    A young officer was at a railway station. On his way home, he wanted to telephone his mother to tell her the time of his train, so that she could meet him at the station in her car. He looked in all his pockets, but found that he did not have the right money for the telephone, so he went outside and looked around for someone to help him.

    At last an old soldier came by, and the young officer stopped him and said, "Have you got change for ten pence?"

    "Wait a moment," the old soldier answered, beginning to put his hand in his pocket, "I'll see whether I can help you."

    "Don't you know how to speak to an officer?" the young man said angrily. "Now let's start again. Have you got change for ten pence?"

    Once upon a time, there was a king. He liked to stay in his palace. One day, he went far away for a trip. When he went back to his palace, his feet were very painful (疼痛的). It was the first time that he went for a long trip, and the road was not good. He then ordered his people to cover all the roads of the country with soft leather.     Some students are in Han Mei's house. They are talking about many things. They are eating and drinking something. Han Mei's mother is cooking for them. It's eleven o'clock. It's lunch time. They are eating. Han Mei says, "Help yourselves." Jim likes eggs. Kate likes rice. Lucy likes bread. Lily doesn't like bread. She likes bananas. They are drinking ten bottles of orange. They are having a very good time.

    December 25th is Christmas day. In western countries it is the most important day in the year. All the people come back to their homes. On Christmas day, bells ring everywhere. The ringing bells tell people Christmas is coming. People sing and dance day and night. They have a good time.

    Most family buys a Christmas tree for their children. And there are some presents in the tree here and there. People also put presents in children's stockings. In many places, Father Christmas himself brings presents to them. He is a kind man in red clothes. There is a big bag on his back. In it there are a lot of presents.

    On Christmas Day, people enjoy all kinds of food. But some poor people have no houses to live and no food to eat. They die of chill and hunger on Christmas Day.

    My name is Julie. I'm 14 years old. I live with my parents in a large flat. I have black hair. I like reading books and playing computer games. I usually get up at 6:30 a.m. Sometimes I have breakfast at home. I go to school at 7:00 a.m. Our classes begin at 7:30. In the morning, I have four classes, such as Music, Chinese, PE and English.     The pupils began to write in their exercise books, and for a long time nobody spoke. Then one boy put his hand up and said, "Could you say the question once again, please?" Miss Jones said, "If an apple and a half..." But the boy shouted, "oh, an apple and a half? All the time I am working it out (算出来) in oranges, Miss Jones. So the answer must be different."

    Mr. White lives in a tall building. He lives on the sixteenth floor. Every day, he takes a lift (电梯) up and down.

    One Saturday afternoon, he went shopping with his little son and bought many things. They drove back and carried all the things up to the lift. Suddenly they saw a piece of paper on the wall. It said, "Dear sirs, there's something wrong with the lift. Please use the stairs now." The son took a bag and ran upstairs quickly. But Mr. White walked and walked.

    At last they stood in front of their door feeling very tired. Mr. White began to look for the keys, but he could not find them. Suddenly he shouted in a loud voice, "Oh, no! I've left my keys in the car."

    There are many people in the bus. Some have seats, but some have to stand. At a bus stop, a woman gets on the bus. An old man hears the door and tries to stand up. "Oh, no, thank you," the woman forces (强迫) him back to the seat. "Please don't do that. I can stand." "But, madam , let me…,"says the man. "I ask you to keep your seat," the woman says. She puts her hands on the old man's shoulder. But the man still  tries to stand up, "Madam, will you please let me…?""Oh, no," says the woman. She again forces the man back. At last the old man shouts, "I want to get off the bus!"

    Mr Li is 55 years old now．He makes toys from dough(生面团)．His hands are rough(粗糙的)because he works with dough all the time．Mr Li makes dough toys of different sizes．Only a small piece of dough and some simple tools are required to make a dough toy．He uses his hands to turn the dough into different characters，for example the Monkey King．Dough of different colours is used to make the toys more interesting．I like Mr Li's toys because they are lovely．

  My English name is Tina. I live in Jinan. It's a beautiful city. I like drawing pictures and collecting stamps. My mother works in a school. She is a teacher. She teaches art. My home is near her school. So my mother often goes to work on foot. Sometimes she teaches me to draw in the evening. My father is a doctor. He works in a big hospital. He goes to work by bus. He likes collecting things too. But he doesn't collect stamps. He collect coins. He has many coins. I like my family.

    Polite people are nice to other people. Polite people never talk loudly in public(公共场合), in the library, in hospital, in the cinema... When they ask for something, they usually say, "Please". And they get something, they say, "Thank you". When they meet a person, they always say, "Hello" or "Nice to see you." When they leave, they usually say, "Goodbye". A polite student never comes to school late. If you are late, you should say, "I am sorry." to the teacher after class. In class if you can't answer the teacher's question, you can say, "I am sorry. I don't know."

    Judy is good at sports. She loves different kinds of sports. She can swim and skate very well. She often plays basketball and volleyball. These days, she is taking table tennis lessons at a table tennis club. She goes to the club on the weekends. There she meets Kate and Joan. They become good friends. Kate and Joan started their table tennis lessons earlier than Judy, but Judy plays the best of the three.

"You should take part in the table tennis match in our town next year. You must be a winner." Kate says to Judy.

    "But I have sports only for exercise and fun, you know." Judy answers.
