Finally, he traded his favorite model car and two army men his most important things for that pen, just to make13feel better.

    I still have that pen,14it's long out of ink (墨水), in a cup on my desk. When a refusal letter arrives and I start feeling15, I look at it and remember just how lucky I am. So I value (重视) that pen. It's Cody who I treasure most in my life.

    Autistic (患自闭症的) children may learn better from robots than from human beings, according to a study at a school in Birmingham.

    Two robots like humans, Max and Ben, have been helping teach autistic children at Sutcliffe Pimary School since March last year. The school is the first in the UK to try the new way.

    Lan Lowe, the head teacher, said, "The robots have no feelings so autistic children find that they are less terrible than their teachers."

    He added, "They are really cute-looking. Autistic children feel it difficult to communicate with adults and other children, but for some reasons they like these robots. "

    "Some children are not able to communicate with others. But they come to school and start to communicate through the robots."

    The robots are knee-high and move like children. The school is using them to teach phonics (声学) and play cards or memory and imitation (模仿) games with children from five to ten.

    Dr Guldberg said, "We do many different activities with the robots acting as a model for the children's behavior. It is amazing to see how interested and concentrated the children can be when they are working with the robots. It can be very difficult to get autistic children to concentrate."

    He added, "If you can meet the needs of autistic children, you can meet the needs of all children. And you know, when people feel safe and interested, they learn much better."

     Twelve-year-old Leonrdo was born in a poor family in Bambamarca in Peru. He knew how to read but he had never seen a book in his life. So he asked the new priest (牧师) in his village to give him one. But there was no electricity. So Leonardo borrowed candles from the church and sat up all night reading it. Then next morning, he was at the door of the priest asking for another book to read.

    John Medcalf, the priest, was moved. He also realized that people would love to read if given a chance. But he knew how difficult it was for Leonardo and those in his village to get books. And yet, no one can be taught to read and write without books. To make people in a poor, faraway area grow to love books, they have to be with them. So he thought the only way was to bring books to people.

    But how could this be done? Mobile libraries or car libraries would be too expensive and difficult to continue in the rocky, hilly land of Peru. So what other methods could be used?

    Medcalf got a new idea from the barefoot (赤脚) doctors of China. And that was how the barefoot librarians first appeared in the villages of northern Peru, almost thirty years ago. The librarians began by going from village to village, lending books to villagers. They helped start The Rural Library Network of Peru. At first, they were teachers of the village schools which these far way libraries belonged to. But the teachers were not very interested in the job because it meant a lot of hard work. So village elders took on the job.

Today, there are 600 village libraries across Peru. The barefoot librarians who walk up to 15 hours a day with bags of books are their lifeline.

    My grandfather did not live with us because he was a very busy man, helping the poor in a small town. But as the holidays drew near, he would take the train to visit his grandchildren for a few days during the winter vacation. My favorite part of the holiday was the trip my grandfather and I would make together every year on December 24. I love him for that.

    Grandfather was the first one to own a radio in his town, a large box made of wood. He kept it in the Outer House, where he saw his patients and chatted with his friends. My grandfather's radio became the only way to learn the news of the Second World War.

    He was also the first one to send a daughter (my mother) to college, an act that made the whole village surprised. For this reason, he was the person I could ask about anything. He knew everything- from the capital of France to how fish were able to breathe under the water.

    This December 24, my grandfather and I walked together to Firpo's. We discussed what to buy at Firpo's as we walked. We ended up buying the fruitcake, the same as last year. Grandfather got me a cookie to eat on our way back. I asked Grandfather a question that I'd been thinking over for some time now. Why was Christmas called the Big Day?

    Grandfather was silent for a whole minute and when he finally spoke, his voice was slow, "Christmas-the birthday of a very special soul, was a day to grow big, "he said.

    "And how do you grow big in your heart, Grandfather?" I asked him.

    He answered slowly and softly, as though I were the same age as he, "By doing something you think will make them happy. Something you don't have to do, by putting their needs before your sat least once a day. It's a good start for trying to live a big life."
