Many people say that they are working too many hours. They don't have enough time to relax or to stay with their family.

Work hours are different from one country to another. In France, people spend about 1,646 hours a year at work. In Japan, however, people work about 2,159 hours a year. That means a Japanese worker works 513 more hours a year than a French worker.

Why do people work so many hours? Some people work extra hours because they want to make more money. However, many companies don't pay overtime. Their workers don't get more pay for more work. Some people think it's their duty to work more hours. Some are afraid of losing their jobs if they don't work more hours.

Many people say that their vacations are too short. In France, people get five weeks of paid vacation a year. In Germany, they get four to six weeks， and in the United States, two weeks. One study shows fewer than half of workers used all their vacation days. In Great Britain, there is a saying, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull (迟钝的) boy. "If that is true, there must be a lot of dull people in the world.

If you want to get healthy or stay healthy, there is one easy activity for you—walking.

You may think that simply taking a walk is not enough to make a big difference. You may think that you need to do something like running to stay healthy.

Well, a new study says that is not true. It finds out that walking may be as good for us as running.

Running is high-impact (高强度的) activity and can be hard on the body. So, many people cannot run. Walking seems to have all of the advantages and none of the disadvantages of running.

Dr Russell Pate is a professor of exercise science at the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. He says, "Walking is one of the easiest and safest exercises a person can do. You do not need to learn a lot to get results."

Walking needs no special skills or equipment. You can do it anywhere. It fits easily into your daily schedule(日程表).You can walk at work. You can walk if you want to go shopping. You can take the stairs instead of the lift.

Charles Darwin

One of the most famous scientists to study adaptations (适应) was Charles Darwin. He was born in England in 1809.He wasn't the best student in his school, but when he was 16, his father sent him to a medical school. Charles liked spending time outdoors observing(观察) nature more than attending medical classes. He dropped out (退学) without graduating.

Next, Charles's father sent him to school to become a minister (牧师). This time he made it to graduation. But he didn't want to do the work of a minister. His friends encouraged him to follow his interest in science.

After graduation, Charles was invited to sail on the Beagle as an unpaid (无薪) scientist. He wasn't the first choice, but he was the lucky one to go. The Beagle was to travel to South America and then around the world. The crew' s (全体船员) task was to make maps of the places they visited.

On December 27th, 1831, Charles Darwin sailed from England on the Beagle. The trip was planned to last two years. In fact, it lasted five years. During this time, he saw many amazing things. He collected lots of plants and animals and took them back to England to study.
