Outside the protected areas in India, the number of large carnivores(食肉动物) is increasing, due to the stricter protection of wildlife. It is good news indeed, but at the same time it causes serious problems for management. From time to time, the interactions between people and carnivores result in conflicts. And this issue is particularly serious with leopards.

A group of researchers have studied the interactions between people and leopards in Kamataka, a state in India with more than 90 million people. Leopards can be found in nearly half of the state, so there is a good chance that people and leopards run into each other from time to time.

To gauge the frequency of such interactions, the researchers looked through the media reports from 2013 to 2014 carefully. They found 245 separate incidents in total. Among them, most cases were attacks on livestock or spotting of the leopards by people.

But there are a small number of those incidents that involve injuries or even death of people. According to the researchers, there were 32 attacks on people, causing three deaths. There were also34 leopards died during the study period. Most of their death resulted from hunting and being hit by vehicles. Disappointing it may sound, they found capturing and relocating the animals didn't seem to work out well in reducing their contacts with humans.

So here comes the question: how can the large carnivores and people better coexist?

The researchers believe that it is important to collect more data on where leopards are most likely to be found in populated areas. In this way, people can avoid those big cats effectively. Meanwhile farmers should be paid quickly and fairly for their loss of livestock. People can thus lower the chances of hunting down and killing or moving the offending animal.

(1)、Which of the following statements best describes the author's attitude towards the increasing number of large carnivores?
A、Stricter protection of wildlife is the only reason for it B、Besides the conservation of the animals, there are no other benefits C、It might present a threat to the harmony between humans and carnivores D、There is nothing bad about the phenomenon
(2)、The underlined word "gauge" in paragraph 3 probably means______.
    A、to search B、to gather C、to plan D、to determine
(3)、According to the researchers, which of the following is an effective way to help humans and carnivores coexist?
A、To figure out the possible locations of the carnivores and avoid running into them. B、To hunt down the offensive carnivores in populated areas. C、To capture and relocate the animals. D、To gain data on the frequency of interactions between people and carnivores.

San Francisco has its cable cars. Seattle has its Space Needle. And, Longview has its Nutty Narrows Bridge. The bridge has attracted visitors from many different parts of the world, and is now regarded as a symbolic landmark of Longview.

The bridge was built in 1963 by a local builder named Amos Peters, and it was originally built to help the local squirrels move between the Park Plaza office building and a city park across the street without being hit by the rushing cars.

Before the bridge was built, local squirrels had to cross the busy road between the two places for the nutty feast thrown for them by the staff in the building. Working around the neighborhood, Peters often witnessed squirrels being hit or run over.

One day, he found a dead squirrel with a nut still in its mouth, and the topic of that day s coffee break discussion was changed to squirrel safety. Peters and his colleagues came up with the squirrel bridge idea and formed a committee to ask the permission of the city council (市议会). The council approved, and the bridge was named "Nutty Narrows".

It didn't take long before reports of squirrels using the bridge started. Squirrels were even seen guiding their young and teaching them the ropes. The story was picked up by the media, and Nutty Narrows became known on newspapers.

In 1983, after 20 years of use, Peters took down the worn-out bridge. Repairs were made and crosspieces were replaced. The faded sign was repainted and in July 1983, hundreds of animal lovers attended the completion ceremony of the new bridge.

Peters passed away in 1984, and a ten-foot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge in memory of its builder and his devotion to the project.

There is no doubt that the actions such as using too much water or throwing rubbish into the rivers can put our water supply in danger. However, we could also affect the water supply in less obvious ways, for example, paving(铺砌))a road. Some may feel confused and wonder how such actions could result in less usable fresh water. To understand it, we have to know that a main component of our daily-used water is groundwater. Despite its name, it does not come from lakes or rivers on the ground。Instead, it comes from underground. The more roads and parking lots we build, the less water there is that flows into the ground to become groundwater.

However, human activity is not responsible for all water shortages. Places with drier climates are of course more likely to have droughts than areas with more rainfall. Regardless of the cases, good management can help ensure enough water to meet our basic needs.

Meanwhile, paying more attention to the way we use water can make a difference, too. According to recent research, each American uses more than 80 gallons of water a day at home on average! This shows how much we depend on water to live, but there is a lot we can do to lower the amount.

We can take steps to save water at home. To start with, use the same glass to drink water all day and wash it only once a day. Also, run the dishwasher only when it is full and use it in water-saving mode. Meanwhile, fix any leak in the house to avoid wasting water. We can also help to keep our water supply clean by recycling batteries and other rubbish instead of throwing them away.

(1)、Why does the author say people affect the water supply by paving the road?(no more than20 words)
(2)、What could also be responsible for water shortages apart from human activity?(no more than 2 words)
(3)、What does the underlined expression "Regardless of the cases" in paragraph 2 probably mean?(no more than 5 words)
(4)、According to recent research, how much water does each American use one day at home?(no more than 10 words)
(5)、What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us?(no more than 15 words)
