I was small for my age. I was shy and sometimes it was hard for me to make friends with others. However, learning came fairly (相当地) easy for me. I was the best in most of my classes, but PE class was my nightmare (噩梦) and made me feel that I was not as good as the others. Miss Forsythe was our PE teacher. She was young and energetic. Everyone liked her. She said that we all had to come to her classes. No one could hide from Miss Forsythe!
One day she told me that she wanted me to play a game with another girl in a PE show. I was rather worried that I wouldn't do a good job as she explained her idea, but she was excited. With her encouragement, I had no choice but to agree.
It was a "boy meets girl" game. I played the boy and my classmate, Margaret Ann. played the girl. We were dressed in evening clothes and danced around the floor. According to Miss Forsythe. I had to pick up Margaret Ann when we finished the dance. Since I was not strong enough to pick the tallest girl up, it was she who picked me up. I suddenly felt ten feet tall! It was a huge success and everybody applauded (鼓掌) for our excellent performance. What a wonderful ending! Afterwards. I smiled confidently. Miss Forsythe's understanding and willingness to create a place for me in her show (which certainly did not need me) gave me some much needed confidence. She was and always will be my favorite teacher.

Ten inches of rain may be enough for many plants to survive (存活) if the rain is spread throughout the year, If it falls within one or two months and the rest of the year is dry, those plants may die and a desert may form.
Sand begins as tiny pieces of rock that get smaller and smaller as wind and weather wear them down. Sand dunes (沙丘) are formed as winds move the sand across the desert. Bit by bit, the dunes grow over the years, always moving with the winds and changing the shape. Most of them are only a few feet tall, but they can grow to be several hundred feet high.
There is, however, much more to a desert than sand. In the deserts of the southwestern United States, cliffs (悬崖) and deep valleys were formed from thick mud that once lay beneath (在……之下) a sea more than millions of years ago. Over the centuries, the water dried up. Wind, sand, rain, heat and cold all wore away at the remaining rocks. The faces of the desert mountains are always changing--very, very slowly--as these forces of nature continue to work on the rock.
Most deserts have a surprising variety of life. There are plants, animals and insects that have adapted (适应) to life in the desert. During the heat of the day a visitor may see very few signs of living things, but as the air begins to cool in the evening, the desert comes to life. As the sun begins to rise again in the sky, the desert once again becomes quiet and lonely.
(1)、Many plants may survive in deserts when_________.A、it is dry all the year round B、the rain falls only in a few weeks C、there is little rain in a year D、the rain is spread out in a year(2)、Sand dunes are formed when____________.A、sand piles up gradually B、there is plenty of rain in a year C、the sea has dried up over the years D、pieces of rock get smaller(3)、The underlined sentence in the third paragraph probably means that in a desert there is __________.A、too much sand B、more sand than before C、nothing except sand D、something else besides sand(4)、It can be learned from the text that in a desert __________.A、there is no rainfall throughout the year B、life exists (存在) in rough (恶劣的) conditions C、all sand dunes are a few feet high D、rocks are worn away only by wind and heat15. 阅读理解We often find that weekends and holidays feel so short while classes and work feel so long. Actually, though, we know that this is not true. But we still wonder where that strange feeling comes from.
In fact, this is one of the ways that we're tricked by time, according to the website. All that S interesting. The website lists several wrong impressions (印象) we often have about time. Let's have a look.
First of all, emotions affect (影响) our time-keeping abilities. Negative emotions (消极情绪). especially anxiety and boredom, make time seem longer because they make us concentrate (集中) more on the passage of time. However, when we are enjoying ourselves, we pay more attention to what we are doing and are likely to lose track of (失去对……的意识) time.
Here is another example. In 2007, a group of scientists carried out a test. In the test, people fell 50 meters into a safety net and were then asked about their experience. Although the experience took shorter than 3 seconds, the people thought it was much longer than it actually was.
This is because of the way our bodies reply to danger, according to the scientists. Our bodies produce a chemical called adrenaline (肾上腺素) when we are faced with danger. It allows us to concentrate better so that we can stay alive. As a result, we are able to remember far more details (细节) over a short period of time, which makes it seem like time is going more slowly.
Another situation when we make mistakes about time is when we take afternoon naps (午觉). Have you ever had trouble telling what time it is after a long nap? That's because the best amount of time for a nap is 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, you enter a new stage of sleep called slow-wave sleep. If you wake up mid-way in this stage, it will take a while before you can correctly perceive (感知) time again.
Yes, time can be mysterious (神秘的) and there is no way to control it. So, perhaps the best thing to do is to make good use of every minute.
(1)、According to the passage, what possibly makes people feel so long?A、Weekends and holidays. B、Weekends and work. C、Classes and work. D、Holidays and work.(2)、According to the passage, what will NOT happen when we are faced with danger?A、Our bodies will produce a chemical called adrenaline. B、We are able to feel that time seems to go more slowly. C、Adrenaline will make us concentrate better to stay alive. D、We will forget far more details over a short period of time(3)、Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A、Negative emotions, especially anxiety and boredom, make time seem longer because they make us concentrate more on the passage of time B、When we are enjoying ourselves, we pay more attention to what we are doing and we are able to feel like time is going more slowly. C、If we wake up mid-way after a long nap, it will take a while before we can correctly perceive time again. D、Time can be mysterious and there is no way to control it. So, perhaps the best thing to do is to make good use of every minute.四、任务型阅读。(共5小题,每小题2分,计10分)

You may think that inventions are far away from your everyday life. But in fact, almost everyone can invent things. It's just that they do not realize that their ideas could be the start of an invention. Once inventors see their ideas have some practical value, they don't let them slip way.
For example, the inventor of the dishwasher, American Josephine Cochrane, loved to give dinner parties. But she found it took long to wash her dishes by hand. She decided that a machine could do the job faster and with fewer mistakes. So, in 1886, she set out to make one for herself.
Here are the steps to create inventions. The first and most important step is to find the problem. You can start by looking at what is wrong with things you use now. You can ask grandparents or neighbors if they remember ever saying: "I wish someone would invent something for…" Or you can look at people in different areas--such as on the street, or at school. Then you might notice situations or things in need of improvement. Remember to record you ideas and work. This will help you develop your invention and protect it when it is completed. The next step is to think about possible solutions (解决方法). An invention is a new way of solving a problem. So think of many, varied and unusual ways. You can often come up with a solution to a problem by looking at it from a different side.
The hardest part of inventing, even for a lot of inventors, is coming up with a problem and finding a solution. Once you have an idea, you can always get help building your invention. This problem-solving technique can also work in your everyday life. So, why not try it in your studies, in your relationship with others, or even in the way you look at the world?
(1)、Josephine Cochrane found it took too long to wash her dishes.(2)、用英文表达文中画线单词one所指代的内容。(3)、找出并写下第三段的主题句。(4)、What is the hardest part of inventing?(5)、将文中画线句子译成汉语。五、词语运用。(共10小题,每小题1分,计10分)
