     If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

     Dreaming about whether you would want to read minds, see through walls, or have superhuman strength may sound silly, but it actually gets to the heart of what really matters in your life.

     Every day in our work, we are inspired by the people we meet doing extraordinary things to improve the world.

     They have a different kind of superpower that all of us possess: the power to make a difference in the lives of others.

We're not saying that everyone needs to contribute their lives to the poor. Your lives are busy enough doing homework, playing sports, making friends, seeking after your dreams. But we do think that you can live a more powerful life when you devote some of your time and energy to something much larger than yourself. Find an issue you are interested in and learn more. Volunteer or, if you can, contribute a little money to a cause. Whatever you do, don't be a bystander. Get involved. You may have the opportunity to make your biggest difference when you're older. But why not start now?

     Our own experience working together on health, development, and energy the last twenty years has been one of the most rewarding parts of our lives. It has changed who we are and continues to fuel our optimism about how much the lives of the poorest people will improve in the years ahead.

    In the depths of theFrench Guianese rainforest, there still remain unusual groups of indigenous(土著的) people.Surprisingly, these people live largely by their own laws and their own socialcustoms. And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because ithas been a colony(殖民地) of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, they shouldlive by the French law is often ignored or unknown, thus making them into aninteresting area of “lawlessness” in the world.

The lives of thesepeople have finally been recorded thanks to the effects of a Frenchman formParis called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2015 exploring the most remotecorners of this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, withhalf its population of only 250,000 living in its capital, Cayenne.

“I have a special lovefor the French Guianese people. I have worked there on and off for almost tenyears,” says Gin. “I've been able to keep firm friendships with them. Thus Ihave been allowed to gain access to their living environment. I don't see it asa lawless land. But rather I see it as an area of freedom.”

“I wanted to showthe audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life,”continues Gin. “I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to showdifferent specific worlds more clearly.”

His black-and-whitepictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show peopleseemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These localcitizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting huntinglifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modern French Republic, whichbrings with it not only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism,betrayal and even suicide.

A warm drink of milkbefore bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night'ssleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it ismilked from a cow at night.

  Researchers have discovered that“night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven tohelp people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.

  The study, by researchersfrom Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder madefrom cows milked both during the day and at night.

  Those given night milk, whichcontained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxiousthan those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the studypublished in The Journal of MedicinalFood.

   Night milk quickened the startof sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.

   While the effect of cowsmilk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now,taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fallasleep at night.

   Previous studies have alsoindicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calciumcontent, which helps people to relax.

  Milk is also sugar-free andadditive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choicebefore bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in beforebedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.

      Both men and women are livinglonger these days in industrialized countries.Ingeneral, they can expect to live six or seven years more than men. One reasonfor this is biological.

      One important biological factor thathelps women live longer is the difference in hormones between men and women.Between the ages of about 12 and 50,women produce hormones that are involved in fertility(生育能力). These hormones also have a positive effect on the heartand blood flow. In fact, women are less likely to have high blood pressure orto die from heart attacks.

       Theyhelp the body defend itself against some kinds of infections. This means thatwomen generally ger sick less often and less seriously than men. The commoncold is a good example: women, on average, get fewer colds than men. Scientists are still not exactly sure howinfluence aging, but they believe that they do. Some think that a woman's bodycells have a tendency(向) to age more slowly than a man's. Others think that a man's body cells have a tendency to age more quickly.
