★The 13th annual Dubuque Senior Tri-State Hoopfest will take place on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Nora Gymnasium.

★The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dubuque is now taking teams for its 3rd/4th grade boys and girls basketball league. The league starts on Monday, Sept. 7, with two games per week for five weeks. Many cities in the world are benefiting from the nocturnal (夜间活动的) activities of a group of people who call themselves guerrilla(游击队的) gardeners. Armed with trowels(铲子)，spades and a van full of flowers and plants, guerrilla gardeners turn abandoned urban land into a blaze of color. In city centre locations where there was mud, weeds and empty plastic bottles, residents often wake up to find that the wasted area has been transformed

In most British cities, local governments and police turn a blind eye to the exploits of the gardeners, whose activities are always carried out under cover of nightfall. And so far, there has been nothing but praise from the astonished and delighted local residents when they find their neighborhood transformed in such a striking fashion.

Not only do the guerrilla gardeners beautify neglected places, they also return regularly to water the plants and weed the flower beds. They also make sure that at least some of the plants they bring are evergreens, which means that the area doesn't loo dismal(凄凉的) in the winter months.

The first guerrilla gardener in London was Richard Reynolds, whose day job was at an advertising agency. Mr. Reynolds, a graduate of Oxford University, began his efforts two years ago when he moved to a flat in a tower block in South London. From his balcony, he could see several empty concrete pots, placed by the local governments to contain plants but never used. He went out after midnight and filled the pots with plants, and then planted more flowers in the path leading to the entrance to the block.

He then set up a website to explain his plan and called upon more gardeners to join him. Cash donations flooded in and, more importantly, volunteers rushed to be part of the campaign. Within six months, there were five hundred people in London prepared to come out at very short notice to

revitalize(恢复活力) neglected parts of the urban landscape. There are now unofficial but carefully-organized groups in many cities in Britain and North America and there is also a website where would-be urban gardeners can find out the location of the next expedition.

Can exercise during childhood protect you against memory loss many decades later? Exercise early in life seems to have lifelong benefits for the brain, in rats at least.

"This is an animal study, but it shows that physical activity at a young age is very important - not/just for physical development, but for the whole lifelong track of cognitive(认知的) development during ageing, "says Martin Wojtowicz of the University of Toronto, Canada. "In humans, it may delay the appearance of Alzheimer's disease(阿尔茨海默病), possibly to the point of preventing it. "

Wojtowicz's team divided 80 young male rats into two equal groups, and placed running wheels in the cages of one group for a period of six weeks. Around four months later- when the rats had reached middle age the team taught all the rats to connect an electric shock with being in a specific box. When placed in the box, they froze with fear.

Two weeks later, the team tested the rats in three situations: exactly the same box in the same room, the same box with the room arranged differently, and a completely different box in a different room.

The rats without access to a running wheel when they were young now froze the same percentage of times in each of these situations, suggesting they couldn't remember which one was dangerous. But those that had been able to run in their youth froze 40 to 50 percent less in both changed box settings.

"The results suggest the amount of physical activity when we're young, at least for rats, has influence on the brain and cognitive health- in the form of better memories- when we're older," says Arthur Kramer of Northeastern University in Boston, who has found that, in humans, exercise promotes the growth of new brain cells.

Some wonderfully creative uses of X-rays have been in the world of art. But the most impressive one is to uncover what has been covered up. Details unfolded by an X-ray of a painting can't be seen any other way. For example, in the past, paintings were often repaired if small pieces of paint fell off the canvas(帆布).These repairs cannot be seen just by looking at the painting. It takes an X-ray to discover where the repairs have been made.

An X-ray of a painting is one of the best ways to tell if it was created by a famous painter or if it is a forgery. If there is a question as to whether an old master has painted a certain painting or not, X-rays are made and compared to those of paintings that are known to be original. If the brushstrokes(笔迹）, for example, are shown to be totally different from those in other works done by a certain artist, then the painting is proved to be a fake copy.

Since modern paints are usually made from different materials than paints of hundreds of years ago, the image they leave on an X-ray film looks different. This is another way X-rays can be used to spot a forgery. A modern artist will try to make a forgery look hundreds of years old by painting dirty varnish on it or by using artificial means to get the varnish to look cracked. To the naked eye the forgery may look old, but when a careful study of the X-ray image is made, the deception is obvious.

It was common many years ago for an artist to finish a painting, decide it wasn't any good, and paint a completely different picture on top of it. Or artists would paint over others' work-it was their version of recycling. Taking an X-ray is the only way to find out if there is a picture underneath the picture you see with your eyes. Sometimes museums will be more interested in the painting beneath than the one on top, and will restore the older one by having the top layer painstakingly removed.

No one doubts that students should study language, math and science in high school, but some may object to the idea that they should study art and music as well. To them, these subjects are useless for students' future and are not worth the time and effort. .

Art and music are precious cultural legacy(遗产), which brings us pleasure and enjoyment. Have you ever been touched by Beethoven's famous Fate Symphony? My first year living in Los Angeles, I was a birthday-party clown. I struggled a lot with my identity because, though I viewed myself as a 1  everyone in my life viewed me as this 2 day job. To make matters more confusing, being a clown is3an identity-masking job.

One night, someone said:" Tomorrow you're going to be Batman." At the time I had a giant mustache. I knew: a clown with a mustache—that's a huge red 4for parents. But I hadn't wanted to5  my physical appearance for that job,

The next day, I went to the party and I had to leave my car 6 far enough away so that the kids couldn't see Batman 7 in a PT Cruiser (PT漫步车). I popped in through the front door:" Surprise! Last weekend, my daughter and I was at a mall. I noticed a man asking the saleswomen in one of the store if they had seen his "baby boy". The poor man was worrying-nobody was helping him. I suggested my daughter that we should try our best to find her. The man disappeared into the crowd but we started looking. It cost 10 minutes for my daughter to see the little boy was very calm walking around. Then we had to wait for the father. We just stayed that we were and the father saw us finally.
