       Several weeks ago, I took part in a campus singing competition. I didn't 15 a prize. If I had not 16this article, I would definitely have felt17 again. But instead, I smiled after the competition. I was happy that at least I had got some stage18.

 Life is not just a bed of roses. There are thorns (刺) as well, but these thorns help us become19 and strong. When life 20 us alemon, let's try to make a lemonade.

      I grew up with a birth defect known as spina bifida, a disability that affects my sense of balance, causing me to walk with a limp.

     As a young child, I could remember the way other children would look at me and stare because of the way that I walked.There were many times that my schoolmates would laugh at me and call me names simply because of their lack of understanding of why I was a little different.

      Now that I am an adult, I have noticed that the stares and names have begun to fade, and judgments that once were negative have begun to turn toward acceptance.Now I look beyond what I can't do and focus on what I can.I have learned that limitations open doors that have been closed, showing other ways to meet our needs.I have always looked at life as a challenge, grasping each obstacle with open arms.There is nothing in this world that comes easy.I must stand tall and look forward, to be ever so ready for what still lies ahead.

      People often feel sorry for those who were born with some type of disability.But their compassion is misplaced.Yes, I may not be able to run as fast or perform certain tasks, but my disability gives me a better look at life and all that's around me.I want to be seen not as a person with a disability but as a person who has and will continue to bloom.

      So I decide to become an advocate on behalf of disabled Americans, to fight for our rights which have been ignored for so long.I feel that it only takes one powerful voice to change the minds of many nations, and as long as I have a mouth to use and a mind to think I will continue to work to bring peace upon the disabled community.

It is a plain fact that we are in a world where competition is going on in all areas and at all levels.This is exciting.Yet，on the other hand，competition breezes a pragmatic (讲究实际的) attitude.People choose to learn things that are useful，and do things that are profitable.Today's college education is also affected by this general sense of utilitarianism (功利主义)．

        Many college students choose Business，Law not Computer Programming as their majors convinced that these professions are where the big money is.It is not unusual to see the college students taking a part­time job as a warm­up for the real battle.I often see my friends taking GRE tests，working on English or computer certificates and taking the driving tests to get a license.Well，I have nothing against being practical.As the competition in the job market gets more and more severe，students do have reasons to be practical.

However，we should never forget that college education is much more than skill training.Just imagine，if your utilitarianism becomes the main trend on campus，leaving no space for the cultivation (培养) of students' minds，or development of their soul.We will see university is training out welltrained spiritless working machines.If utilitarianism controls society，we will see people lost in the moneymaking adventures；we will see humanity losing their grace and dignity，and that would be disastrous.I'd like to think society as encouraging and people regard profit or fame only as a horse that pulls the courage.Yet without the driver picking direction，the courage would go straight and may even end out in a dangerous situation.

A certificate may give you some advantages，but not broad horizons，positive attitudes and personal integrity (诚实正直)，which are the wealth you cannot acquire through any quick fixed way.Although in today's world，the highest level of competition may not be that of skills or expertise (专门技能)，but vision and strategy，your intellectual quality largely determines how far you can go in your career.

     “When I grow up, I want to be...”

        Almost all of us have thought about, or been asked to think about, our future careers. Our answers may differ greatly. Even now your aspirations may have changed from when you were in primary school.

        However, it seems career options aren't only based on personal taste. In a survey carried out by teens, doctors, lawyers, and bankers were some of most popular careers that people said they hoped to follow. This is in line with a similar survey carried out in the U．K. in May 2011 by job website monster.co.uk, in which medicine was the top choice among U．K. teenagers aged between 13 and 17.

        Medicine and law are two of the oldest and best known professions. Their prestige (威望) may come from the fact that doctors and lawyers are some of the most esteemed members of society, and they make good money. Joining these high­profile professions is often seen as a sign of upward social mobility.

        It is equally unsurprising that banking is now one of the most common career choices. Youngsters worldwide think of banking and see the money rolling in. Wealth is increasingly becoming one of the most important indicators of a successful career. British young men list the U．K. tycoon Alan Sugar, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg as their top role models “for their wealth”. Just as Chinese teenagers see being a banker as a good and fun pathway to “wealth”．

        However, not every child has the makings of doctor, lawyer, or banker. They are those who see fulfillment and happiness in other areas, and many teenagers dare to ink more individuality into their career options. As the Teens' survey discovered, a variety of unconventional jobs—coffee shop owner, gourmet (美食家), waiter at a fast food restaurant—are among teenagers' career choices. They can be equally interesting and rewarding jobs.

       With every choice comes responsibility and challenge, and all career paths require specific education and training, you have to learn to balance optimism and confidence with being realistic about your particular talents and skills. 

Tips to Become More Confident

     Our confidence plays an important role in theability to achieve success and happiness. It affects our thought patterns, theway we speak and act, and the decisions we make in all areas of our lives.Confident people take more action, perform better, and are more likely toachieve their goals. Lucky for us, confidence can be built andstrengthened until it becomes natural, just as any other habit. It simply takesa little time, some effort, and a bit of attention.

●Learn.

     The more knowledge you acquire, the moreconfident you will be. Knowledge is power, and the more powerful you feel, thehigher your confidence will be.

●

        Keep a list of successes, big and small. It'llhelp you to see your abilities in a more positive and realistic light.

●Starta conversation.

 When you find yourself in a social situation,don't always turn to those who you're comfortable with. Eventually getting to know new people willbecome easier.

●Don't compare.

      Stop measuring yourself against others.Making comparisons is a damaging andan inaccurate measure of success anyway.

 Confidence helps you to be more secure in yourabilities and more positive in your attitude. It also encourages you to be moreassertive (坚定自信的)to take up morechallenges, and to improve your skills. The end result is a betteroutlook, more success, and a higher quality of life in all areas.

      Last weekend as I was riding in the bike lane alongside the truck, we reached acrossing and it turned to the right, (hit) me and my bicycle. Even more upsetting was the fact the driver didn't stop afterward. ， I was not injured and my bicycle was damaged, but stillusable.

       Even days later I reported the event to the police, they failed to (proper) solve this situation or even return mycalls. Eventually, I decided (contact) University Student Legal Services for help about this matter. The small damage may not seem worth all trouble, but what if I had been seriously (injure)? Will anyone see punishment for breaking traffic laws and damaging my property?

         Unfortunately, my experience is common, and(accident)between bikes and cars occur far too often. A comprehensive study(report) that of the nearly 3 000 cyclist­ motorist crashes that occurred between2000 and 2010 about 20 percent were hit­and­runs.

         Bicycles are held to the same standards asmotor vehicles in most cases. means that cyclists must obey all trafficrules, and also have the right to get damages in the accidents. I urge both cyclists and motorists to become familiar with their rights and duties when sharing theroads.
