  • 1. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Mr. Taylor checked again: water, food, bandage, medicines, a compass, and a map wrapped in plastic... Bingo! He put all that he prepared for the coming hiking into his backpack.

Mr. Taylor was fond of hiking, this time in particular, for it was the first time for him to hike with his two sons, Harry and Joel. Joel liked reading books about explorers and Harry joined the hiking club in his school this term. “It will be an unforgettable experience, definitely.” he whispered to himself, unconsciously a smile spreading over his face.

Harry and Joel, however, argued for the first three miles of their hiking trip. Harry accused Joel of wearing smelly old shoes. Joel blamed Harry for using all of the bug spray(喷雾防虫剂). Harry told Joel he smelled terrible. Joel called Harry a coward(懦夫).

“Will the two of you just quiet down and enjoy our hike together?” their father said. “You're missing all of the beautiful scenery!”

It was true. Neither Joel nor Harry had taken notice of the bear their father had spied at the start of their trip. They hadn't looked up at the eagle he pointed out overhead. Worst of all, they hadn't paid any attention to the turns and twists along the way while they continued their argument.

“Joel threw a stick at me!” Harry screamed. “That's not true!” Joel shouted back.

Mr. Taylor could no longer contain his anger. “And both of you need to stop arguing!” he erupted. As he turned to face them, his left foot caught on a root. He slipped backward and down muddy bank, falling into the river that ran alongside the path.

Harry and Joel raced to their father's assistance. They helped him up out of the water, and then dragged his wet backpack up onto land.

Fortunately, their wet-through father found himself just slightly injured.

  • 2. 读后续写

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Mike licked the last of the mint chocolate chip ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet.

When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift. Mike climbed out the pool, smiling. He had just won first place, making him the fastest boy in his age group.

"Congratulations, son," his father said. His mom gave him a hug, even though he was soaking wet.

A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike decided to enjoy his favorite ice cream flavor. Mike remembered that the last time he had won a race, he also ate mint chocolate chip ice cream first. Maybe he'd win again.

He's taken first place again in his race. Mike was feeling pretty good. As it turned out, Mike decided to have some mint chocolate chip ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of placing in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn't admit it, but all that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer's build.

It didn't take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place – and then third – and then last place in his races. The lucky mint chocolate chip ice cream had lost its magic.

On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. "Mike, we all love ice cream, but it's not healthy for your body to eat so much of it. Maybe it's time to quit the sweet treats for a while, especially before you go swimming."”

Mike unwillingly agreed. He went to the swim meet, and didn't perform well. His father offered to go running with him a few days a week to help him feel better and strengthen his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim practices.

I'd just returned from the local hospital where I'd held my first grandchild in my arms for the first time. What a beautiful child! She was named after her grandmother, Betsy. How I wished that my wife were here to see the healthy baby of Grace, our only daughter.

I knew what Betsy would have wanted and expected me to do on this grand occasion of the birth of our granddaughter, so I beaded for her favorite department store to select as a gift for our daughter.

Shopping here would cause me to feel that Betsy was still with me and could share the joy of the birth of her first granddaughter.

There was a clerk, an attractive middle-aged woman with her name tag "JOY". Her fingers lingered over a pair of diamond earrings." How about these?" she said to an elderly man. He held them up. "Oh yes, these are very pretty, "he said. He then turned to me, "What do you think? Would these be a good anniversary gift for my wife?"

"They'll be a wonderful anniversary gift, "I said, and I wondered how many years he and his wife had been married. I thought of all the years Betsy and I had shared. "When your wife wears them, they'll remind her of your love."

"That's precisely what I want them to do, "he said, smiling.

Joy asked, "What anniversary will this be?" The old man's eyes sparkled as he answered, "You'll never guess." Joy then said, "Well, diamonds are traditionally given for the sixtieth anniversary."

"You're wrong, "he said. "It's our first anniversary!" Joy looked as surprised as I felt, as the man said, "I still can't believe my good fortune the second time around, finding someone as wonderful as my wife Helen.”

"Congratulations,” Joy said. "Your wife is lucky to have such a generous husband. The first anniversary is supposed to be a paper gift. "

"Do you think I should-or even could-ask Helen to wait 59 years for her diamonds?”

Joy's eyes opened wide, "Oh, I didn't mean-”

I received an urgent call from my aunt. " Turn on the TV. Granny's on the Channel 10 news. " It turned out that Granny had made a sandwich run for her office and was stopped at a red light downtown. She had the window rolled down to enjoy the breeze when a man rushed up to the driver's side window, intending to carjack (劫车)her.

Now, what the would-be carjacker couldn't have known was that this woman simply wasn't " a granny". This was Nancy Johnson — the same woman who owned and lived on a Texas cattle farm, drove her own tractors, and dug her own post holes to lay fence. The week before, she had shot a rattlesnake and chopped off its head with a shovel. She was the proud owner of the new minivan (小型货车)she was driving. In other words, she was not your normal kind of granny.

The carjacker leaned into the open window, one hand stuffed in his pocket, and said, " Get out of this car. I have a gun, and I will shoot you.” A statement like that would have terrified anyone else. Instead, Granny saw it as a challenge." If you really had a gun in your pocket, you would've pulled it out and led with that first," she shouted at him, apparently unworried.

She was right. The criminal didn't have a gun. He instead reached into the window, grabbed her, and tried to pull her out of the van. He pulled open the door, wildly catching Granny's arms. Granny leaned her shoulder inside to press the horn (喇叭) and started yelling to make people around notice what was happening. With the door now open, she held tight the steering wheel with one arm and started kicking the man anywhere her foot could make contact. This tall woman had quite a reach.

The doctors sent my mother home to die. As a fifteen-year survivor of breast cancer, she had suffered two heart attacks when advanced cancer was found in her lung. The doctor told me sadly, "She has a few days, maybe a week. Her heart is weak and unstable. "Mom had struggled to raise three daughters while holding a full-time job, yet worked hard to maintain a warm home for her family. My plan for Mom's final days was simple: she would live with love, and die with grace.

I took mother to my home, small but comfortable, which was a heaven to four cats and a dog. The animals had the run of my house. We equipped the bedroom with an electric hospital bed and an oxygen machine, which frightened the cats. I'd moved their furniture and the cats were annoyed. The dog, on the other hand, an immature dog with bad habits, was excited by all the changes in the house. He jumped up, barking. He is Otto who was not afraid of the hospital bed, the oxygen machine or the medical smells. Nor was he afraid of the weak woman who had scolded him. Otto jumped onto the foot of Mom's hospital bed, and stayed. With the exception of eating and using the litter box, Otto never left Mom's room.

Days passed and Mom started to rally. "Not unusual," I was told, "a rally is often a sign of imminent death(回光返照)" I was heart-broken. But Otto would not give her up so easily. He used her improved condition to reposition himself from the foot of her bed to her side. Her thin fingers found his soft coat. He leaned into her body, as if holding tight the strings of her will to live. Though weak, she petted the dog and would not allowed me to take him. Days turned into weeks and Mom continued to fight.

    Paragraph 1

Once, after the nurses had gone for the day, I heard the sound of Mom's voice coming from her room. ……

    Paragraph 2

Three years later, Mom together with Otto is still here, medicines and nurses long gone.……

It was a rainy November morning .Overcome with anger I knew if I didn't leave the house soon I would lose my temper with my husband, Joe. As rain came down in sheets, Joe offered to take me to work. I struggled into my jacket, seized my bag and teaching plans and ignored him.

He insisted and reached for his boots. I looked at the piles of newspapers and the dirty dishes still on the table. "Don't you have enough to do? I can take care of myself. "I stormed out, not even kissing him good-bye. Joe shouted after me not to take the shortcut(捷径)。

Joe and I had been eagerly looking forward to our retirement when a heart attack that past spring forced him to leave his job earlier than we had planned. As the medical bills mounted we realized I would have to continue working full-time while Joe stayed home and took over the housework.

The new arrangement was a disaster. Exhausted after a day of full work, all I wanted was a hot home cooked meal and a good night's sleep. However, what greeted me at the table was a microwave package. Sometimes he would serve oatmeal(燕爱) for several nights in a row. One night when I dragged myself to bed, I was terrified to discover Joe had turned our white sheets blue: He told me he had found out how to save on water, soap and electricity. He patted his blue trousers and announced proudly washing everything together was just the secret.

Ten minutes later, ignoring Joe' s warning I turned off the main route(道路)。I thought it hadn't rained enough to flood the road, but as I rounded the corner water rushed across my path. After a few feet, the car got stuck. I opened the door and water poured in. I hurriedly closed the door. I couldn't risk walking in this. Almost 20 minutes passed. The car began to shake. I got frightened to death when I heard three long honks(喇叭声)。

Old Man Donovan was a mean man who hated children. He threw rocks at them and even shot at them with a shotgun. At least that's what we had heard.

His small farm bordered our neighborhood where my younger sister, Leigh Ann, and I lived when we were growing up. His farm was long, narrow, and quaint. It held two treasures. One was his beautiful fruit.

There were many varieties of fruit: pears, apples, and lots more I just can't think of. The fruit naturally drew the children to his land. It made them into thieves. But my sister and I didn't dare to take his fruit because of the horrible rumors we had heard about Old Man Donovan.

One summer day, we were playing in a nearby field. It was time to head back home. My sister and I were feeling very daring that day. There was a short cut to our house that went through the Donovan farm. We thought he wouldn't be able to see us run across his property around the luscious fruit trees. We were almost through the farm when we heard, "Hey, girl!" in a gruff, low voice. We stopped dead in our tracks! There we were, face to face with Old Man Donovan. Our knees were shaking. We had visions of rocks pounding our bodies and bullets piercing our hearts.

"Come here," he said, reaching up to one of his apple trees. Still shaking, we went over to him. He held out several ripe, juicy, red apples. "Take these home,” he commanded. We took the apples with surprised hearts and ran all the way home. Of course, Leigh Ann and I ate the apples.

As time went on, we often went through Old Man Donovan's farm, and he kept on giving us more luscious fruit. One day, we stopped by to see him when he was on his front porch. We talked to him for hours. While he was talking, we realized that we had found the other hidden treasure: the sweet, kind heart hidden behind his gruff voice. Soon, he was one of our favorite people to talk to. Unfortunately, his family never seemed to enjoy our company. They never smiled or welcomed us in.

    Paragraph 1:

Every summer, we would visit Mr. Donovan and talk to him.……

    Paragraph 2:

The next winter, word got around that Old Man Donovan had died. ……

Elizabeth walked to the yard, carrying a bunch of daisies (雏菊)

Beautiful flowers for. for... Oh. I'll never get it right!" she cried, throwing the daisies on the ground. She had been practising her speech for a week.

Part of her couldn't wait. This Saturday, the great Ana Wolff, famous pianist, would perform at the concert hall in town. For four years, Elizabeth had listened to Ms Wolffs recordings over and over again, loving the way the notes flowed like a rushing mountain stream.

Part of Elizabeth was terrified. Her music teacher at school, Mr. Leaf, had asked her to present the flowers to Ms Wolff after the performance. But Elizabeth knew herself well. She had severe stage fright and she really hated it when she had to talk in front of people. Even so, Elizabeth was determined to take the challenge this time.

"How's the speech going?" asked Elizabeth's mother. "Want to practice on me?"

"No, thanks." said Elizabeth. "Mum, I can't do this! I'll forget. I might even pass out!"

"Oh, honey. Think about it… sharing the stage with Ana Wolff. What an honour!" Mum gently comforted her.

Elizabeth kept practising. "Beautiful flowers for… for a beautiful performance…" She presented the flowers to the cat, the dog, even the statue in the garden.

Soon it was Saturday night, Elizabeth stood at the backstage, behind the heavy black curtains. Holding the bouquet (花束) of red roses, she felt her heart racing wildly and her stomach tightened with nervousness.

The lights dimmed, and Ms Wolff began her performance. She swayed and nodded with her fingers dancing across the keys. Soft sad parts, loud angry parts, parts that sounded fun to play, Drawn into the music, Elizabeth forgot for a moment about the six words she had to say. With a flourish, Ms Wolff played her final note. Applause thundered through the hall. People jumped to their feet and cheered.

Ms. Wolff smiled and bowed. Then she walked off stage and into the wings. Almost immediately, she returned to the stage for a second bow.

I could smell the turkey cooking, even in the attic where I was hiding out. I heard a laugh, too, and a bang from something being dropped. Our house was noisier since my new stepsister and step-mother moved in—Jen and Mom.

I called her Mom, but the word felt uncomfortable, like a pair of shoes that pinched(夹脚). I didn't remember my own mother; she had died in an accident when I was a baby. It had always been just Dad and me. We were a team. Now, so much had changed, and sometimes I wished I had the magic to change it back.

I heard Dad's footsteps upstairs. "Do you want to take Jen skating?" he asked.

"I guess." I sighed, thinking about how Dad and I usually spent Thanksgiving Day building a big snowman. But this year, Dad was too busy helping Mom cook the turkey.

"Thanks," Dad said and put his arm around my shoulders. "We'll make that snowman later," he promised.

"Yeah," I agreed, not too sure we'd have time.

Mom handed us some homemade cookies with smiling faces as we grabbed our skates. I had to admit, Mom came up with good ideas sometimes. Even though I liked that, I still couldn't help but feel as if she were changing everything.

"No, thanks. I'm not hungry," I said, although I was, a little.

"Ready?" I asked Jen. She nodded, and we headed out the front door.

The snow crunched under our boots as we walked down the street. The silence was awkward. "Did you go skating a lot last year?" I asked, blurting out the first thing that came to my mind.

Jen shook her head and looked at me. Finally she said, "On Thanksgiving, Mom and I always went to visit some friends on a farm. I especially loved seeing their big turkeys."

Until then, I'd never even thought about how Jen must be feeling. She not only had a new stepfather and stepbrother; she had a new town and home, too. Jen and her mom used to live near a lake, and she'd had to move up north with us. She'd had more changes than me.
