五、阅读理解

  • 19. 阅读下列短文,从下面每小题的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项

Should we be afraid of sharks? Maybe not. New research into the reasons for shark attacks  suggests that sharks don't like the way humans taste! In fact, most people who are attacked by the shark didn't die after receiving only one bite (咬). Why is this?

There are many opinions to explain why sharks sometimes attack people. One opinion is that sharks are just curious (好奇的). We know that sharks are the strongest animals in their environment, so they are not afraid of anything. Naturally, that means they are curious when they meet something unusual. Because they don't have hands or feet, the only way they can find out an object is to bite it!  It is thought that sharks sometimes bite humans for this reason, and then swim away.

Scientists also say that sharks would not waste energy trying to eat a human, as we have a lot of bones. It is hard for a shark to eat us because sharks don't have hands, and they can't pull the meat off our bones. Maybe that's why they only bite us once. Unluckily, one bite from a large shark is serious enough to hurt people greatly!

Another opinion is that sharks attack humans by mistake. Some sharks may sometimes mistake humans for a seal. An example of this is when a shark attack attacks a surfer. A surfer lying on a surfboard looks like a seal when seen from below. Sharks like seals because they have thick fat.

Whatever the reason for shark attacks on humans, sharks should be afraid of us. Sadly, we kill almost 40 million of them each year.

(1)、What happens to most people attacked by sharks?
A、Most of them became blind. B、Most of them became deaf. C、Most of them died. D、Most of them are still alive.
(2)、According to the passage, sharks find out about an unusual object ________.
    A、by biting B、by smelling C、by touching D、by killing
(3)、The underlined word "bones" means          in Chinese.
    A、毛发 B、骨头 C、脏器 D、血管
    (4)、From the passage we know___________.
A、sharks might mistake humans for seals B、sharks pull meat off bones when they eat C、sharks like to attack surfers because of their thick fat D、one bite from a shark is nothing serious
(5)、What's the main topic of the passage?
A、Surfers should stay away from sharks. B、People must stop killing sharks. C、The reasons for shark attacks on people. D、Humans are much stronger than shark.
  • 20. 根据短文内容,判断句子正误。

The World Tourism Organization says that space will soon become a popular place to go on holiday- possibly by 2020. One Japanese company is planning a space holiday center. It will look like a bicycle wheel and have a very modern hotel for 100 people and a park. It will travel around the earth at a height of 300km. The company hopes the center will be ready soon. The company manager says he thinks that flying to the center will probably be quicker than flying from Hong Kong to Singapore. After they arrive at the center tourists can take trips to the moon or go for walks in space. What about the cost? Well, the company believes that people will be happy to pay about $ 100,000 for a trip. But they think that as more people want to go, the trip will become much cheaper.

An American company is also thinking of building a very modern hotel, called the Lunar Hotel, on the moon. Most of the hotel will be under the ground, so it won't become too hot or too cold. The rooms will look just like they do on the earth. The guests will eat normal food for lunch. The cooks will just push a button (按钮) to mix dried food with water to make a meal!

There will be little or no dirt and there won't be much water. So the hotel won't wash the towels or sheets(床单) they will be thrown away.

(1)、The space holiday center will look like a bicycle wheel.
(2)、Tourists can travel under the ground after they reach the space holiday center.
(3)、If more people go to space for holiday, the price of the cost will be higher.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, people have been used to their new work situation. But what if your job is to control a mufti-billion-dollar space rover (探测车) on a planet—Mars nearly 200 million km away from Earth?

A team of NASA scientists is doing just that. In order to follow social distancing rules these scientists have had to work from home. But they've still found ways to work together and take care of the complex (复杂的) tasks that are needed to keep the Curiosity rover working on Mars.

Their work-from-home setups (装配) took much like home office setups. They use ordinary (普通) computers. But instead of working on spreadsheets (电子制表), these scientists arc programming complex sequences (序列) of instructions that are then sent to the rover. Usually, the team's 20 scientists work together by communicating through apps or video meetings. One scientist might have to follow 15 message channels (通道)at once.

NASA gave the scientists headsets (耳机) monitors and other equipment to allow them to do their jobs from home. However, the goggles (眼镜) they usually use to analyze (分析) pictures from Mars could not be sent out. So they have to depend on red-and-blue glass lenses (镜片) instead.

But difficulties like these have not been a problem for the scientists. In fact, getting used to changing situations is "classic, textbook NASA," according to the head of science operations Carrie Bridge. "We're presented with a problem and we find out how to-make things work. Mars isn't standing still for us; we're still exploring." she said.

    (1)、During the outbreak, NASA scientists________.

The following are some tips for becoming a successful businessman by Michael Bloomberg. They are based on his experience of building a company from the ground up, leading New York City as mayor (市长), and so on.

    Take Risks

Life is too short to spend your time avoiding failure.

In 1981, at the age of 39, I lost my job. The next day I took a big risk and began my own company. In 2001, when I was debating whether to run for mayor, most people advised me not to do it. But one person said, "If you can imagine yourself giving a concession (败选) speech, then why not go for it?" That was the best advice I received, and I followed it.

In order to succeed, you must first be willing to fail— and you must have the courage to go for it anyway.

    Make your own luck

Luck plays a part in success. The harder you work, the luckier you get.

Whatever you choose to do, even if it's not the job of your dreams, always work hard at it. Be the first person at work in the morning and the last to leave at night. Hard work creates chances.

        Never stop learning

The most powerful word in English language is "why". There is nothing so powerful as an open, inquiring mind (探究精神) . Whatever field you choose for starting a business — be a lifelong student.

    Give back

You are responsible for your success and failure, but you only succeed if you share the reward with others.

My first donation was a $ 5 check to my alma mater (母校) . And while the checks (支票) may be bigger today, they come with the same spirit.

You don't have to be wealthy to give back. You can give back by giving your time and talents.
