    The Silk Road is the name of different roads that long ago connected Europe, Africa and Asia. People reached these different places along these roads. Scientists believe people began to travel the Silk Road about 3000 years ago. By the time the Chinese silk trade became important in the world, the Silk Road covered almost 6500 kilometers. It spread from Rome to China, which is from the West to the Far East.

    Traders travelling along the Silk Road carried silk, of course. They also carried and traded spices（香料）,cloth, valuable stones and gold.

    There is a famous old story along the old road. It is said that Roman soldiers（士兵）travelled through central Asia. They started to live somewhere near the ancient Chinese village of Liqian. Some of these Romans married local Chinese women and the story of blue-eyed villages of China was started.

    During its busiest period, the Silk Road allowed people from many different cultures and countries to meet each other and mix. The Silk Road allowed the sharing of valuable goods and new ideas. These included people and trading goods from the Mediterranean, Persian, Magyar, Armenian, Bactrian, Indian and Chinese areas. All these peoples travelled the Silk Road, and they shared goods, stories, languages, and cultures.

    In modern times, the old Silk Road routes（路线）are still used, but now they are crossed by trains instead of camels and horses. There is even a Silk Route Museum in Jiuquan in China. It has over 35,000 objects from all along the Silk Road. In this way, China protects the history of many countries and peoples.

    Emily and Anne did know, of course. They had known about Charlotte's book for a long time. Jane Eyre was not the first book that Charlotte had sent to a publisher. Over a year ago she had written another book, The Professor, and sent it to one publisher after another. Each publisher had sent it back, in a packet addressed to Currer Bell. And then Charlotte had sent it, in the same old packet, to another publisher, and then another, and got it back again.

    "Why didn't you change the paper on the packet, my dear?" I asked.

    Charlotte smiled. "I didn't think of it, papa. The worst day was when we were Manchester, going to the eye doctor. Do you remember? The packet came back then. That was the day before I started writing Jane Eyre."

    "Do you mean that you started writing Jane Eyre while I was lying in the dark room in Manchester?"

    "That's right, papa."

    "But that's only six months ago, and here is the book in my hand!"

    "Yes, papa. The book was printed a month later after I sent it to the publisher."

    "My dear! They decided very quickly that they liked it, then!"

    "I think they did, papa. After all, it is a good book, isn't it?"

    She smiled at me. I don't think I have ever seen her so happy. She is a very small person. Charlotte, and not a beautiful woman, but when she smiles like that, her face shines like a fine painting. My wife used to look like that sometimes when I first met her.

    I took her hand in mine. "It is a very good book, my dear. I cannot tell you how proud I am."

    She touched my hand. "Thank you, papa. But you must not be proud of me alone. You know, another two of your daughters—Anne and Emily…"

    "Oh, no, Charlotte, please!" Emily said.

    But Charlotte did not stop. "Anne and Emily have written good books too, and their books will soon be published as well! Let me introduce them to you, papa. These young ladies—Anne and Emily, are "not" your daughters—they are separately Acton Bell and Ellis Bell, brothers of the famous writer Currer Bell!"

    Emily's face was bright red, but Anne and Charlotte started laughing. I was very surprised.

    "All three of you!" I said. "But—but why do you use these strange names?"

    "Because people are stupid, papa." Anne said. "No one thinks women can write good books, so we have used men's names. And now they say that Currer Bell is a writer who understands women very well!" She laughed again.

    "Oh boys, boys, don't throw stones at that poor bird, "said an old gray-headed man.

    "Why, sir, "said a little boy, "she makes such a scream, that we can't bear her." "Yes, but she uses the voice which God gave her. And it is probably as pleasant to her friends as yours is to those who love you. Besides, I am afraid the stone will rebound（弹回）, and hurt you as long as you live!"

    "Fifty years ago, I was a boy like you. I used to throw stones, and as I had no other boy very near me to play with, I threw them till I became very accurate（精确的）in my aim.

    "I said nothing to the old couple about it. But, through a grandchild, they found it out. Though they never said a word to me on the matter, they mourned the bird and buried（埋葬）it. I could never look them in the face afterwards. Oh, I had told them how sorry I was!

    "They have been dead many, many years. But don't you see how that stone rebounded and hit me? How deep it made upon my memory! How deep upon my conscience（良知）！Why, my dear boys, how I want to give a great deal today if I could do something for that deed!

    "For fifty years I have carried it in my memory. I have never spoken of it before. Yet if what I have now said shall prevent you from throwing a stone that may rebound and deeply hurt your conscience. I shall be very cheerful. "

The boys at once dropped the stones they had in their hands.

    Long ago, only the cat had the ability to trace its prey by scent（根据气味追踪猎物）. The other animals used their eyes to  （发现）their prey. The dog wanted to learn the skill, so he went to visit the cat. The cat said yes to the dog's  （要求）and asked him to stay in his house during the lessons. After a few （天）the dog thought that he could use the skill and wanted to go home.

    The dog followed to the two rocks but he could not find any footprints there. He became （失望）He kept going round and round the tree. but he couldn't trace the cat.

    That's why the dog only knows how to trace its prey on the ground.

Greetings from Madrid !

    I can't believe I'm finally here! The trip from Hong Kong  (be) long and tiring,   but I made it. My hotel is nice and I am staying in a guesthouse in the central area of Madrid. I got a cheap and simple room, much  (small) than my own room back home. It only has a small bed and shower,   it is quite comfortable to stay in.

    The weather here is wonderful. It's warm and sunny,  clear blue skies every day. It's great for sightseeing, because there are a lot of things to see and do. I've found a friendly guide here and yesterday I  (show) around the city. Tomorrow he will take  (I) to Andalusia to visit the city of Granada. I can't wait  (see) the Alhambra Palace and other places of interest. Also, I  (real) want to try the food there - especially gazpacho,  kind of cold soup which I hear is special, very different from anything else in Spain.

    The Backstreet Boys is a well-known rock band in the USA．When their first album（音乐专辑） came out, they got a lot of attention. Young people everywhere loved their songs. Among the band's biggest fans, there was a young boy named Aaron Carter. Aaron had a special reason for taking such an interest in the band. Nick Carter, one of the Backstreet Boys, was Aaron's big brother.

    Even before Nick joined the band, Aaron loved music. From the age of two, Aaron spent lots of time listening to the radio. He sang along with his favorite songs. He made up dances to go with them. That's why Aaron's family was not surprised when Aaron decided to follow Nick into the music world.

    Aaron got off to a fast start. At the age of seven, he joined a band in his hometown of Tampa, Florida. But after two years, Aaron didn't want to be part of a band anymore. He wanted to sing alone. Soon, brother Nick gave Aaron a helping hand. During a Backstreet Boys show in Germany, Aaron sang a song. He did an amazing job! After the show, someone from a record company asked Aaron to make an album. Of course, Aaron said yes!
