As a teenager, I got angry quite easily and was not good at communicating with others.

I still remember it was 1 early autumn. Some leaves started to turn yellow and the weather became cool. One day, as I was getting ready for school, my mother 2 handed me my father's vest (背心) instead of mine. At that time, I was getting to have a 3 size than my father, so when I put on the vest, I felt as if I was 4 to breathe! I realized that it was a small mistake which 5 by my mother, but somehow the breathless feeling was so strong that it made 6 very angry. My mother said sorry with a smile, but I shouted at her without thinking much, I took it 7 so wildly that I made a hole in it. I put on my own vest 8 rushed out of the house before my mother could 9 me.

Later, my mother 10 her bad feelings with my father, "See what your son has done.” Instead of11 he would scold (责骂) or beat me, my father quietly asked my mother to mend the vest.

Later 12 my mother told me about my father's response, I felt ashamed(惭愧的) of my bad behaviour. My father's gentle13 taught me a lesson which I would never forget.

On that day, I decided not 14 anger control me any longer. Of course, there are times when I am angry. However, whenever that happens, I will try to remember my fathers' vest. It always15 me to think about others' feelings when I get angry.

Last Sunday, Mark invited me to help serve dinner at Tent City. A number of  1 had been set up for the homeless in the area.

My husband was not available to look after our two sons, so I took 9-year-old Tony and 5-year-old Toby with me. Many of the people we2 had missing teeth or wore dirty clothes. My sons had a lot of questions as what they saw challenged their 3 ideas about how people lived in the world.

"Why don't they buy food like us?" "Why don't they have homes?"…

We talked about the 4 why people ended up in that type of situation. And I mentioned the importance of creating a safety net for them, " Sometimes the safety net is other people who can share some of their time and resources（资源）," I 5.

I was  worried that my boys would make too much noise. But to my 6, the people we served were quite thankful that I had brought them. Many said how fun it was to have 7 children around.

After dinner, I saw Tony sit together with several elderly men. He was 8 them talk about sports. To be honest, I had never realized that he was such a good listener.  As some people returned to their tents, I heard Tony say to them, "Thanks so much for having dinner with us." I could see that his simple words had 9 them greatly. I hugged him a little tighter（更紧的）because what he said had touched me too. It was a great reminder that treating people with    10 can lift all of us up.

    I had the meanest (最刻薄的) mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal (谷类食物) and eggs. When others had Coke and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. But at least I wasn't alone. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.

    My mother knew where we were at all times. She knew who our friends were.

    We had to wear clean clothes and take a bath every day. The other kids got to wear the same clothes days.

    We had to be in bed by 9:00 pm and up at 8:00 am. We couldn't sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept, our mother gave us work to do. We had to wash dishes, make beds and learn to cook. I am sure she lay awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.

    Through the years, things didn't improve a bit. We could not lie in bed "sick" like our friends did in order to miss school.

    My mother was the meanest mother. Out of four children, a couple of us went on to higher education. None of us have ever done bad things. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest people. I am trying to raise my children like this. I will feel proud when my children call me mean, because, you see, I am so glad I had the meanest mother in the whole world.

For Miller, an 80-year-old man, it's a chance of a lifetime. Miller is a part of a group of around 60 Germans who are on a bus journey along the ancient Silk Road.

About this journey, he says: “I have been deeply interested in the Silk Road since I was a child. But now I finally have a chance to experience it.”

The two-month bus journey will take the group through Germany, Russia and other 4 European countries. They will then enter China from the country's western part. It will be an unforgettable memory for them.

Nearly half of the 13,000-kilometer trip will be inside China. From Xinjiang in the west to Shanghai in the east, the German visitors will see more than 20 Chinese cities. “we have managed the trip of the Silk Road for around 10 years. An increasing number of people, not only from German-speaking countries, have been joining us.” Says Liu Guoqiang from China Tours.

Almost 26 million foreigners traveled to China in 2015, and about 5 million of them were from Europe. Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai and the Yangtze River are traditional Chinese travel destinations for European tourists. Speaking of where he wants to go, Miller says: “Compared with modern cities, the culture in western China attracts me more.”

As Shi Xiang, head of China Tours says “Being a new brand to attract foreign visitors, the Silk Road is good for people to know more about China, especially the northwestern part of the country.”

Starting in Greece and finishing in Switzerland, my journey to focus on how European countries are responding to the Belt and Road Initiative （一带一路），which President Xi Jinping raised five years ago.

Patiently talking with about 100 politicians, officials, thinkers, lawyers, businesspersons and looking for stories in airports, factories and building sites during the early 40 days have made the journey more enlightening. These modem Silk Road messengers in Europe had accepted Xi's plan as Beijing prepared to host the first-ever international cooperation forum （合作论坛）on May 14th — 15th.

The interviews have enriched my understanding even though I have been closely noticing this initiative since its announcement （公告），aiming to connect Europe, Asia and Africa.

Talks with former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi well states my major findings: by calling it a century project that will benefit half humanity, he says Europeans are competing with each other to find synergies （合并效果）with China's Belt and Road Initiative.

Italy has recently cooperated with the ZTE in a 1-billion-dollar project in improving its telecommunication infrastructure （电信基础设施）and preparing the country for the 5G era. This means improving cooperation even has opportunity in the developed economies if both sides decide to do so.

Nearly all the rich countries in Europe are members of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank （亚洲基础设施投资银行）and through it, they will find more cooperation opportunities.

I wish there would be a way to describe China in a simple word but that's impossible.

▲ In my English classes when the students were asked what they would do if they only had a few hours to live, most students told me they would spend their last few hours with their families and parents.

▲I teach in Xiangyang, a beautiful city which the Hanjiang River goes across it and I live here better. The foods are cheaper than those in the US, so are clothing and articles(物品) of everyday us. People pay less for the public transportation, too.

▲  However, it is reported that still there are a few children who can't afford the expenses(费用) of schooling. But the government organized Project Hope many years ago. It creates conditions for the poor children to go back to school.

▲I seldom saw the things mentioned of the creative(有创造力的) changes China has made. But the economic miracles(经济奇迹) have the big problems.

▲ To be honest, if I compare China with the US, my answer has always been the same: “We are not worse or better than each other; we are only different. ”
