If any New Yorker of Asian descent( 血统) needs a safe way to get around, Madeline Park has got their back. Park created an Instagram account called “Cafemaddycab” amid a wave of anti-Asian hate crimes across the US. The account has one goal: to pay the Uber or Lyft fee for any woman or elderly individual of Asian descent in New York in order to help them get to their destinations safely if they feel “unsafe taking the train in NYC".

Park, who had spent a majority of her decade in New York as a “broke student”, knew all too well what it was like to have to take the train or walk home rather than calling a cab because it was too expensive.

Now, she's using money from her own pocket, as well as from other donors, to make sure the cost isn't preventing anyone else from getting a ride. She decided to do so after fearing for her own safety just the other week.

“That's it. I took the train to work last week and every minute of the ride I was stressed," Park said in an Instagram post.“I was afraid that someone was going to walk up and start attacking me.”

One incident still on Park's mind was when “someone set a 29 year -old Asian woman's backpack on fire in the train around Ktown". Park said she was done taking the train while these hate crimes were going on and so should you.

Park started out with $ 2,000 of her own money, which she used to help reimburse(报销) any Lyft or Uber ride up to $ 40 per person. Within two days, donors collectively poured in over $ 100, 000 to help with her efforts. Park started accepting more donations and she expected other cities to start their own cab initiative(倡议).However, it's no small task.

“You have to have the TIME to commit to this and preferably a few people you trust to work with you, and a big heart for our community # StopAsianHate,” Park wrote in an Instagram post.

You might not expect it, but cows are a large source of the greenhouse gases that are driving climate change. Now scientists have shown the pollution from cows can be reduced by adding a little seaweed to their food.

A cow has one stomach, but it has four separate sections, one of which has a special chemical that helps break down the grass into something the cow's body can use. But the process of breaking down the grass produces much methane(甲烷), the world's second worst greenhouse gas.

Recently, the researchers from the University of California, Davis studied 21 cows on a farm for about five months. They taught the cows to get their food from inside a special hood(罩), which allowed the scientists to know the amount of the methane the cows were giving off. They used a small amount of seaweed, which they mixed with the cows' food.

The results were surprisingly good. In some cases, the cows produced 82% less methane- the improvement depended on the kind of food the cows were given. And even the worst- polluting cows produced 33% less methane.

Over the five months, the scientists didn't see any signs that the cows' stomachs were starting to produce more methane again. Besides, the cows that were fed seaweed gained just as much weight as the other cows, but they didn't need as much food.

But there are still some big problems with the idea of feeding cows seaweed. For one thing， there's not enough seaweed to feed all of the cows in the world. So farmers would have to figure out a way to grow lots of seaweed. A bigger problem is that for most of their lives, cows live in fields, where they eat the grass. That means there's no chance to feed them seaweed every day.

Still, it's very good news that something as simple as feeding cows seaweed can help reduce some of the pollution causing the climate crisis.

With summer being the busiest season for most national parks, the potential for meeting with wildlife increases. Visitors should watch out. In fact, incidents because of attacks from the wildlife are rare.

Many problems with wildlife can be avoided simply by doing a little research before entering an unfamiliar area. For instance, the American alligator( 短吻鳄) can be found from South Carolina to Florida and to Texas. When you visit parks in those areas, remind yourself not to approach an alligator or get in the water with one,

In addition, one way to prevent dangerous wildlife encounters is to keep your food to yourself. Animals occasionally come to associate humans with food.In fact, even small wildlife animals with a taste for human food can be surprisingly harmful.
