In July 2007a BBC concert showcased the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble at a hall in London. The performance ended to a big round of applause. Among the crowd was 41-year-old Dr Luis Dias. He had heard of this chorus and knew it consisted of children from South Africa's poorest towns, but had never seen them performing live.

Born in 1966 to a family of Goan doctors, Dias followed in his family's foot steps, but he had a great passion for music. In 1998he went to work in London. After watching the Buskaid performance, Dias began to explore the possibility of starting a similar effort for disadvantaged children in India.

In 2008 he and his wife gave up their comfortable life in the UK and returned to their home in Panjim, Goa. In just one year the couple founded Child's Play In- dia Foundation. Realizing that setting up the project and teaching music would be a full-time effort, Dias abandoned his medical career and became a poorly paid music teacher.

Yet, it was not easy getting such an enterprise off the ground. Aside from get-ting the necessary fund it was important to find a place that would safely house the children teachers and equipment. They eventually found the perfect partner, a woman behind Hamara School, a shelter for disadvantaged children in Panjim. From these difficult beginnings, Child's Play gradually grew. Child's Play puts on at least two concerts a year to which the children's families and general public are invited. Have you ever felt as if the entire world was watching while you made a mistake? Well, here's some good news: it's likely that no one even noticed.

The spotlight effect(聚光灯效应)is a trick of the mind that makes us believe that people notice us more often than they really do. We experience the spotlight effect not only when we make mistakes but also when we perform well. It might hap pen when we make a mistake in a game, have a bad hair day, or give a terrible answer in class. It can also appear when we score a big goal or do a good deed. In these moments, it feels like everyone is watching.

The spotlight effect exists for we all get used to seeing things through our own eyes. Every person is the main character in his or her story and the events of our lives seem to have great importance. We are so busy examining ourselves that we actually observe very little about everyone around us.

The spotlight effect is a very common part of the human experience. However in some cases, it can lead to extreme social anxiety and nervousness around other people.

Everyone suffers some degree of social anxiety. We all care about what others think, and we all want to be liked. It's normal to wonder about what effect we have on other people. However, this can be a problem when the anxiety is too much to handle. If someone is so nervous that they can't make good decisions then its time to take action and improve the situation.

Learning about the spotlight effect is important because it can help us reduce our anxiety. The next time you feel like everyone is staring at you're mind yourself that it's just your mind playing tricks on you. Another good exercise is to make an effort to notice the people around you, rather than focusing on yourself. If you fill your mind with thoughts of your friends and family, it will help you be less self-conscious.

(1)、What can we know about the spotlight effect?
A、It makes people be the center of the attention B、It is an occurrence only when people do wrong. C、It misleads people over the attention they receive D、It often causes people to find fault with the others.
(2)、What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A、The harm focusing on oneself brings. B、The reason behind the spotlight effect. C、The effect of being too hard on oneself D、The lack of connection between people
(3)、What does the author say about social anxiety?
A、It is normal but is hard to get rid of. B、It can easily lead to poor decisions C、It can result from the spotlight effect. D、It is difficult to avoid for certain people.
(4)、From which is the text probably taken?
A、A guidebook. B、A biology textbook. C、A news report. D、A research paper.
  • 4. 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

On a late summer's day, various boats sail in and out of Lymington's harbor(港口) and a large boat slowly stops at the port. Hidden beneath the ferry port is a little-known project, one that could quietly change the quality of the marine environment along the UK's coastline.

Many sets of specially designed oyster breeding(牡蛎养殖)cages are placed under the port. One big oyster can actually produce a million babies each year. So, all those oysters in the cages are fantastic at helping to increase the population that faces a severe decline.

A combination of loss of natural habitat on the seabed over harvesting and pollution has destroyed around 95 percent of native oysters in UK waters. Oysters are best known as a delicacy, but their role in the marine environment is a far more important one. They are ecosystem engineers. A single oyster can filter(过滤)around200 liters of water per day. So, when oysters come together, they're able to vastly improve the coastal water quality.

While the remarkable recovery might seem like an impossible task, marine scientists are confident this could become reality. "Each female adult oyster can produce between one and two million babies, so you don't need huge amounts of oysters to increase the population, "says Dr Luke Helmera marine scientist. "The problem is with the next step of actually providing them with somewhere to settle and live. "

Oysters are quite happy to find a home on a rockor stone but the challenge for conservationists is to recreate that environment for them and to protect them. For now, these new oysters are being kept out of harm's way in conservation areas but as they start to reproduce people could again harvest them from the sea bed. The hope is they will be better protected.

(1)、How does the little-known project benefit UK?
A、It saves the oyster industry in the UK. B、It creates cleaner seas around the UK. C、It increases the UK ports trade in oysters D、It helps make the sea in the UK richer in species
(2)、What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 4 refer to?
A、Restoring oysters in large numbers. B、Caging huge amounts of oysters up. C、Breeding plenty of oysters at a time D、Protecting the oyster's natural habitat.
(3)、What does the author stress in the last paragraph?
A、The battle between men and nature. B、The challenge conservationists face C、The complexity of breeding oysters. D、The contributions of conservationists.
(4)、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A、Ferry Port: New Home to Oysters B、Oyster Breeding: An Essential Task C、Oysters—The Coastline Guardians D、A Little-known Project: A Solution from the Sea
