This week, we answer aquestion from a listener who writes: I work with some native speakers of English.I want to practice speaking with them so I'll improve my English. But sometimes,I get nervous, so our conversation ends quickly. How can I talk with these friendsfor a long time?
You are right. It is not always easy to keep a conversation going in English. You might not be sure about what to say. Or maybe you are afraid that your pronunciation is not good.
First, remember the importanceof listening. Listen to the other person carefully. So that you can ask a follow-upquestion. For example, let's say the other person tells you, "I just got backfrom a trip to Canada". You can follow up with a question using Who, What,Where, When, Why, or How: Where did you go in Canada? What was your favorite placethere? How was the food there? If you want to keep a conversation going, it's agood idea to ask questions that cannot be answered with a simple 'yes' or 'no'.If the other person asks you a 'yes' or 'no' question, try to give a longer answerto help keep the conversation going. For example, a friend might ask, "Hey,have you seen the newStar Wars movie? You could just answer, "No, Ihaven't". Or, you could say more. You could answer, "No, but I plan tosee it soon. How about you?"
Do not worry about your pronunciation. If your pronunciation is a little different, the other person will still understand your message if you try speaking slowly and clearly. When you're travelling in an English-speaking country and have some free time, be brave and speak in English with someone who does not look too busy. You may make a new friend.
OK, that's it. We wouldlike to hear from you. Please understand that we cannot answer all of the questionsour listeners send us.

Being a mom is hard work. There's always something new to do to make my kids happy. Sometimes, I need to do something just for.me. It teaches my kids an important lesson: I matter, too.
I know parenting articles often tell us it's OK to take time for ourselves. But it's so much harder to walk the talk. Of course, we should put ourselves first sometimes. And not just when we are sick. I'm talking about putting ourselves first in other ways. For example, tell the baby that after thirty minutes of reading to them, you are going to read your own book or eat at your favorite restaurant. These selfish moments are good ways to teach our children that we are important too.
When you ask my kids "What does mom like?" They can answer with some of my interests and favorite things: reading books, watching movies, taking care of animals and then. They often see me do the things I enjoy, so they understand me and would stay with Dad. This understanding is good for our children." She's a mom" shouldn't be the only way your child describes you. If it is, it's time to be a little selfish, Moms.
