        Jan, 13

"I remember my first memory is my second birthday. There was a cake with two candles. I couldn't blow the candles out, so my dad did it for me. "

        Mike, 15

Most adults remember little about this that happened in their very early childhood, 2, some people think that we aren't really able to form memories before our fourth or fifth birthdays. But scientists carrying out research into early memories have suggested that this is not true. They say that we do form memories at a very young age. However, what we remember about our very early lives seems to change as we3.

Researchers in Canada worked with 140 children aged between four and thirteen. First, they asked their participants to describe their earliest memories. Then they asked them roughly how old they'd been when the event happened. Next, they asked the kids" parents to make sure that the event actually happened. And all the4were written down. The researchers waited for two years before they went back to the children and asked them again, "What's your earliest memory?"

Nearly all the children who were aged between four and seven in the first interview said something very different in the second interview. And when the researchers reminded them of what they'd said the first time, many of the children said, No, that never happened to me. " However, many of the children who were between ten and thirteen at the first interview described exactly the5memory in the second interview. This seems to suggest that our memories change in the early years, but that at around the age of ten, the things that we remember get fixed (固定的).

The researchers are now looking into the question of why children remember certain events and not others. We sometimes think that most first or early memories are about very stressful things that happened to us as children, because had thins stand out in our minds. But in this study, stressful events were only a small percentage of what the children said they remembered. More often, their early memories were happy ones. The researchers are trying to work out why this is the case. We expect the researchers will6 more fascinating things about memories in the near future.

七、Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words

  • 40. 在短文的空格内填入适当的词,使其内容通顺,每空格限填一词,首字母已给

I don't believe it! It's 11 p. m. and I'm still sitting here writing this article for the school magazine! I've had two weeks to write it and my teacher wants it tomorrow. She's always c that I leave things to the last minute. Maybe she's right. A month ago, I made up my mind to be more efficient this year and not to leave thing to the last minute. But I've failed. I've also been trying to get fitter for four weeks now. I've started going to the gym. I've taken up karate lessons and I've changed my diet. I've even been going to bed earlier. But I'm not feeling any fitter. I felt just a little u. I miss my bad habits. Why is leading a better life so hard?

I've just read an article on a website and I've found out that it isn't my fault! In fact, it isn't anyone's fault! It's our brains. They"re programmed, therefore, it is difficult to break bad habits. There's nothing we can do. Scientists have done experiments that show we use one part of our brain when we think about oand another when we think about other people. However, when we think about the "future us", we use the part of the brain that we usually use to think about other people. In other words, the brain sees the "future you" as a different person to your "present you ". And that's why we don't always find it easy to make sensible d in the future when we face difficulties.

But that's not all. Scientists have also found out that it takes around ten weeks to form a good habit. For example, if I want to keep fit, It's going to take me ten weeks to go to the gym and then it will become an automatic part of my life. That's because ten weeks is the amount of time the brain needs to change and anew ways of behavior as a part of everyday life. The good news is that once you make it to ten weeks, everything becomes much easier. The bad news is that ten weeks is a really long time, so It's easy to give up on (打消) your good plan s.

So there you are. Maybe we want to change our ways and become better people but our brains won't let us. Or is this just an e? Look! I've finished my article on time. Anything is possible!

  • 41. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题)

There was once a boy who was afraid of the dark. He thought that his bedroom was filled up with monsters when it was dark. But there came a time when he was too old to be allowed to keep sleeping with the light on.

That first night he was filled with fear, his mind full of monsters. Therefore, he went over to his wardrobe to get a torch. But when he opened the wardrobe door, he saw a monster, face to face, and he let out the loudest scream in the world.

The monster took a step backwards, grabbed his colourful hair, stared at the boy with his single red eye, and …started crying! The monster cried for so long that the boy's shock and fear disappeared. He calmed the monster as much as he could, and started talking to him, asking him why he was crying, and what he was doing there.

The monster told him he lived in the wardrobe, but almost never went out, because he was afraid of the boy. When the boy asked him why, the monster told him the boy's face seemed to him the most horrible thing he'd ever seen with eyes, ears and a nose. The boy felt the similar way about the monster with a huge head full of mouths and hair.

The two of them talked so much that they became quite friendly, and they came to know that both of them had been afraid of the thing :the unknown. To lose their fear, all they had to do was to get to know each other. Together they travelled around the world, seeing lions, tigers, crocodiles and dragons. It was the first time either of them had seen such creatures, but they made the effort to get to know them. In the end, they ______and________.

And, although his parents weren't too happy, because they thought he was too old to still believe in monsters, the truth of it was that all kinds of creatures visited the boy's bedroom each night. And, instead of fearing them, he had learned to get to know them and be friends with them.
