Imagine a plate holding two strawberries, similar in appearance. One came out of a supermarket box, meaning it was probably harvested before it is fully grown, immediately placed in a forced-air cooling unit, loaded onto a refrigerated truck and driven hundreds of miles. By the time it reached the plate two weeks may have passed. The other strawberry was picked from a garden minutes before being eaten.

The first one will probably not taste good as expected. The second is likely to be sweet; the flavor will remain in the mouth. Supermarket strawberries are not entirely without advantages: they are convenient and available even in winter. But the two berries differ from each other in the same way that hearing music in a concert hall differs from listening to an MP3. The home-grown fruit is an eatable case for planting a home garden.

Planting cool-weather greens can seem meaningless as well-stocked supermarket shelves are available all week. But the same could be said of cooking: cheap and good restaurants everywhere, so why bother to make your own meals?

That attitude fails to understand the basic appeal of gardening: it mistakes the product for the purpose. It is true that a garden can produce tomatoes and carrots that taste like themselves rather than the plastic they are usually packaged in. Finding some favorite vegetables in the shops can take some time, effort and expense; growing your own vegetables, rare or routine, ensures a reliable supply.

On the other hand, a garden, especially in the early years, can also produce frustration. Creative gardeners may plant the wrong crops for their soil. Little animals may have the habit of taking single bites of cucumbers, beans and tomatoes. And even expert gardeners can lose a season's harvest to uncooperative weather.

No matter. The real joy of gardening is the time spent doing it. The deepest pleasure一as with cooking, writing, bringing up children or almost anything worthwhile一is in the work itself. A gardener's memories center not around the food produced, but around long summer afternoons with hands in the dirt of a home garden, surrounded by family. To garden is to patiently and lovingly help life grow, in the ground and above it.

As you may have noticed, despite years of efforts to get more women into management, most company bosses are still men. Encouraging women to be more confident isn't the best way to deal with the leadership gap between males and females. As a matter of fact, women have greater chances of becoming bosses in the opt-out model than they do in the opt-in model.

In the opt-in model, women often undervalue their own skills. Some come from cultures that teach them to be modest; others fear seeming too active. Therefore, women are less confident and tend to work more years than men do before applying for a promotion. They basically need to feel super ready.

The researchers decided to overturn the model: What if all qualified applicants running for leadership roles have the choice to give up if they want to? This so-called opt-out model pushes companies to keep hiring employees unless the staff take steps to show they don't want to participate.

Researchers tested the idea in the lab. In a series of experiments, more than 1,000 men and women worked in teams on a variety of tasks. They were all evaluated on the quality of their work, and the highest performers naturally became bosses unless they actively gave up. Surprise: The management male/female gap narrowed in the opt-out model.

In another group where people needed to opt in to be considered for a leadership role, the imbalance continued, even when women knew they were top performers and would surely become the boss if they applied. The suggestion is that all those efforts to support equality have little effect unless it is naturally accepted that women are suitable for leaderships.

Opt-in models are everywhere in the workplace. Being aware of the problem and then finding ways to change the models is really important. If women have to opt in, the message is "you shouldn't consider signing up unless you think you're really competent and competitive." In an opt- out system, however, the message is everyone is qualified and under consideration. It's a policy that basically brings better choices for managers and it is really good for the future of organizations.

Strategies to Strengthen Your Immune System

Infections are unavoidable and everyone can get sick.You scratch, cough, ache, and sweat. When you are getting old, your immune system weakens. Fortunately, there are other ways you can strengthen your immune system, besides healthy diets and regular exercise.

Socialize more.

People with richer social lives enjoy better health and life. With more communication or company, they release the stress and strengthen happiness, which promotes their immune system.  If they did get sick, they would have fewer symptoms for a shorter period of time.

Vitamin D plays a number of roles in promoting normal immune function. Unfortunately, nearly one-third of the U.S. population lack vitamin D. Because few foods contain much vitamin D, your best bet is to regularly spend short periods of time in the sun (without sunscreen).

Choose vitamin pills wisely.

Studies link lack of vitamins A, B6, C, D and E to reduced immune function. But scientists have yet to set exact levels of these nutrients for best immune function. For instance, research has not proved the function of vitamin C in prevention and treatment of the common cold. Some micronutrients, notably vitamin A, can be poisonous if consumed too much.

Immunize yourself.

 Most immunizations occur during childhood to ensure a healthy growth. For adults of all ages, vaccinations (接种疫苗) strengthen their immune system and defend them against possible disease attacks.

Eight years ago, Al Nixon decided to work for the city's water department. On our way to California, my husband Lee and I stopped at a restaurant to have lunch and stretch our legs a bit with our kids Jack and Jenny.

As we walked toward the entrance, an ugly looking doorman jumped up from a nearby bench and opened the door for us. "Good afternoon and welcome to Denny's," he said in a very joyful voice. In his hand he held a cup full of steaming coffee- which was inviting on such a cold day一but from the looks of the rest of him, it appeared that he hadn't had a good meal or a shower in a long time. Obviously he was homeless. But regardless of his appearance, he greeted us as if we were his best friends, adding as we entered, "Today's soup and sandwich special is a great deal."

Once inside, my kids whispered to me, "Mom, he smells." After we ordered our lunch, Lee and I explained the best we could, telling the kids to look beyond the dirt to the person underneath and within. As we explained, the four of us watched other customers approach the restaurant. They appeared unsure of the homeless man and many ignored him.

Seeing this rudeness truly frustrated me. When we were almost finished, I excused myself from the meal and went to the truck for my purse.

As I neared the front door, the doorman was opening it for a couple and welcoming them to the restaurant. They rushed past him and didn't even acknowledge his presence. I let the couple come through first and then said a loud, and polite ""thank you" to the doorman as I exited.

When I came back, we talked a lot. The doorman told me that the restaurant's manager wouldn't let him inside unless he purchased food. All l he could afford was coffee which, he said, didn't count as "food" according to the manager, so he had to stay outside.
