized the importance again and again. But soon, the importance of English idioms was shown in an amusing experience.

One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be astonished, gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, saying, "You don't say! " "You don't say!" I was puzzled.
