During the later missions, the astronauts practised flying their space- ships. On the Apollo 8 mission, the astronauts flew around the moon. They were nearly ready for the first moon landing.

    The Apollo 11 mission used a special spaceship. Its name was "Eagle". The Eagle landed on the moon on July 20, 1969.

    Only two astronauts walked on the moon that day. Neil Armstrong was the first person to step onto the moon. Buzz Aldrin followed him. The world watched the landing on TV. Michael Collins stayed in the spaceship. It was his job to look after the spaceship that would take them home. He had to make sure nothing would happen to it.

    The astronauts did many experiments while they were on the moon. They also took, some pictures of the moon. The astronauts left an American flag on the moon. Now the flag is still there. Someday moon travel may be common, and people will visit the place of the first moon landing.

    If you watch the sky for about an hour after the sun goes down, you may see some "moving stars". But they're not really stars. They're man-made satellites. And the biggest of all is the International Space Station (ISS). From May to July is the best season to watch the ISS flying over the Earth. And people can see it with their eyes.

    The ISS is the biggest satellite and, scientists want to live on it. They think that the best way to learn more about space is to live there.

    When the space station is finished, it will be like a city in space. People will stay and study there with many of the things they have at home. Laboratories, living rooms and power stations are being built. The I ISS is the most expensive space programme. Billions of dollars are being spent on it every year.

    Scientists hope that the ISS will be a stepping stone for future space exploration(探索). "The ISS will help us understand the human body better, explore space and study the Earth. It can help us make life on the Earth better, said Kathryn Clark, an ISS scientist.

    Sixteen countries are part of the programme: the US, Russia, Canada, Japan, Brazil and 11 European countries. China isn't an ISS country, but it has helped with some of the experiments. In 2003, China sent some rice up to the ISS to find out what space would do to it.

    At the moment, it may be difficult to imagine, but many people believe that, by the year 2100, we will live on the planet Mars. Our own planet, the Earth, is becoming more and more crowded and polluted. Luckily, we can start again and build a better world on Mars.

    First of all, transport should be much better. At present, our spaceships are too slow to carry large numbers of people to Mars- it takes months. However, by 2100, spaceships can travel at half the speed of light. It might take us two or three days to get to Mars!

    Secondly, humans need food, water and air to live. Scientists should be able to develop plants that can be grown on Mars. These plants will produce the food and air that we need. However, can these plants produce water for us? There is no answer now.

    There is a problem for us to live on Mars. Mars pulls us much less than the Earth does. This will be dangerous because we could easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space. To prevent this, humans on Mars have to wear special shoes to make themselves heavier.

    Life on Mars will be better than that on the Earth in many ways. People will have more space. Living in a large building with 10 bedrooms is highly possible. Many people believe that robots will do most of our work, so we have more time for our hobbies.

    There will probably be no school on Mars. Every student will have a computer at home which is connected to the Internet. They can study, do their homework and take exams in online schools. Each student will also have their own online teacher called "e-teacher".

    However, in some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on the Earth today. Food will not be the same-- meals will probably .be in the form of pills and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will make many people feel ill. The spaceship will travel fast, so the journey to Mars will probably be very uncomfortable.
