Things to do in London

You can choose between a hackney cab, a double-decker or the tube. A hackney cab is one of the 18,000 famous black taxis in London. A double-decker is another name for the red buses in London. And the tube is the London subway.

The Thames runs through the city. Take a boat ride and see all the famous sights(景点), like Big Ben, the Tower of London or St. Paul's Cathedral. It's also the best way to see the bridges: London Bridge, Tower Bridge, etc.

You can't visit London and not go to the British Museum. Also, the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square has the best collection of European paintings in the world. Then there's the Tate Modern. It's full of art from Matisse to Miro. Of course, you can't miss Madame Tussauds. Here you can see wax models(蜡像) of famous people, like David Beckham.

There are lots of London soccer teams. Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal are the biggest. For tennis, you can visit Wimbledon, of course. Also, every April there's the London Marathon with about 30,000 runners.

Do you like movies? Get down to Leicester Square then. It's full of movie theaters with all the latest movies. Or, you can watch a show like The Phantom of the Opera in the West End. Are you looking for restaurants? Well, there are lots to choose from!

    Last summer I went to a small town in the north. I didn't know anyone there, and I couldn't speak a word of its language. On the second day, I got on a bus.  I felt happy enough in the first three hours, and then I decided to walk back to my hotel for lunch. After walking around for half an hour, I thought I was lost. He handed me a paper. I shook my head and said the name of the street again. But he gave me another paper. Then I met a policeman and asked the way. He listened to me carefully. He said something and pointed left and right and left again. 

    About an hour later, I found there were fewer and fewer houses around. The only thing I could do was to find the nearest train station.

    Everybody knows that healthy eating habits are very important. Here are five good eating habits for you. I'm sure you will live a healthy and happy life if you follow them.

Drink about 8 cups of water every day. You may need even more water when you do exercise.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You will have more energy (能量) after you eat breakfast.

Don't eat junk food or food that has much fat for lunch. They are bad for your health. If you don't have enough time to have a healthy lunch, bring some bread with you for a quick lunch.

Fruit and vegetables should be a necessary part of your food. You can have a vegetable salad for your lunch. If you don't like eating vegetables, you can eat some fruit.

Try to have dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed. Your body needs time to digest (消化) most of the food.

    We know health and happiness are important to our life. Here are some ways to get them.

      ①    Eat a lot of fruit and vegetable and less meat. Don't eat too much junk food.

      ②   It is best to get about eight hours of sleep a day. It is very bad for our health if we don't have enough sleep.

      ③   It stops you from having bad habits. To keep yourself busy, you can work around the house, spend time with your pet, write letters to your friends, do a sport, or do anything you enjoy.

      ④   Spend time and have fun with people. Talk with them, but don't talk about anything bad. You should stay with the people who are healthy and happy.

    Remember that nothing is more important than health and happiness.

I fell down (摔倒) and broke my arm last year on my way home after school. Anna was walking near me at that time. She ran to me and took me to the hospital. In the following days, she told me jokes and helped me with study. We talked about everything. We became good friends soon.

Anna is very beautiful. She is tall and quite thin. She has curly hair. It's long and blonde. She usually wears a pair of red glasses and she always wears cool clothes. Sometimes I wish I could be as beautiful as she is. Anna could play the piano very well when she was just five years old. She is good at singing, too. She sings beautifully and clearly. She won many singing competitions. She started learning to play the guitar last month. Now she can play many pieces of music well. Anna is good at math. She does lots of math exercises every day and she goes to math class on the weekend. I was afraid of math and I always failed (不及格) in math test. But now my math is better with the help of Anna. She spends three hours helping me with my math every day.

Every one of us, rich or poor, should have one or more good friends. Friends are very important in our lives because they are always there when we need them.I am truly happy to have a friend like her.

    English is the first language of several countries. However, it has many differences. British, American, and South African English are all spoken differently. In many English language courses, the British and American differences are taught. There are important differences between the two.

    Probably the biggest difference between American and British English is the vocabulary. Different words and expressions are used to talk about the same thing. For example, in the United States, people throw their garbage into the trash can. In England, people throw their rubbish into the dustbin. In Britain, people take a lift to the fifth floor. In America, people take an elevator.

    American and British grammar can be also different. For example, speakers of British English will ask "What did you do at the weekend?", but Americans usually say "on the weekend." In the United States people usually say "I've gotten a new car.", but in the UK they will say "I've just got a new car."

    The pronunciation in American and British English is also different, even when the spelling is the same. The word "tomato"—pronounced "to-mah-to" in British English—is a classic example of this.Vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation are three ways English is different in different parts of the world.

    Learning all these is not easy, so English learners should just know that they are always there.

    June came and the hottest month of the year began. A lot of travelers came to the city by the sea. All of the hotels were full except Mr. Johnson's. The prices of all the rooms were the lowest in the city but few people stayed there. The fire broke out three times in a year and four travelers died in the accidents. Most workers left there and found jobs in other hotels. Mr. Johnson had to do most work himself.

    It was eleven o'clock. Most rooms were still empty. Mr. Johnson worked for the whole day and was very tired. He went to close the gate when a young man came in, with a big bag in his hand.

    "What can I do for you, sir?" asked Mr. Johnson.

    "The cheapest room in your hotel."

    "OK," said Mr. Johnson, "but it's on the top floor."

    "It doesn't matter. I think you have a lift in your hotel."

    "Of course, sir," said the manager. "It'll take you right there. By the way, may I keep your bag for you?"

    "No, thanks. There's nothing expensive in it but a long rope."

    Oh? What do you bring it with you for?"

    "I'm afraid another fire will happen in your hotel. If it does, I'll throw the rope out of the window so that I'll be able to escape from (逃脱) it."

    "Yes?" Mr. Johnson said in surprise. "So you have to pay for the bill before you go to your room."

    One of the Great British Bake Off winners Nadiya is telling us something about her life and her book Bake Me a Story.

A: My kids like reading books, and they also like staying with me in the kitchen when I cook. So I think if I write a book with both stories and recipes (食谱), parents and kids can enjoy cooking together in the kitchen and then read a story when they wait for the food to cook.

Q: You baked (烘烤) the Queen' s birthday cake!

A: It' gave me great pleasure to bake for the Queen and to be a part of history. I would like to bake for David Attenborough too!

A: The blueberry and orange soda bread. It's quick and easy, and it's very delicious.

A: Of course not! To see the looks on their faces and hear the happy noises they make when they eat the cakes makes all the hard work worth (值得) it.

A: My most important advice is "Don't be worried about cleaning up "the kitchen. Try things out in the kitchen and have fun!"
