This is a song. Millions of Americans will hear this song on New Year's Eve. It is called Auld Lang Syne (《友谊天长地久》). It is the traditional music played during the New Year's celebration.

      Auld Lang Syne is an old Scottish poem. It tells about the need to remember old friends. The words “Auld Lang Syne” means “old long since”. No one knows who wrote the poem first. However, a version (版本) by Scottish poet Robert Burns came out in 1796. The words and music we know today first appeared (出现) in a songbook three years later.

The song is played in the United States mainly on New Year's Eve. The version you are hearing today is by the Washington Saxophone Quartet. As we end our programme with Auld Lang Syne, I would like to wish all of our radio friends a very Happy New Year! This is Buddy Thomas. Thanks for listening.

　　　　There was once a young mouse that lived in a hole of a wall. One day, the young mouse woke up (醒来) and looked out of the hole. As he looked out, a fantastic smell came to his nose. “Cheese!” the mouse said happily to himself. “I'll go and get it now and have it for breakfast.”

　　　But then he remembered his parents' words. His parents were clever mice and often said to their son. “Always wait before you go for a piece of cheese.”

　　　So the young mouse waited quietly. Then he heard a quiet “Miaow” and he knew the cat was there. He stayed in the hole and said to himself, “I'm glad I listened to my parents and learned to wait.”

　　　The next day, he looked out again. He put his nose out of the hole, and got the beautiful smell of cheese. It was only a few centimeters (厘米) away. But he sat still and waited quietly. This time he did not hear any cat noises. Instead he heard a very quiet “woof, woof.”

　　　“ It's a dog!” he thought. “If the dog is there, the cat won't be there. I expect (料想) the dog has chased (追赶) the cat away, so I'm safe.” The mouse ran out of the hole and saw the cat. The cat caught him and ate him.

　　　When the cat finished her meal, she said to herself, “I'm glad I listened to my parents and learned a second language.”

       It was her turn. When she went into Doctor Tim's room, he was smiling and said, “ (close) your eyes.” Rose's tears came down. But when she opened her eyes, she saw Doctor Tim holding her tooth.

       Then Doctor Tim gave her a teddy bear. And from that time Rose wasn't scared of doctors any more.
